Inhale-Exhale, Repeat
Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, repeat, repeat, repeat. Easy, normal, and natural, or it should be. What's the big deal? Doesn't breathing just happen naturally? Why do we have to think about it and watch it move and all that stuff? What's yoga got to do with it.
Breathing is a part of our autonomic nervous system which includes all those function that happen automatically, like our heart rate and blood pressure. However, it's one of the only automatic functions of the body that we actually can consciously alter. Being both voluntary and involuntary, breathing is controlled by two different sets of nerves in the muscles, one that run the system on it's own and one that we can control. So, we can control the voluntary system which in turn affects the the involuntary nervous system. That means we have direct control over our nervous system without all the drugs, whether it be caffeine or cocaine or Adderal or Valium.
Simply, respiration is just about the exchange of two gases, CO2 and oxygen. Life itself is a result of a beautiful balance between these two gases. It's this balance that causes the body to take on oxygen with an inhalation and let out old CO2 via an exhalation. This gas exchange happens naturally, however, this delicate balance can be thrown off voluntarily. Smoking, changing altitude, hyperventilating, holding and purposefully manipulating the breath are examples of intentional interference with the natural process. For example, divers and climbers both train their systems to handle an abnormal level of carbon dioxide by training the system to accommodate the imbalance.
Besides the exchange of C02 and oxygen there is the physical aspect of breathing--the expansion and contraction of the chest. When you inhale, the lungs fill, the ribs expand and the diaphragm drops. Reverse that and you have an exhale. Again, this all happens without much thought unless we screw it up somehow. And, we do. Plenty.
1. We wear jean that are too tight. This keeps the diaphragm from expanding and the rest of the breathing muscles have to work overtime to compensate.
2. We slump. When the shoulders fall forward and the chest collapses, the container for the lungs (your ribs) don't have the chance to expand. This results in reduced breath capacity.
3. We hold in our bellies. This is not just a physical problem, but energetically as well (for another topic). Our culture is obsessed with a flat stomach and 6-pack abs (see next). Just like the tight-jeans-syndrome, we consciously (or unconsciously) hold in our stomachs. This reduces the entire expansion of the diaphragm, resulting in a shallow breath.
4. Too much ab work. If we're not wearing tight jeans, we're wearing tight abdominal muscles.
5. Habitual stress, anxiety and fear. One the the body's automatic response to stress is a shorter, shallower breath, even holding the breath.
Therefore, we can voluntarily alter the exchange of gases and we can change the container the breath fills. Ah, now breathing is not so simple or routine or automatic.
Just as you are right now, notice your breath. No judging, or right or wrong, just notice. Is your belly moving? Your upper chest? How about your back? Congratulations, you've just taken your first step at being aware of your breath and with that awareness, you can improve your health. Really. We'll cover more next week.

Spiraling the Arms Overhead
How did you get your arms over head. Leslie Kaminoff suggests spiraling the arms as you raise them. Helps with the shoulders riding up. Here's another video of his that addresses the same issue.

 Are You a Balanced Person?
I've come upon J. Brown writing and thought you might enjoy his blog (and articles). Here are a few except from his this blog post: But really, there is no worse possible way to gauge whether or not we have a sense of balance in our lives than to equate it with the execution of poses. Sure, there is plenty of lip service given to the notion that we will take that challenging arm balance "off the mat" but it's not usually clear how that might happen. Especially when, most often, people are spending a whole lot more time struggling to master difficult balance poses than being empowered in the doing of them. The emphasis on difficult balance poses is not only proving ineffective at reducing stress but is also causing a considerable amount of harm. You can find his website and this blog post here.

Better Choices, Better Aging
I found this interesting article on YogaU, which is a great education site for everything yoga and beyond. I subscribe to their newsletter, so it comes into inbox just when I need it. Dr. Suhas Kshirsagar, BAMS, MD, an Ayurvedic practitioner, among other titles, tells us his opinion on Healthy Aging. He doesn't have many good things to say about the American lifestyle. Here's a bit:
"The real factor that determines longevity is whether you're expressing your good or bad genetic predispositions during your lifetime. We can turn on our good genes to behave in certain ways, and can we turn off certain genes which are acting, unfortunately, to create diseases, sickness, and suffering. "
It's here.

Have Fun, Lose Weight
This week's New York Times's Tuesday edition, Science Times section, reported on 3 studies about weight loss being tied to the fun-factor of the workout. It's the attitude about the exercise, not necessarily the calorie expenditure. Here's a bit.
"For some time, scientists have been puzzled - and exercisers frustrated - by the general ineffectiveness of exercise as a weight-loss strategy. According to multiple studies and anecdotes, most people who start exercising do not lose as much weight as would be expected, given their increased energy expenditure. Some people add pounds despite burning hundreds of calories during workouts."
More about he research is in the article.

Stengthen Your Bones
Sorry to break the news, but we are losing strength as we age. According to Yoga Therapist, Baxter Bell:
". . . as muscles age, especially after about the age of 50, we start to lose muscle mass in a process called sarcopenia . . .it is considered a normal part of the aging process, one that can lead to visibly smaller skeletal muscles-the ones that move our body and limbs around-which are then also going to be weaker." You guessed it, yoga is the antidote. Dr. Bell offers a short strengthening series, right here. |

The Intention Behind Honesty
Just as being truly compassionate doesn't mean always being sweet and nice (sometimes it means being cold, harsh), being truly honest doesn't mean speaking your thoughts and feelings as they arise. Other awarenesses and intention must be at work-and a recognition that the truth is not solid.

Be Happy on Fridays!
Instead of shots of tequila and fried artichoke hearts, spend your Friday happy hour moving and grooving at an most-levels vinyasa flow class.
On Friday's from 4:30 - 6:00, we'll end each week with an energetic vinyasa flow class. Through building heat from the inside, we'll strip out the stress hormones from the day. A long rest at the end of class will reset our nervous system and prepare us for our weekend.
You'll be done at 6:00!! That'll leave plenty of time for dinner with friends, a movie or a relaxing evening with your pooch. Or, maybe a Chia filled Kombucha or that 100% agave margarita!
