Activity Trackers
(pt 2)

Two weeks ago we discussed ActivityTrackers, primarily those worn on the wrist.  They're FitBit, or Vivofit or FitBit or Jawbone. Monitoring movement, like walking and flopping in your sleep, these magically synch with your computer to provide daily with stats, just like the pros.

We all know we need to move more.  But can tracking can help?  A report from the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 60 percent of American adults track their diet, exercise and overall fitness.  Impressive.  However, half of these people tracked the data "in their minds", rather than a data point on a screen.  For many of us, we track not by a device but by the fit of our skinny jeans.  If they're fitting a slightly too tight, it indicates a bit too many scoops of Three Twins Salted Caramel ice cream.  But what about activity?  It's not clear that the trackers are helping us exercise more. The New York Times reported that no long-term peer reviewed study has shown that people using the trackers become and remain more active.

Are the trackers accurate?  They do a really good job at tracking forward movement, like walking or jogging and according to some high-falutin testing, they accurately determine energy consumption.  But, that's about it.  The trackers were developed to monitor easy to measure activities, like brisk walking or jogging.  They do not measure the rest of our activities, like hot, sweaty yoga or rough-housing with your pooch, or planting your heirloom tomatoes with seeds from the Petaluma Seed Bank.

It doesn't feel like much of a concern, but the Food and Drug Administration does not regulate the devices nor does anyone review their accuracy.  Personally, I'd like to think the FDA worries about more pressing matters like the deceptive labeling on energy drinks, BPA in our bottles, and azodicarbonamide in our cereal and bread(1).

Should we care about accuracy or data recording?  In my opinion, probably not.  If you peel yourself from the 3rd season of Breaking Bad in order to get another 500 steps in, then  highfive!  If you park in the far corner of the fifth floor of Ikea and walk, congrats!  If watching your daily progress on your precious iPhone motivates you, whoop whoop!  Generally, the folk I talked to loved their devices.  For those that it motivates, I say they're worth it.

1.  There is no shortage of amazing, locally- made bread.  Hell, you can make very "local, artisinal" bred by throwing together some good flour, water and some yeast and sticking it in your hot oven.  Anyway, azodicarbonamide (ADA) is a chemical substance approved for use as a whitening agent in cereal flour and as a dough conditioner in bread baking.  From the FDA website:  http://www.fda.gov/downloads/Food/I
ngredientsPackagingLabeling/FoodAdditivesIngredients/UCM387975.pdf.  It's been found to be carcinogenic in female rats.

Spring Allergies

Ah, Spring.  For many it's the time for sniffling, puffy eyes and brain fuzz.  It's nothing new to learn from ScienceDaily that stress can make things worse for some folks.  Here's an excerpt:

Stress doesn't cause allergies, but easing your mind might mean less allergy flare-ups this spring. According to a study, allergy sufferers with persistent stress experience more allergy flares. "Stress can cause several negative effects on the body, including causing more symptoms for allergy sufferers," said an allergist.

Your First Yoga Class

I love beginners.  Why? Because they're enthusiastic, eager and don't what what they can't do.  They'll try anything.  It's the intermediate students that have an entire set of poses they've decided they "can't do" or hate.  I have mine.  The challenge is to get friendly with the difficult.  Instead of "I hate that pose" consider the language and switch to "I find that pose challenging".  I know it's just semantics, but it causes a mental shift and a softening toward the pose.

From YogaAnonymous.com here are "10 Things that will Absolutely Happen in your First Yoga Class".  They're funny, but mostly true.  Enjoy it here.
Esther Gokhale, L.Ac.: Walk This Way

How do you Stand (and sit and walk)?
You'd think that basic movement like walking would be natural, comfortable, and stable.  This is compared to some of our pretzel yoga poses.  But you know.  Just look around at how people move and sit. It's shocking.  Much or most of chronic back pain is due to our misalignment of our head, hips and pelvis over our feet.

Esther Gohake has made it her mission to education to realign our posture, or "restoring our primal posture".  She's got a website here and a TedTalk here.  Or, click above.  It's long, but informative.  (Thanks to Barbara for the link.)

Two Different Ways of Experiencing
Nirvana is not another realm or dimension but rather the clarity and peace that arise when our mental turmoil ends, because the objects with which we have been identifying are realized to be shunya [empty]. Things have no reality of their own that we can cling to, since they arise and pass away according to conditions. Nor can we cling to this truth. [Read the article here.]

happy hour
Be Happy on Fridays!
Instead of shots of tequila and fried artichoke hearts, spend your Friday happy hour moving and grooving at an
most-levels vinyasa flow class.

On Friday's from 4:30 - 6:00, we'll end each week with an energetic vinyasa flow class.  Through building heat from the inside, we'll strip out the stress hormones from the day.  A long rest at the end of class will reset our nervous system and prepare us for our weekend.

You'll be done at 6:00!!  That'll leave plenty of time for dinner with friends, a movie or a relaxing evening with your pooch.  Or, maybe a Chia filled Kombucha or that 100% agave margarita!
