Over Stimulated

By:  Jayne Robertson**

Stop for a moment as you read this. How many things are going on in your environment, RIGHT NOW? Is the TV on? Music? A conversation in progress? Are you petting your dog? Baking some gluten free cookies? Or naughty you...are you at a red light? How much is going on in your world at this very moment?

We have become numb to the amount of stimuli present in our everyday lives. If you watch one of the sports or news stations, not only do you have the game or the reporter on screen, but you have one and often two by-lines of subtext scrolling somewhere on the screen as well. In the gym the other day, I noticed a person who was walking on the treadmill, headphones on, TV on and reading the newspaper. I thought, "Wow...can this person add anything else into the mix to completely distract themselves from the actual physical activity?".

It's so common, we don't perceive it as being an issue. We're plugged into our devices, that are smaller and more accessible than ever. We have added another layer onto all else that we do. My question is, why?

Partially, I think it's because this is what most people are doing. It seems normal to be disconnected, so we don't have the awareness that we're participating. Our culture has led us to believe that silence isn't desirable. When we step into an experience where there is little distraction from simply being present, we often find it startling.

When we visited the Baha'i House of Worship, also known as "Lotus Temple" in Delhi, India, people were instructed to remain silent once inside the temple. As we entered and found a seat in one of the many long wooden pews there was a rustle of human activity and once people settled down, we were bathed under a vast dome of relative silence. Even after being thoroughly instructed to remain silent, many people couldn't resist the temptation to whisper something to another person. They would then be signaled to "hush" by a volunteer who would make eye contact and place prayer-like hands at their own mouths as a reminder. We sat for quite some time and we could feel a definite shift away from being over-stimulated by the densely populated city and into a sanctuary of calm.

My thought of the week is to see, even in our own busy lives, if we can peel away some of the extra layers and seek our own sanctuary. If you watch a talented juggler handling multiple balls at one time, they are still only doing one thing. Juggling. If you feel you're juggling too many things at a time, see if there is one thing to let go of in order to point your compass into a direction that is more calm. Letting go of a multi-tasking and distracting mind-set can lead us to a sense of openness and freedom, just as we found within the silent temple.

**This week's article is by my dear, loyal and incredibly talented friend, Jayne Robertson. Jayne also writes a weekly column/blog and she was the inspiration for my weekly newsletter.  Besides being a yoga instructor, therapist and trainer, she's an advocate for exploited young women. She single-handedly raised $20,000 for the SEVA Yoga Challenge in 2012 to raise awareness around sex trafficking in India and worldwide.  Besides all her accomplishments, she'd just a damn good human being.  Thanks, Jayne, for sharing your posting with us!

Scrubbing the Gut?
Ayurveda specialist, John Doulliard, says we don't get enough fiber.  We get lots less than our ancestral hunter/gatherers who got 100g of fiber a day.  We get about 10-20g.  Fiber does lots of good things like eliminating excess mucus and toxins from the gut and provides good bugs for the intestines.  Read more and surf around here.
Effects of Sitting

I love the graphics and information about the hazards of sitting too much.  The Health and Science section of the Washington Post tells us: "W
hat exactly goes wrong in our bodies when we park ourselves for nearly eight hours per day, the average for a U.S. adult? Many things, say four experts, who detailed a chain of problems from head to toe.

Foot Arch or Heel Pain
Living is a problem.  With a life comes a "lifestyle" or those things we "do", like eating, walking and talking.  Just like slumping over our computers (above), we squish our feet into shoes. Here comes problems.  Many folks have had plantar fasciitis (yes, with two i's).  There are some recommended stretches to help or prevent PF.

The above video suggests there is a type of plantar fasciitis that this podiatrist refers to plantar fasciosis.  This diagnosis does not involve inflammation, but tissue death from poor circulation.  Find more about our toes and how to restore natural foot function.  Lots of good stufff at his website.

5 Happiness Mistakes Parents Make and How to Avoid Them
No doubt, I'm a fan of Dr. Christine Carter, creator of Raising Happiness, Science-Based Tips for Producivity, Success and Happiness.  I started following her via The Greater Good.  Anyway, she's got a FREE video guide and downloadable audio on Happiness Tips for Parents, like how your sex life can affect your kids' happiness.  Really?

The above video is a sample. While you're at Raising Happiness and Greater Good, click around.  There's aways something inspiring and enticing.  Like today's inspiration:  The Power of Empathy.

Right Understanding
According to Buddha's teachings on the Four Noble Truths, all life is dukkha, suffering or unsatisfactoriness; suffering is caused by desire; desire can be dissolved; and the means to achieve this is the Noble Eightfold Path. Furthermore it's essential to note that the first step on the Path is right understanding. In order to attain liberation from suffering, we need to understand the nature of that suffering. We need to have knowledge of the world-including ourselves-as it really is.

happy hour
Be Happy on Fridays!
Instead of shots of tequila and fried artichoke hearts, spend your Friday happy hour moving and grooving at an
most-levels vinyasa flow class.

On Friday's from 4:30 - 6:00, we'll end each week with an energetic vinyasa flow class.  Through building heat from the inside, we'll strip out the stress hormones from the day.  A long rest at the end of class will reset our nervous system and prepare us for our weekend.

You'll be done at 6:00!!  That'll leave plenty of time for dinner with friends, a movie or a relaxing evening with your pooch.  Or, maybe a Chia filled Kombucha or that 100% agave margarita!
