Resolution with a Bite

I know, I'm 3 weeks late.  All of the New Year's Resolution tips have been exhausted, overdone, rehashed, year-after-year-after-year.  Most of us have failed our resolutions so many times, it surprises me that we even think about making new ones.  I don't.

Then comes along some new research.  Now, don't get me wrong, I respect science-based information but, really, not all studies are the same or even report information that I think is worthwhile or even accurate.  But, I was intrigued by the study that reported that putting a value on your resolutions was helpful.  Ah, money.  Over a 16 week study, those that set aside money for forfeiture if they failed to lose weight lost 14 lbs.

more than the control group.  That's pretty good.  And, get this.  Smokers had a higher success of quitting if they deposited funds into an account for 6 months and then lost the money if they failed a urine test for nicotine. Brilliant!

You could ask your friends to help you.  Give them $50 bucks and tell them keep it if they ever see you light up (or vap or whatever).  That may not be enough of an incentive for some.  What if you gave your friend $1,000 and if the scale doesn't show you lost 10 at the end of  3 months, they gave your money to the NRA.  Ah, now it gets more interesting.

Here comes StickK.com.  Birthed by some smart folks, like Yale profs Dean Karlan and Ian Ayres and staffed by a bunch of recently matriculated Yalies, StickK acts as a go-between, allowing you to deposit money not with a friend, but with them. You sign a contract with StickK to modify a behavior.  You select your goal, the amount of money you're putting up and where it goes if you don't fulfill the contract.

This is how I understand it works.  You choose a goal:  Let's say losing 10 lbs by April 1.  StickK calculates you need to lose a pound a week and you chose to wager $10 a week.  If you don't report back in and make the goal, StickK takes $10 (via credit card). To help you keep honest, you can chose a referee for a weigh-in to verify the loss.

At the end of your contract, if you missed your goal, your money goes where ever you've decided. Maybe it goes to your niece's college fund or better yet, to an "anti-charity" whatever that is for you.  Maybe it's the NRA, Dow Chemical, the Tea Party or your family nutcase.

Generally, I don't support money being used as a reward, especially with children. It leads to the perception that a monetary reward is attached to everything.  Well, in a capitalistic society, you could make that case. Similar to the StickK model, money could be given directly to the resolutions maker by a third person, if a goal was met.  There is no financial loss to the resolution maker, but there is a financial gain.  For example, you have a young daughter with a drug/alcohol problem.  She needs rehab but refuses go and you can't force her. Does she really need to hit rock bottom?  Would she go if you rewarded her with $10,000 when she exited a 3-month drug and alcohol program. That could be just enough push to get her to submit.  I think yes, it would.  What do you think?

This is interesting stuff.  You could try StickK or refer it to a friend. It might be a bit gimmicky, but it just might work.

Work Out in a Thermal Heat Capsule

Already in Holland, Germany, Switzerland and Argentina, the heated capsule workout is heading our way, no doubt.

"A new 'fitness spa' offers clients $125 classes in which they work out in glass pods that are heated at up to 98 degrees Fahrenheit. High-paced movement in the heated capsules, paired with a good amount of rest, gives participants a detoxifying sweat" says   MailOnline.

Your Brain on Yoga

Thanks to sophisticated brain imaging, neuroscience is showing what the ancients have always known and what current day yogis and meditators have been reporting:  increased mental stability and clarity.

Read all about it in this International Yoga article.  Here's an excerpt:

"A 2010 study found that subjects who meditated 30 minutes a day for eight weeks had a reduction of gray matter in the amygdala-which is linked to fear and anxiety."  Can I lose a few gray hairs too?

Changing Views
For, as the Buddhist view has consistently demonstrated, it is the perspective of the sufferer that determines whether a given experience perpetuates suffering or is a vehicle for awakening. To work something through means to change one's view; if we try instead to change the emotion, we may achieve some short-term success, but we remain bound by forces of attachment and an aversion to the very feelings from which we are struggling to be free.

Don't be Miserable on Fridays!
Instead of shots of tequila and fried artichoke hearts, spend your Friday happy hour moving and grooving at an
most-levels vinyasa flow class.

On Friday's from 4:30 - 6:00, we'll end each week with an energetic vinyasa flow class.  Through building heat from the inside, we'll strip out the stress hormones from the day.  A long rest at the end of class will reset our nervous system and prepare us for our weekend.

You'll be done at 6:00!!  That'll leave plenty of time for dinner with friends, a movie or a relaxing evening with your pooch.  Or, maybe a Chia filled Kombucha or that 100% agave margarita!
