The Yoga Clothing Issue - Men's (Pt 4)

I know you've been waiting, or not, for the final installment of the yoga clothing issue..  Here's the Men's Yoga Clothing review.  I initially anticipated dedicating about 2 sentences about togs for the opposite sex because one, men really don't care about what they wear and two, there isn't any clothing to review.  I was wrong.  I found that men do have opinions about what they wear and that there really isn't many good choices for men.

The New York times commented on the slim pickin's for men:

"While the market in yogacentric clothing for women is bursting at its fashionable seams, the choices for men are laughably sparse. They range from absurdly large, overly modest basketball shorts that bag downward in inversion poses to alarmingly tiny shorts that provide freedom of movement but give your classmates a far-too-clear view of your, uh, chakras."

On perusing websites, I found the Prana site had some promising picks for men.  Interestingly, Lululemon's website had a link for "yoga" under Women's, but only "running" under Men's.  What's up with that, Lulu?  Nothing for men at Athleta,  The website yoga-clothing.com had a very small selection of men's tops and shorts.  Lucy, no.  Athleta, no.  Be Present has light cotton, loose fitting pants, like the women's.

Here are some comments from the guys:

There's a vote for Inner Wave 92% organic cotton shorts. Tony says they are comfortable, light and durable and reasonable at $44 a pair. John likes his clothes to hug his body pretty tightly.   He feels it helps him move better and keeps him toasty as he's warming up.  He likes his shorts almost like boxer briefs.  Daniel likes the standard, easy-to-wear and buy, Fruit of the Loom Ts.  Shy is "married to my amazing Work2Play pinstriped slacks/yoga pants combo by Lululemon."  He's bummed they don't make them anymore.  Since his 6 weeks in Thailand, he's touting the "colorful, silky and ultralight rayon pants - which are softer and more biodegradable than cotton".(1)

I'm thinking he missing male yoga wear is all about money.  With only 18% of yoga practitioners being men, it's no surprise that there's a small or no selection.  And, there's lots of cross-over between athletic wear and yoga wear. The tops and bottoms for running can easily be used for yoga and vice-versa.

Phew!  That concludes the my review.  Thanks for listening and thanks guys for your input!  Comment?  Let me know.

(1) Shy brought some back and he's got them for sale at his Yoga One locations.

Why You Take the Next Breath
Yoga Educator (his definition), Leslie Kaminoff, offers a simplified explanation of a very complex body function.   He calls it the Causal Chain of Breathing.  Clue:  It's about C02.  We can control this process, to a degree.  In yoga, we refer to altering the breath as pranayama.  Click on the video above to watch.
Sleep Your Way to the Top
In the Mind & Body section of the Greater Good - The Science of a Meaningful Life, Jill Suttie, interviews Matt Walker on how sleep affects us not just physically, but emotionally, affecting all aspects of our life, especially our relationships.

A bit:

"Many Americans are against sleep, equating it with laziness. But one of the world's leading experts on sleep says that's hurting our relationships and our ability to solve problems."  and, "So, sleep before learning is critical; but you also need to sleep after learning, and to take that new information and essentially cement it into the neural architecture of the brain. Here, a different type of electrical activity comes into play: Slow wave sleep-a deeper state of non-REM sleep-which helps solidify recently learned memories, so that we don't forget them. It's like hitting the save button on a new word document that you've just typed up for the day."

In Praise of Older Yoga Teachers

Thanks for sharing this article via Facebook, Tony Briggs.  Much to think and talk about.  Not only am I "older" (I guess), but I've been teaching for many fewer years than my age contemporaries.  There is nothing like experience and time on and off the mat to build wisdom, knowledge and teaching nuance.  What do you think?  Read the article here.

Language in Practice
The first three practices of the eightfold path are right view, right intention, and right speech. These make right conduct possible, and when there is right conduct, there can be meditation practice and mindfulness, which lead to wisdom, thereby reinforcing right view. So from the first, the Buddha saw that our language conditions our spirituality through our views, intentions, and uttered words, and that training in an increased awareness of this process has to be the starting point for spiritual practice.

happy hour
Don't be Miserable on Fridays!
Instead of shots of tequila and fried artichoke hearts, spend your Friday happy hour moving and grooving at an
most-levels vinyasa flow class.

On Friday's from 4:30 - 6:00, we'll end each week with an energetic vinyasa flow class.  Through building heat from the inside, we'll strip out the stress hormones from the day.  A long rest at the end of class will reset our nervous system and prepare us for our weekend.

You'll be done at 6:00!!  That'll leave plenty of time for dinner with friends, a movie or a relaxing evening with your pooch.  Or, maybe a Chia filled Kombucha or that 100% agave margarita!
