The Yoga Clothing Issue (Pt 3)
Next week: Men's!

Is this Yoga Clothing Review still going on, you may ask.  You may even wonder to yourself or out loud, "doesn't she have anything better to yack about except something superficial like yoga 'clothing'?".  What about the importance of honoring the past year and setting our sights on the new. Why not tell us why a habit is not made in 21 or 28 days or shorter or longer or how research shows how yoga and meditation support mental health and recovery from anxiety, depression, addiction, chronic pain, and trauma?

The answer is YES, we're continuing on and I suspect there may be even a bit more.  I appreciate all of your input.  Keep your cards and letters coming (electronically, that is).

HardTail - I love Hardtail clothing.  They were my first "roll-down" waisted pant many years ago.  Fortunately the "roll-down" could be rolled down to the pubic bone for some or rolled up to cover the belly for others (me).  Brilliant.  It's entertaining to check out the uber-bendy girls in crazy poses on their website where they describe their product as:  "Premium sportswear and denim fashion house stands out in the crowd because of its delicious color palette and signature design elements."  Hardtail does not sell online from their website, so you've got to find it where you can.  Westside Yoga Studio in Sebastopol always has a creative selection of Hardtail.  Being mostly cotton, I've found that the black fades and fabric bags at the stretched points, both traits of cotton.

Zobha -  I own a lot of Zobha, as does any friend or student of Ann Austin's.  She's notorious for attending their big warehouse sale (they were local in Mill Valley) and buying arms full of Zobha to give to her students.  Thanks, Ann.  Zobha makes beautiful clothing that I consider body flattering.  The tops are cut a bit longer to compensate for long or full-waisted gals and the pants have a tad higher rise. The fabric is wearable and washable.  Zobha was recently sold, but the website is still up.  I haven't purchased anything lately, so I can't attest to the quality with new owners or how long the brand will be around.  I do know, however, that there's a lot on sale.  Find it here.

The Rest:

Yoga is expensive enough without spending umpteen dollars on yoga wear.  Why overpay for something that's pretty generic. Most yoga wear is black with cotton and some spandex. You could throw in some organic cotton, some recycled water bottles, some bamboo.  Line up 10 yogis and without the status tags, I bet you couldn't tell the difference between makes and models.

There are perfectly good choices at The Gap, Old Navy, and Goodwill or other thrift stores.  I love the colorful t-shirts at The Gap. They wash and wear well and are great to layer over a colorful sports bra. Macy's (and other department stores) often has a department devoted to yoga where you can find Zella(?), Hardtail, OmGirl and Style&Co.

Graton Yoga regular, Judy, was the most practical: "short sleeve T with any design and a sweatshirt in case I am cold".  Marty finds that actually "doing" yoga is what's important and her workout pants and a handy t-shirt are just fine.  Cathryn  loves-the-hand me downs from her favorite teacher, Ann Austin.   Speaking of hand me downs, Alive Yoga  in Sebastopol hosted a Yoga Clothing Swap last year.  We should do it again?

Most yogis expressed that fit and comfort were most critical. Keeping the girls covered in downward dog, handstand, backbends and forward folds can be a challenge with floppy or low-cut tops.  Price and practicality are equally important.  We don't need any more yoga tops in the landfill.

Next Week:  What about the Men?  It's coming, I swear.  Surprisingly, many yogis had quite a lot to say about the state of men's yoga clothing.  Find out next week.

How to be Miserable
This is a fun read.  It's "The 14 Habits of Highly Miserably People".  I got it off of Facebook*.  Here's a clip:

"So if you aspire to make yourself miserable, what are the best, most proven techniques for doing it? Let's exclude some obvious ways, like doing drugs, committing crimes, gambling, and beating up your spouse or neighbor. Subtler strategies, ones that won't lead anyone to suspect that you're acting deliberately, can be highly effective. "

Read all about it here.

*Thx FB friends.
Sleep Your Way to the Top
In the Mind & Body section of the Greater Good - The Science of a Meaningful Life, Jill Suttie, interviews Matt Walker on how sleep affects us not just physically, but emotionally, affecting all aspects of our life, especially our relationships.

A bit:

"Many Americans are against sleep, equating it with laziness. But one of the world's leading experts on sleep says that's hurting our relationships and our ability to solve problems."  and, "So, sleep before learning is critical; but you also need to sleep after learning, and to take that new information and essentially cement it into the neural architecture of the brain. Here, a different type of electrical activity comes into play: Slow wave sleep-a deeper state of non-REM sleep-which helps solidify recently learned memories, so that we don't forget them. It's like hitting the save button on a new word document that you've just typed up for the day."

Want more.  It's here.

In Praise of Older Yoga Teachers

Thanks for sharing this article via Facebook, Tony Briggs.  Much to think and talk about.  Not only am I "older" (I guess), but I've been teaching for many fewer years than my age contemporaries.  There is nothing like experience and time on and off the mat to build wisdom, knowledge and teaching nuance.  What do you think?  Read the article here.

Language in Practice
The first three practices of the eightfold path are right view, right intention, and right speech. These make right conduct possible, and when there is right conduct, there can be meditation practice and mindfulness, which lead to wisdom, thereby reinforcing right view. So from the first, the Buddha saw that our language conditions our spirituality through our views, intentions, and uttered words, and that training in an increased awareness of this process has to be the starting point for spiritual practice.

happy hour
Don't be Miserable on Fridays!
Instead of shots of tequila and fried artichoke hearts, spend your Friday happy hour moving and grooving at an
most-levels vinyasa flow class.

On Friday's from 4:30 - 6:00, we'll end each week with an energetic vinyasa flow class.  Through building heat from the inside, we'll strip out the stress hormones from the day.  A long rest at the end of class will reset our nervous system and prepare us for our weekend.

You'll be done at 6:00!!  That'll leave plenty of time for dinner with friends, a movie or a relaxing evening with your pooch.  Or, maybe a Chia filled Kombucha or that 100% agave margarita!
