The Yoga Clothing Issue (Pt 1)
Next week:  Prana, Lucy and Men's!

It's here!  The Yoga clothing issue just like the big glossies. I know you've been waiting.  It's Part 1, which means there'll be more.  Yoga clothes are important, well, not really.  But, let's do it anyway.

Yoga is big business. Just like the movie business, it's not about the movie, it's about the Coke and popcorn and assorted dolls and action figures.  Just check out the number of yoga "related" items on Gaiam.com.  There are totes and socks and bamboo blocks.  There are power cords and dry grip mats.

Back to the clothing.  There are lots of choices and price points, for sure.  There's Old Navy's pants for a mere $10 up to Sweaty Betty's "basic" pants at $120.  Betty's prices surpass my once loved, but now shuttered, Clarey Sage.

What do you wear, is what I asked and many thanks to those of you who responded.  Thank you Heidi, Judy, Carmela and Robin.

Carmela offered us a brief history of the "yoga pant".  Many moons ago Carmela remembers wearing white drawstring pants and a leotard top.  The other option was the Jane Fonda total leotard look with the footless leotard bottoms or the "stir-up thingy on the feet".  Thankfully, yoga clothes have become more "forgiving" and varied.

Here are a few of the commonly seen yoga clothing companies:

Lululemon -  With the CEO now gone, maybe Lululemon can regain some of its image which was lost to misplaced even racist comments like this. There was the fabric piling and sheerness.  Aside from its recent problems, Lululemon was one of the first brands to highlight yoga as a lifestyle. You could walk out of the studio and go to lunch in your Lululemons.

The sky high price tags of Lululemon have not kept customers away.  It's by far the most popular tag in urban yoga settings. I do not wear Lululemon not because of the price or popularity.  I like their styling, colors and stores.  They just don't fit my body well.  The rise on the pants is too low, creating the much to be avoided camel toe.  However, I do have a top I purchased at of their flagship stores in Canada some 14 years ago and it has outlasted every yoga-anything I've owned.  Actually, it could pass for brand new.

Athleta - Athleta is part of the Banana Republic, Gap, Old Navy group.  They have cool looking stores and carry lots more than just yoga wear. My shorty-short black skirt I wear over my yoga pants is from Athleta.  Their sales are generous and right now you can get their Kickbooty Pant for $59.  Heidi says the Athleta pants are durable and true to size, but thinks their tops don't fit well and are overpriced.   Me?  I don't wear Athleta yoga clothes. The stores are cool, but I'm a bit overwhelmed by the ginormous selection.  And, it seems young.  But, that's me.

There more!!  Lots more.  Next week I'll cover Prana, Lucy, Athleta, The Gap and more.  And, what about men?  Where are all of the men's yoga wear?  And, there's still time to contribute.  Email me.

Shop Local, Give Yoga

It goes without saying that supporting your local businesses helps your friends and neighbors.  It keeps some of the money circling in the community rather than soaring from Bangladesh to China, then the Philippines and back again.

Give a yoga class(es) to your yogi or wanna-be yogi friend.  Whether it is a class series with your favorite teacher or a private or small group class, your friend will say Ah and Om and Yum!

Email me if I can help you book a private or small group yoga class or answer any questions.  I'll give you a nice gift certificate to present to your friend. I'm at cheryl@cherylthomas.com.

Secrets of a Long Marriage
I look forward to the emails from the Interdependence Project.  Their latest Top 10 blog posts contained this nugget on the secrets of a long marriage.

Here's a clip:

I am not the woman I was back then, and he's not that man. Our relationship's not the bright, shiny, untested, brand-spanking-new marriage it was in 1980. It's something different. It's been myriad relationships -- spouses, parents, adult children, caregivers, cared for, empty-nesters, full-lifers -- and that's how it lasts.

Accepting impermanence is key to staying married, actually. It's only by knowing that your relationship will change, your partner will change, your life conditions will change that you can stay. All of that will happen, of course, and if you fight it, if you cling to where it is at one stage or to an ideal of how it should be, it will fail.

So, it's about accepting change.  Read the rest here.  While you're on their site, sniff around. It's rich.  They have a great podcast also.
In Praise of Older Yoga Teachers

Thanks for sharing this article via Facebook, Tony Briggs.  Much to think and talk about.  Not only am I "older" (I guess), but I've been teaching for many fewer years than my age contemporaries.  There is nothing like experience and time on and off the mat to build wisdom, knowledge and teaching nuance.  What do you think?  Read the article here.

This is the Time for Gratitude
You know I'm a fan and supporter of Greater Good Science Center (GGSC) They're out of Berkeley and are a science-based..... well, better that they tell you.

Here's an excerpt from their recent email:

"In fact, here at the GGSC, we think that practicing gratitude year-round is the path to a happier and more resilient life. It's not always easy, but Jeremy Adam Smith has some suggestions for how to up your gratitude quotient with six habits of highly grateful people

"And Robert Emmons, the world's leading scientific expert on gratitude, debunks five myths about gratitude, challenging objections and misconceptions."

Good stuff, don't you think?

Yay Virgin Airlines
Gotta love Virgin Airlines and their innovative safety video.  Six million people watched it without stepping on a plan.  It's long, but entertaining for the creativity.

Breaking Through
It's imperative for us to understand that spiritual practice is not just something we do when we're sitting in meditation or when we're on retreat. Failing to see everything as an opportunity for practice is a setup for frustration and disappointment, keeping us stuck where we are and limiting our possibilities for inner growth. The more we include in our practice, the more satisfying our life can be.

Be Happy on Friday's
Instead of shots of tequila and fried artichoke hearts, spend your Friday happy hour moving and grooving at an
most-levels vinyasa flow class.

On Friday's from 4:30 - 6:00, we'll end each week with an energetic vinyasa flow class.  Through building heat from the inside, we'll strip out the stress hormones from the day.  A long rest at the end of class will reset our nervous system and prepare us for our weekend.

You'll be done at 6:00!!  That'll leave plenty of time for dinner with friends, a movie or a relaxing evening with your pooch.  Or, maybe a Chia filled Kombucha or that 100% agave margarita!
