How do you Sleep?

Our sleeping habits are individual.  There are the side, belly and back sleepers, the flippers, floppers and face-downers. Some barely move and others wake up with sheets and duvet entangled.

We spend one-third of our lives sleeping (well, we used to).  We take care of our spines during our waking hours keeping it erect and well balanced while we sit and surf and run and play. We tell ourselves all day to keep our shoulders down.  But, what's our spine doing while we sleep? Surprisingly, we don't think much about it. Who'd know that our head is awkwardly hanging forward and turned and our shoulders are all askew--one forward, one back, one high and one low (you get the picture).

As I'm sure you've heard, sleeping on our belly is not good.  The neck is extended and rotated leading to a variety of issues, including compress of the nerves. Look at the photo above.  The right shoulder is hiked up, the head is extended and twisted and the lower back is over-arched.  Can you image what this position would look like standing and being static for hours? (Ouch!)  There's no good way to sleep on your stomach.  So, stop it, I guess.

Sixty-percent of us are back-sleepers.  Sleeping on your back is good, but not with a mass of pillows.  Speaking of masses of pillows, have you noticed the number of pillows that come with your hotel room?(1) Using a pillow that is too high puts your head in the exact head-forward position we're trying to avoid during the day (a reverse curve).  Make sure your pillow is low, putting your head in a neutral position.  Can you try "not" using a pillow--that would be optimal for your spine.  Those contour pillows are nice, but aren't high enough for side sleepers (see below).   People with sleep apnea or chronic snoring should not sleep on their back.

Then there's the side-sleepers. This can be a fine position given that the pillow is high enough to fill the gap between your shoulder and head.  If it's not high enough, the head hangs.  My amazing Rolfer practitioner, Scott Quinn(2), corrected me on my sleeping posture (not directly, of course).  It turns out that the fetal position, although comforting, is not good for me. According Quinn, I want to keep our spine straight, so if I'm sleeping on your side, I need to keep my head, shoulders and hips in the same line.  I've been actively trying this and it takes practice, for sure. I also want to keep my top shoulder over the bottom shoulder and not allow it to fall forward.(3).  Having a "hug" pillow helps.

Why do we care?  Keeping our spine and the surrounding musculature healthy goes a long way to our general well-being.  Notice when you wake up with sore neck, that often then turns into a headache, and eventually evolves into a fight with the spouse.  Selecting the right sleeping position can help avoid the neck, back and hip pain, which sometimes greets us in the morning.  No pain, better mood, happier family, friends and co-workers!

Don't be fooled by the claims that it's the mattress and not us.  I'm sure we're getting a screwing by the mattress companies who have us convinced that it's the bed that makes the difference. Have you seen the price of some of these beds?  Pillows, too. Are you one of those that take your pillow on trips?

Your sleeping shape also affects the hips/pelvis.  Depending on your body shape, you may want to add a pillow between your legs while sleeping on your side.  This keeps the top leg from falling forward and dragging on the pelvis  This can go a long way to helping people with pelvic/back issues like sciatica or iliosacral joint pain.  Slide a pillow under the knees when on the back, and your lower back will thank you.

I'm working on my mine sleep posture. Every time I wake up, I try to correct my position. I've usually find I've slid onto my side, spine rounded, head forward, and top shoulder hunched.  Or, worse yet, I'm half side and half belly!  I'm trying and I'm finding my neck, in particular, is feeling better in the morning.

Yoga in Grace Cathedral - This Tuesday (Oct. 29)

After the success of our Stand-Up Paddle Board Yoga event, Yoga Out the Door strikes again. Let's all gather to share our yoga practice IN Grace Cathedral in San Francisco.  Yoga teacher, Darren Main, leads class on the Labryinth on a donation basis. It's pretty magical. See the video above.

The class starts at 6:15.  It fills up fast, so allow for plenty of time to park, find your way in and use the bathroom. There's a bit of construction at the entrance, so it's a bit tricky to wind your way in.  Let's all meet to the left of the labyrinth if you're facing the front of the church.  Plan on a yummy meal after.

Let me know if you're joining us so we can look out for you.  And, us North Bay yogis can coordinate transportation.

Our next Yoga Out The Door event--Rusty Wells!  Have ideas or suggestions, let me know.

Kottke and This is Colossal
If you're going to spend your precious hours shopping on Amazon, Craigslist Facebook HuffPo or NYT, then you must add Kottke.org and This is Colossal (thisiscolossal.com) to your browsing hours.  Just this week at Kottke, "Ex-Racists Explain their Conversion", and the "CDC states: We've reached the end of antibiotics"

At This Is Colossal, the art is truly colossal.  Check out the kinetic artwork powered by the wind.  It's beautiful and amazing at the same time.  The video is above and the Colossal's site is here.
Trying to Be Happy Can Work
From ScienceDaily, one of my favorite inbox arrivals, reported on a study about happiness where we can "think" ourselves happy.

Here's a bit:  "In the first study, two sets of participants listened to 'happy' music. Those who actively tried to feel happier reported the highest level of positive mood afterwards. In the second study, participants listened to a range of 'positive' music over a two-week period; those who were instructed to focus on improving their happiness experienced a greater increase in happiness than those who were told just to focus on the music."

So, let's think of some happy music...."Celebrate Good Times",
"Mr. Jones and Me", "Mexico".

Speaking Afresh
It turns out we learned to qualify everything, to say 'almost' and 'perhaps' and 'it could be' and 'it's likely' and 'maybe,' maybe too well. As befits the understandings of contemporary physics, Truth became statistical truth and never an absolute. Now, in the wake of wars and tragedies, we can't seem to find our way back to fresh and vivid ways of saying, 'Here I take my stand' and 'This, I believe.'

Be Happy on Friday's
Instead of shots of tequila and fried artichoke hearts, spend your Friday happy hour moving and grooving at an
most-levels vinyasa flow class.

On Friday's from 4:30 - 6:00, we'll end each week with an energetic vinyasa flow class.  Through building heat from the inside, we'll strip out the stress hormones from the day.  A long rest at the end of class will reset our nervous system and prepare us for our weekend.

You'll be done at 6:00!!  That'll leave plenty of time for dinner with friends, a movie or a relaxing evening with your pooch.  Or, maybe a Chia filled Kombucha or that 100% agave margarita!

Get Your Girlfriends Together

It's fun to get friends together.  Treat your friends to Yoga and Tea rather than Food and Booze.  Inviting friends to come together for a Gentle or Restorative Yoga class is a perfect way to enjoy each other's company and do something good for yourselves.  Many yoga parties end with tea or champagne and some munchies.  Your friends will thank you!

Please call on me if I can help you book a private yoga class or answer any questions.  I can be reached at cheryl@cherylthomas.com.
