Adapto-Whats?  They're Vital Bites

With your first bite you realize they're yummy, dessert-like, definitely with chocolate, satisfyingly small, smooth yet a bit gritty, and punctuated with coconut shavings.  You'd think they're a calorie-laden, transfat-containing, palm-oil saturated dessert nugget, but they're not.  They're Vitality Truffles or you can call them Vitality Bites, or just Vital Bites.

The Ceres Project, the non-profit organization that brings teens to the kitchen to prepare nutritious and love-infused meals for families with health challenges, has a cookbook   On Page 187, you'll find a recipe for these delectable nuggets, Vitality Truffles.  Looking at the ingredients list, you'd be surprised to find crazy sounding ingredients like eleuthero powder, Gourmet Mushroom's Tri-Mycogen mushroom powder, schisandra, licorice, slippery elm, and ashwaganda powder.  What?  What are those ingredients doing in my dessert bomb?

These Vital Bites (let's call them that), contain what's traditionally considered a therapeutic dose of adaptogen herbs.  These herbs, according to the cookbook, "are considered tonics and have been used for centuries in both Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine to enhance vitality and well-being."  Adaptogens, according to modern herbalists, are a class of herbs that provide a system-wide resistance to a broad range of factors.  They have a balancing effect on the body and enhance our capacity to manage our emotional, physical and environmental stress.

Ayurvedic doctor, John Douillard, says "adaptogens" are a special class of herbs which help the body cope with stress without stimulating or sedating the body.  Adaptogens are considered herbs that can offer both energy in the morning, but allow you to sleep better at night. Call it rejuvenation, these herbs can help us deal with stressful situations and compromised immunity.

A bit smaller than a ping-pong ball, these Vital Bites are actually nuggets of stress-relief.  The Ceres Project's recipe suggests eating one a day.  You'll have to restrain yourself from eating more, really.  It couldn't be easier to get your daily dose of goodness.  I know you're wondering, how do I get a hold of these tasty-little goodies?  You can make them.  I did. The recipe is in Nourishing Connection by Cathryn Couch and JoEllen DeNicola (via Amazon)(1). If you want a scanned copy of the recipe from the book, email me here.  Yes, you'll have to look around for these herbs. Fortunately, I have an herb store in town and they're easy to get, although not inexpensive. You can buy them at The Ceres Project's office or if you want some, but don't have the time or inclination to make them, you can ask me and I'll make you some.  Really, I will.  You may have questions. I know I did the first time I made them.  Ask, I'll try to help.

I've been making the Vital Bites for friends who have a health challenge and have received enthusiastic reviews. Even those that have lost their appetite due to chemo treatments found them appetizing.  I put two out each morning, one for me and my hubby. We munch on it or take it with us a snack. These Bites aren't the only way to get your adaptogens, but it certainly is the yummiest!

Yoga on the Labyrinth - with Darren Main
Yoga on the Labyrinth - with Darren Main
Yoga in Grace Cathedral

After the success of our Stand-Up Paddle Board Yoga event, Yoga Out the Door strikes again. Let's all gather to share our yoga practice IN Grace Cathedral in San Francisco.  Yoga teacher, Darren Main, leads class on the Labryinth on a donation basis. It's pretty magical. See the video above.

The class starts at 6:15.  It fills up fast, so allow for plenty of time to park, find your way in and use the bathroom. There's a bit of construction at the entrance, so it's a bit tricky to wind your way in.  Let's all meet to the left of the labyrinth if you're facing the front of the church.  Plan on a yummy meal after.

Let me know if you're joining us so we can look out for you.  And, us North Bay yogis can coordinate transportation.  More details will come as the date gets closer.

Our next Yoga Out The Door event--Rusty Wells!  Have ideas or suggestions, let me know.

Trying to Be Happy Can Work
From ScienceDaily, one of my favorite inbox arrivals, reported on a study about happiness where we can "think" ourselves happy.

Here's a bit:  "In the first study, two sets of participants listened to 'happy' music. Those who actively tried to feel happier reported the highest level of positive mood afterwards. In the second study, participants listened to a range of 'positive' music over a two-week period; those who were instructed to focus on improving their happiness experienced a greater increase in happiness than those who were told just to focus on the music."

So, let's think of some happy music...."Celebrate Good Times",
"Mr. Jones and Me", "Mexico".
Divorce After 50 Grows More Common
Say it isn't so.  It's my experience with my set of friends that, yes, many are finding themselves divorced after age 50.  Disaster?  I don't think so, but it takes some adjustment.  An adjustment that includes some counseling and lots of rethinking of  income, employment, retirement and identity.

In 1990, 1 in 10 was over 59 or older. By 2011, it was more than 1 in 4.  Read the entire report right here.  Here's a clip.

"I don't necessarily think this will accelerate, but I don't expect it to go down," she said. "Staying together until death do us part is a bigger challenge than it used to be because we expect so much more of marriage than we did in the past, and we have so many more options when a marriage doesn't live up to those expectations.

The Role of the Teacher
A teacher, out of compassion and love, seeing that somebody is suffering, gives a path. But each individual has to walk on the path. There is no magical miracle with the teacher. Totally out of the question. He only shows the path. That is the only role of the teacher, nothing else.

Be Happy on Friday's
Instead of shots of tequila and fried artichoke hearts, spend your Friday happy hour moving and grooving at an
most-levels vinyasa flow class.

On Friday's from 4:30 - 6:00, we'll end each week with an energetic vinyasa flow class.  Through building heat from the inside, we'll strip out the stress hormones from the day.  A long rest at the end of class will reset our nervous system and prepare us for our weekend.

You'll be done at 6:00!!  That'll leave plenty of time for dinner with friends, a movie or a relaxing evening with your pooch.  Or, maybe a Chia filled Kombucha or that 100% agave margarita!

Get Your Girlfriends Together

It's fun to get friends together.  Treat your friends to Yoga and Tea rather than Food and Booze.  Inviting friends to come together for a Gentle or Restorative Yoga class is a perfect way to enjoy each other's company and do something good for yourselves.  Many yoga parties end with tea or champagne and some munchies.  Your friends will thank you!

Please call on me if I can help you book a private yoga class or answer any questions.  I can be reached at cheryl@cherylthomas.com.
