Knee
The Precious Knee

We scraped it on the schoolyard playground, it supported us on the red vinyl benches in church, and it demands attention when shaving it with your new Schick Quattro for Women.  Your yoga instructor obsesses over it in Warrior II. It gets blown out on the ski slopes.

And, yes, it causes frustration as you struggle to inch your foot up your thigh in full lotus.
It's our precious knee, one of the largest, most fragile and most abused joint in the body.

The wondrous body is woven, strapped and taped together in miraculous ways.  Joints and muscles move in rhythm allowing us to play tennis, run Bay to Breakers, and play ball with your kid in the street like our neighbor.  However, the knee joint, as compared to the other joints of the body, is a bit different.  The three long bones that meet at the knee (femur, tibia and fibula, along with the patella) are in relatively poor contact.

'Unfortunately, the knee's mechanics are better suited to chasing animals for dinner than to sliding into second base", says Stephen Messier, professor of health and exercise science at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. "We weren't designed to do the things we do with our bodies nowadays," he explains. "The knee's engineering isn't the greatest." (1)   Acting as cushions between these incongruent bones that make up the knee joint are meniscal discs that separate and lubricate them, and then it's wrapped up by a synovial joint capsule.  Everything slips and slides as it should, kind of.

The joint is held together by four strong ligaments, like straps, on the back of the knee and at the patella, and two on the sides of the knee.  These straps literally hold the knee together, keeping it stable.  There is no elastic tissue in these ligaments and they do not stretch without consequences.  Stretching them leaves them permanently loose and ineffective in stabilizing the knee.  (As a comparison, some ligaments can be stretched up to 25 to 30% and up to 200% in the cervical spine.)  In general, there is no need to stretch the ligaments in yoga, as it can destabilize the associated joint.

Our femur, the thigh bone, is angled with respect to the vertical line of the lower leg.  The movement and action of the hip directly affect the knee.  Of the 11 muscles that cross the knee, 7 also cross the hip joint (3 hamstring and 4 quadriceps).  The load on the knee when the foot strikes the ground when walking is 4 times the body weight and 8 times when running.  Done to excess, the cartilage of the knee can become irritated and can possibly lead to arthritis and/or bursitis in or around the joint.

Most importantly for us yogis is to remember that the knee is a hinge joint.  Any other movement laterally or rotation around any axis risks damage to the ligaments and/or menisci.  A misalignment of the knee is especially risky in weight bearing poses, like the Warriors, chair pose and side angle pose.  Add to that the struggles to get the butt down in virasana and heels to the belly in Padmasana and a poor knee joint can get taxed.

In contrast, proper exercise can actually help protect the knee, whether you're with a trainer at the gym or in a yoga studio.  Strong muscles in the legs can help support the structure of the knee and many find their yoga practice has literally "cured" their knee problems.

There is really no "good" joint knee pain. So, be kind to your knees.  However you're sitting, and I guess you're sitting, give them a sweet, loving rub.

Louis C.K. Hates Cell Phones

Bravo Mr. C.K., My New Hero
My new hero is Louis C.K. for his diatribe on why he'd not giving his daughter a cell phone.  Well, it's not really about his daughter, it's about how we use our "devices" to zone out and disconnect from life.  This video is flying around the Buddhist communities, as he hits on (knowingly or not) the 4 Noble Truths.  See The IDProject's article here. Regardless, a man willing to admit to weeping while listening to Jungleland is loveable.

Yoga on the Labyrinth - with Darren Main
Yoga in Grace Cathedral

After the success of our Stand-Up Paddle Board Yoga event, Yoga Out the Door strikes again. Let's all gather to share our yoga practice IN Grace Cathedral in San Francisco.  Yoga teacher, Darren Main, leads class on the Labryinth on a donation basis. It's pretty magical. See the video above.

The class starts at 6:15.  It fills up fast, so allow for plenty of time to park, find your way in and use the bathroom. There's a bit of construction at the entrance, so it's a bit tricky to wind your way in.  Let's all meet to the left of the labyrinth if you're facing the front of the church.  Plan on a yummy meal after.

Let me know if you're joining us so we can look out for you.  And, us North Bay yogis can coordinate transportation.  More details will come as the date gets closer.

Our next Yoga Out The Door event--Rusty Wells!  Have ideas or suggestions, let me know.

When the Going Gets Tough, the Materialistic Go Shopping
ScienceDaily reported that a recent study suggested that "materialism's intensifying effect on extreme stress may be driven by a global response to fear of death and by low self-esteem."

Also,

"When the going gets tough, the materialistic go shopping . . . and this compulsive and impulsive spending is likely to produce even greater stress and lower well-being. Essentially, materialism appears to make bad events even worse."

Divorce After 50 Grows More Common
Say it isn't so.  It's my experience with my set of friends that, yes, many are finding themselves divorced after age 50.  Disaster?  I don't think so, but it takes some adjustment.  An adjustment that includes some counseling and lots of rethinking of  income, employment, retirement and identity.

In 1990, 1 in 10 was over 59 or older. By 2011, it was more than 1 in 4.  Read the entire report right here.  Here's a clip.

"I don't necessarily think this will accelerate, but I don't expect it to go down," she said. "Staying together until death do us part is a bigger challenge than it used to be because we expect so much more of marriage than we did in the past, and we have so many more options when a marriage doesn't live up to those expectations.

New Agey Self Help Books
Here's one person's opinion of the 6 "Totally Must Read" new agey self help books.  Frankly, I haven't read one, but I don't read that much self-help, but that's me, and it may be obvious to you(!).  What about you?  Are they on your list?  I like Pema Chodron's comments.  Check it out here.   From Elephant Journal.
Epidural Injection
Steroid Shots for Back Pain
Many of you have or know someone that uses an epidural injection of steroids to manage back pain.  The NYT is reporting that:

"Injecting steroids into the area around the spinal cord, known as an epidural, is the most commonly used treatment for back pain, but a new review of studies suggests that injecting any liquid, even plain saline solution, works just as well."

Very interesting, don't you think. Here's the report.

Gateway to Compassion
The gateway to compassion and lovingkindness is to be able to feel our own pain, and the pain of others. If we are able to open in this way, our hearts can melt, and the healing salve of compassion can anoint all our wounds.

Be Happy on Friday's
Instead of shots of tequila and fried artichoke hearts, spend your Friday happy hour moving and grooving at an
most-levels vinyasa flow class.

On Friday's from 4:30 - 6:00, we'll end each week with an energetic vinyasa flow class.  Through building heat from the inside, we'll strip out the stress hormones from the day.  A long rest at the end of class will reset our nervous system and prepare us for our weekend.

You'll be done at 6:00!!  That'll leave plenty of time for dinner with friends, a movie or a relaxing evening with your pooch.  Or, maybe a Chia filled Kombucha or that 100% agave margarita!

Get Your Girlfriends Together

It's fun to get friends together.  Treat your friends to Yoga and Tea rather than Food and Booze.  Inviting friends to come together for a Gentle or Restorative Yoga class is a perfect way to enjoy each other's company and do something good for yourselves.  Many yoga parties end with tea or champagne and some munchies.  Your friends will thank you!

Please call on me if I can help you book a private yoga class or answer any questions.  I can be reached at cheryl@cherylthomas.com.
