  Lucky

Cultivating Luck

"It's a funny thing, the more I practice the luckier I get"  This was Arnold Palmer's response to the claim that he's "lucky".  Sometimes it seems some people are just lucky (or unlucky).  So, it begs the questions, can luck be cultivated, manufactured, willed, coaxed, begged?

I'll tell you a story that just happened on Saturday night at the Ceres Project's wildly successful fundraiser.  One of the fundraisers was to buy a ticket to be drawn for the "big" prize of $2500 worth of wine.  Your "ticket" was a playing card.  Our friend, Molly, won!  (Thankfully, she's my friend and I'm hoping she'll do some sharing.)  Here's how it ties in.  She manifested her win.  Here's Molly:  "I immediately started picturing it [the card]. . . . Whenever I saw anyone and we were chit-chatting, I'd picture the card.  I'd mention the card.  I think it's setting an intention . . .like it already happened. Seeing the wine coming to [me] . . . as it's happening, rather than wishing it's happening.  [Otherwise] you're stuck with wishing rather than having."  Congratulations, Molly!

Luck can be a teachable skill set.  Turns out that scientific research shows that luck can be cultivated.  One of the suggestions is to do the things that "lucky" people do.  Turns out these fortunate folks talk to strangers(1).  This comes much easier for some of us than others.  Sometimes I play a game to see if I can get the other person to smile.  Try it.  While at the checkout with your Three Twins Cardamom Ice Cream and your Casa Sanchez Thick and Crispy Tortilla Chips (the best), see if you can get a reaction out of the checker.  This will vary from store-to-store.  It seems like customer service in some stores is over-the-top.  I get questions like, "how's your morning been?", "what do you have planned for the rest of your day?" and "you on your lunchbreak?".*   And, other stores,  I won't name, have a grumpier face, like you're taking their time away their facebook page or something.

OK, back to talking to strangers.  It doesn't need to be intimate, just "wow, what great weather today" or "can you believe these organic blueberries are on sale?" or "I really like the color of your jacket."  None of these were personal or particularly required a response, but you made a connection.  You'll be surprised how people will open up.  Do this often and you'll be surprised at what seeming "luck" can come to you.  According to the research, this is considered "lucky" behavior.  Who knew?

Peter Shallard, who calls himself the Shrink for Entrepreneurs, offers some advice.(2)  He suggests staying curious and being open to the unseen or the unknown.  He says, "Reach out, engage, send emails and more. Give yourself permission to not always begin every action with an end in mind."  Just like talking to strangers, Mr. Shallard says that people are lightning rods for lucky breaks and adds that the "the smarter and more karmically enlightened, the better".

And, of course, being in the right place at the right time can be helpful.  But, by opening yourself up to strangers and staying curious, you may find that you've cultivated that right place and time. So, good luck to you!

*Frankly, this annoys me.  It seems a bit too personal and living the lifestyle I do, each day i filled with a variety of things "planned for the rest of my day".  I don't really feel a need to chat about it.  So there.

Santa Rosa's One of the Happiest Cities
Maybe it's the new YogaOne Studio.  Maybe it's all the organic, localicious food. Maybe it UnderCover Baking Agency. Maybe it's the proximity to Sebastopol.  Santa Rosa ranked right up there with all the other cool cities to live like Asheville and Boulder.

Published earlier this year in PLoS ONE by researchers at the University of Vermont:

"The team scored more than 10,000 words on a positive-negative scale and measured their frequency in millions of tweets across the country, deliberately ignoring context to eliminate experimental bias. What emerged was significant regional variation in happiness by this calculation, which correlates with other lifestyle measures such as gun violence, obesity."

red night light
The Color of Your Night Light can Affect your Mood

ScienceDaily reported a new study about the color of your night lights, with special interest to those that work night shifts.  I thought you'd enjoy it.  Here's an excerpt:

When it comes to some of the health hazards of light at night, a new study suggests that the color of the light can make a big difference. In a study involving hamsters, researchers found that blue light had the worst effects on mood-related measures, followed closely by white light.

But hamsters exposed to red light at night had significantly less evidence of depressive-like symptoms and changes in the brain linked to depression, compared to those that experienced blue or white light.

The only hamsters that fared better than those exposed to red light were those that had total darkness at night.

Dealing with Change

From Tricyle.com

Buddhism is often paired up with unlikely fields: technology, addiction, business, geeks. Sometimes the combination can get sticky; at times, it can be brilliant.

This week, Tricycle contributing editor Mark Epstein speaks with Amy Gross on the pairing of Buddhism and psychotherapy, in the debut episode of our audio series, Tricycle Talks. Dr. Mark Epstein notes that the paradox of clinical therapy is that "although impermanence is one of the fundamental laws of the universe, most people do not want to change."

Sound familiar?

It's OK to be hesitant to change. Just remember what the Buddha taught: once suffering is known and clinging abandoned, change comes with ease.

Regarding Doubt
If I'm torn between truth and falsehood, I have to ask myself if the choice I'm leaning toward would be self-serving or selfless, harsh or kind, harmful or harmless. Only then can I know what's best to do.

happy hour
Be Happy on Friday's
Instead of shots of tequila and fried artichoke hearts, spend your Friday happy hour moving and grooving at an
most-levels vinyasa flow class.

On Friday's from 4:30 - 6:00, we'll end each week with an energetic vinyasa flow class.  Through building heat from the inside, we'll strip out the stress hormones from the day.  A long rest at the end of class will reset our nervous system and prepare us for our weekend.

You'll be done at 6:00!!  That'll leave plenty of time for dinner with friends, a movie or a relaxing evening with your pooch.  Or, maybe a Chia filled Kombucha or that 100% agave margarita!

Get Your Girlfriends Together

It's fun to get friends together.  Treat your friends to Yoga and Tea rather than Food and Booze.  Inviting friends to come together for a Gentle or Restorative Yoga class is a perfect way to enjoy each other's company and do something good for yourselves.  Many yoga parties end with tea or champagne and some munchies.  Your friends will thank you!

Please call on me if I can help you book a private yoga class or answer any questions.  I can be reached at cheryl@cherylthomas.com.
