People Trusting People

Trust always amazes me.  So does distrust.  Who trusts or doesn't trust what/whom and why. Remember when we wouldn't buy on the internet because we were afraid someone would steal our credit card number.  Or, being advised to never give out your social security number.  Dang, I use my credit card on the internet, seems like every day, but that's between you and me.  And my social security number, it must be all over India.  Got a lock on your cell phone?  Most people do.  As the world gets smaller and more transparent, there's a general paranoia about how much our lives are monitored.  Did you notice the shock when people realized our government could monitor our interactions, as if it was some surprise.

Check out this article about a guy who with some plastic boxes, computer sensors and wi-fi adapters set up an elaborate monitoring system where you could, and I quote from the article, "Spy on your ex-lover, by placing the sensor boxes near the places the person frequents, or your teenage child, or the residents of a particular neighborhood . . . certain house of worship or take part in a protest demonstration in a town square. . . the boxes are small enough to be tucked under a cafe table or dropped from a hobby drone. They can be scattered around a city and go unnoticed."   This technology is readily available.  You don't have to be Big Gov to access it.  Read about it here.

There are risks we take on vacation which we would never do at home.  But, when you need help, you trust people to be kind and honest.  I recall when I was in Chiang Mai and wanted to get to a yoga class.  All I had was an address.  With no taxis at the hotel in the early morning, the kind manager called his friend who showed up with his motorcycle. In a foreign country, I climbed on a motorcycle (no helmet, of course), with a man I did not know taking me some place neither he nor I knew how to get to.  Making several stops to ask directions, he timely got me to my destination.  Would I have done that in San Francisco?  Hell no.

Some years ago my friend, Lori, participated in the "soft commute" from the East Bay to her corporate job in San Francisco.  Single drivers would pick up business-suited folks, (then) briefcase in hand, at a designated spot by the side of the road.  Everyone would enjoy a quicker ride in the commuter lane.  Isn't this just modern day hitchhiking?  People trusting people.

There are two recent instances where I've been inspired with people's trust.  Take Airbnb and now Lyft.  With Airbnb, people rent out their rooms, homes, couches, treehouses, or island to complete strangers.  Crazy, I know.  Now valued at 1.3 billion dollars, 300,000 people have rented out their homes on the site, and four million travelers have used it to find a place to stay in locations around the world.  People trusting people.  I like it.

And now Lyft.  I noticed some cars in SF with a silly stuffed pink mustache on the grill.  At first I thought I was seeing the same car around town but no, it's a new venture called Lyft.  Lyft connects people who want a ride and those who want to offer a ride.  Can't get a taxi? Use your cell phone to summons a Lyft driver.  These drivers are ordinary peeps that "want" to give you a lift.  According to co-founder, John Zimmer, "Lyft is all about being the friend with the car, treating that person as if they were a friend of yours". Lyft rides are supposed to be social activities and drivers are trained to greet riders with a "fist bump as a way of breaking the ice". Passengers are encouraged to sit in the front seat so they can make small talk.  People trusting people.

It saddens me when I think people are pulling in, encouraged to be suspicious of their neighbors, and generally fearing the "other."    But, I love that people are willing to trust others with their homes, cars, and lives.  People helping people. People trusting people.

Weak Feet
Leslie Kaminoff always has something to say about most things.  He jumped in on the conversation about yoga injuries.  I subscribe to his newsletters and am always interested in what he has to say.

I'm entirely with him on his comments about the feet and shoes. I thought it was about the unwielding shoe with too much padding, but he makes a good point in that it's the level, paved and predictable surfaces that are at the root of the problem.  Click on the video above.

The Real Enemy
When your mind is trained in self-discipline, even if you are surrounded by hostile forces, your peace of mind will hardly be disturbed. On the other hand, your mental peace and calm can easily be disrupted by your own negative thoughts and emotions. The real enemy is within, not outside.

Be Happy on Friday's
Instead of shots of tequila and fried artichoke hearts, spend your Friday happy hour moving and grooving at an
most-levels vinyasa flow class.

On Friday's from 4:30 - 6:00, we'll end each week with an energetic vinyasa flow class.  Through building heat from the inside, we'll strip out the stress hormones from the day.  A long rest at the end of class will reset our nervous system and prepare us for our weekend.

You'll be done at 6:00!!  That'll leave plenty of time for dinner with friends, a movie or a relaxing evening with your pooch.  Or, maybe a Chia filled Kombucha or that 100% agave margarita!

NOTE:  This Friday 8/16 class will meet at 5:30 - 7:00 due to teacher training.
Get Your Girlfriends Together

It's fun to get friends together.  Treat your friends to Yoga and Tea rather than Food and Booze.  Inviting friends to come together for a Gentle or Restorative Yoga class is a perfect way to enjoy each other's company and do something good for yourselves.  Many yoga parties end with tea or champagne and some munchies.  Your friends will thank you!

Please call on me if I can help you book a private yoga class or answer any questions.  I can be reached at cheryl@cherylthomas.com.
