New Research to Ponder
We want studies, hard data, research. Just the facts, ma'am. We have access to so many "scientific" studies most of which contradicts earlier reporting. You can find studies about the benefits of chocolate, the effects of violent video games on children and that eating fattening food makes you fat. Coffee is bad for you, oh no, now it's good for you, oh wait, now not good, but now ok (in moderation, of course). Same for eggs and echinashea and palm oil. Find it in Science Daily and Berkeley Wellness* and beyond.
I love the Health and Science section of the Tuesday New York Times and often find something yummy to share with you. If I don't make it to Copperfield's on Tuesday for the paper, I get the Health Update from the NYT in my inbox. This week there are just too many articles to share, especially when one of them is about yoga that effects thousands in Kenya and one is about looking younger. So, I'm going to offer them up and let your finger(s) do the clicking:
A Way to Prevent Aging Skin? Yes, It's Possible.
As you can imagine this caught my attention. It's about a new study that is the first to prove that people who use sunscreen daily can slow the development of wrinkles. Could it be? [I do not wear sunscreen. There, I've said it.] There's an article coming about this topic (again).
Men's Use of Testosterone on the Rise
People think women are vain? An increasing number of men are abusing the powerful hormone to boost their libidos and feel younger. The article states: "Men in their 40s represent the fastest-growing group of users. About half of men prescribed testosterone had a diagnosis of hypogonadism, and roughly 40 percent had erectile or sexual dysfunction. One third had a diagnosis of fatigue." Sexual dysfunction and fatigue? Do we really need a powerful hormone to regulate our multi-tasking, online poker-addicted, chronic sleep deprived society? I guess so.
Pressure Grows to Create Drugs for 'Superbugs'
Is the bacteria winning? The overuse of antibiotics in people and animals, often for conditions for which the drugs are ineffective or not needed is causing antibiotic resistant bacteria. These organisms have evolved and developed resistance faster than we can development new drugs and get them to the marketplace.
Yoga in Africa
An artist from Santa Monica traveled to Kenya to document the work of the Africa Yoga Project, a nonprofit organization that teaches and employs more than 70 local yoga teachers and conducts up to 300 free yoga classes for more than 5,000 people weekly in orphanages, prisons and other locales throughout the country. It's an inspiring interview about the power of a practice that spans language and cultures from rich white New Yorkers to prisons in Kenya.
Is It Better to Walk or Run?
I'm a big advocate of walking. That's it, nothing fancy, just walking. Here's a study that pits walking versus running for weight loss and the new studies found that if your goal is to lose weight, running wins. But in other measures of health, walking can be at least as valuable as running - and in some instances more so.
There you have it. You're on your own!
*Remember when it used to be Berkeley Wellness Letter and actually came in your mailbox?

Geoguessr
Extra time I know you don't have. Yet you could "repurpose" some of the time spent watching America's Next Muppet or Face Off or Games of Thrones with another time eater. This time it's interactive, somewhat educational and something you can do with others, your kids for instance. It's Geoguessr, a game where you are put someplace in the world via Google Maps and you have to try to figure out where you are. You get points for getting close. It's helps to navigate to a road sign, if you can read the language.

Puppy Dog Downward Dog can be a complicated and challenging pose, yet it appears in most yoga classes. Sometimes called Half Dog at the Wall or Wall Dog, exploring the pose at the wall can be a beneficial way to work on alignment without the press of gravity. Here's a video that offers two levels of Puppy Dog. |
Yoga for Healthy Aging There's a lot of information on this blog from some experienced yogis, many with Phd after their names, including Baxter Bell andTimothy McCall. It's a site to bookmark and peruse often. Lots of great information. There's audio for relaxation and a recording of yoga nidra. What a great resource, I say!. The Smallest Act
The bodhisattva ideal begins with the smallest acts motivated by concern for others. This feeling, this wish to be more kind and helpful, is the beginning of the bodhisattva path itself, and the treading of this path-for most of us, for most of our practice-lives-will mainly consist of small acts of kindness and concern, brief moments of putting others before ourselves.

Be Happy on Friday's
Instead of shots of tequila and fried artichoke hearts, spend your Friday happy hour moving and grooving at an most-levels vinyasa flow class.
On Friday's from 4:30 - 6:00, we'll end each week with an energetic vinyasa flow class. Through building heat from the inside, we'll strip out the stress hormones from the day. A long rest at the end of class will reset our nervous system and prepare us for our weekend.
You'll be done at 6:00!! That'll leave plenty of time for dinner with friends, a movie or a relaxing evening with your pooch. Or, maybe a Chia filled Kombucha or that 100% agave margarita!
NOTE: This class meets this Friday from 5:30 - 7:00 due to teacher training. Check my calendar or Westside's.

Get Your Girlfriends Together

It's fun to get friends together. Treat your friends to Yoga and Tea rather than Food and Booze. Inviting friends to come together for a Gentle or Restorative Yoga class is a perfect way to enjoy each other's company and do something good for yourselves. Many yoga parties end with tea or champagne and some munchies. Your friends will thank you!
Please call on me if I can help you book a private yoga class or answer any questions. I can be reached at cheryl@cherylthomas.com.
