Loneliness
One is the loneliest number. Who did that song? Ah, yes, Three Dog Night, however, I like the slow, sad remake by Amiee Mann, which appeared in the fabulous movie, Magnolia. But, I digress. The song goes on to suggest that two can be as bad as one. Are you humming it in your head yet?
The New Republic's recent article by Judith Schulevitz, The Lethality of Loneliness: We now know how it can ravage our body and brain, reports on the science behind loneliness. Surprisingly, there are lots of lonely people out there--30% of the population says they don't feel close to others. So, what actually is loneliness? It's not about being alone, because there are plenty of us that would LOVE to spend some time alone, some "me" time. But, the other loneliness is the loneliness that makes you feel sad and separate and alone with no one that you feel close to. It's not about how much time you spend with others, as you can feel lonely in a crowded room. Even married couples can feel lonely. Loneliness varies with age. It's pervasive among the very old and the not-so-old. A survey by AARP in 2010 found that slightly more than one in three adults over 45 reported being chronically lonely. That's chronically lonely, like over a long period of time, not just the short-term lonely, when there's been a breakup or a move. And with the rise in the baby-boomer generation, the number is going to blossom. Not only is being lonely about how you feel, but research has found that it take a toll on the physical body. It causes a stress response, just like the fight/flight hit on the nervous system, like traumatic stress. Over time this affects the immune system via the inflammation response. They have proven that long-lasting loneliness not only makes you sick but can kill you. According to the article, "Emotional isolation is ranked as high a risk factor for mortality as smoking. A partial list of the physical diseases thought to be caused or exacerbated by loneliness would include Alzheimer's, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, neurodegenerative diseases, and even cancer-tumors can metastasize faster in lonely people." Are some people prone to loneliness? Some interesting research has shown yes, that you can be predisposed you to loneliness. According to an article in Psychology Today, "chronic loneliness makes us increasingly sensitive to, and on the lookout for, rejection and hostility. In ambiguous social situations, lonely people immediately think the worst. For instance, if coworker Bob seems more quiet and distant than usual lately, a lonely person is likely to assume that he's done something to offend Bob, or that Bob is intentionally giving him the cold shoulder." What to do? Public and health policies can help protect our young (this is complicated by the widening divide between the haves and have-nots). Avoiding loneliness and isolation in children can lead to healthier and happier future adults. Many children are being raised with little contact with the parents, coming home to an empty house. It's been reported, "As nearly half of all marriages continue to end in divorce . . . childhood has become a more solitary and chaotic experience. Single mothers don't have a lot of time to spend with their children". Public awareness, like the New Republic article, can educate people on health risks and ways to break out of loneliness. You can resolve the deleterious effect of loneliness by becoming unlonely by letting the body can heal itself by positive social experiences. The science concurs, the body can be healed by love. According to the article, "We're talking about changes in the brain that can be seen, and then measured." So, if you perceive yourself as lonely or know someone who might be, just like with depression, you need to be pro-active by seeking out positive social experiences. This can include improving your social skills, increasing the opportunities for social interaction, and seeking support.

Aren't we lucky! Coming to Alive Yoga in Sebastopol is revered instructor, Tony Briggs. Alive Yoga is Liz Levy's studio a bit south of town in the center by Starbucks. He'll be starting June 10 on Mondays from 9:30 - 11:00.
Pinch me. Not only do we have Mr. Briggs in town, but the much loved, Anne O'Brien, is starting 2 classes at Westside Yoga Studio in Sebastool. Find her there on Wednesdays starting June 19, at 9:15 and 11:00.
Jenay Martin, talented owner of Anjenaya Yoga Studio and creator of The Lotus Feed in Occidental is bringing well-known instructor, Sianna Sherman, to Taylor Made Farm for a farm to table brunch on Sunday, June 23! This is a perfect opportunity to do some great yoga on the yoga deck, enjoy a yummy meal and hang out with your yogi friends. More info and registration here. It's on my calendar.
Searching for an experienced Anusara-trained yoga teacher? There aren't many in our neck of the woods. Anne Austin and I took a class this morning at Liz Levy's sweet studio, Alive Yoga. Coffee enhanced, Mark Lundbeck, taught a challenging and informative class with loads of personal attention to Ann and me. He offered some very helpful advice on the shoulder girdle using his own personal experience blended with Anusara's Priniciples of Alignment. Check his schedule here.
The new community based movement studio, Move2Change is having its grand opening on June 8 from noon to dusk. Their FB page says there'sll be free classes, demonstrations, massage, performances, kids activities, food and beverages. Starting Monday, June 3, Sebastopol's loved Ashtangi, Ann Austin, brings her creative and fun teaching on M, T and F at 9 and W at 11. More news when their website is live. It'll be at The Barlow in Sebastopol in the previous Sebastopol Center for the Arts location.
Our one-and-only, Iris Lambert, with her brand of Irie Yoga, and her talented daughter, Glory, are leading a retreat to the Xinalani Resort (Mexico) in December. Looks amazing. More info here.
A getaway closer to home, Jeanie Gartin, is offering a Yoga Camping Retreat on June 21st -23rd at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. Hiking, eating organic gourmet meals will be part of the offering along with a specially designed yoga workshops for the retreat (one will be under the full moon and stars). How fun, Jeanie! Emotions and Back Pain
It's been suggested that our back pain has an emotional component. According to breathing specialist, Leslie Kaminoff,

 Puppy Dog Downward Dog can be a complicated and challenging pose, yet it appears in most yoga classes. Sometimes called Half Dog at the Wall or Wall Dog, exploring the pose at the wall can be a beneficial way to work on alignment without the press of gravity.  Training the Brain for Compassion We can all be kinder and gentler and approach the world with more compassion. We know it, but for many of us, it does not come naturally given our "baggage". Science Daily reports on a study that suggests that the brain can be trained in compassion. The researcher said:
"It's kind of like weight training, . . . Using this systematic approach, we found that people can actually build up their compassion 'muscle' and respond to others' suffering with care and a desire to help."

Be Happy on Friday's
Instead of shots of tequila and fried artichoke hearts, spend your Friday happy hour moving and grooving at an most-levels vinyasa flow class.
On Friday's from 4:30 - 6:00, we'll end each week with an energetic vinyasa flow class. Through building heat from the inside, we'll strip out the stress hormones from the day. A long rest at the end of class will reset our nervous system and prepare us for our weekend.
You'll be done at 6:00!! That'll leave plenty of time for dinner with friends, a movie or a relaxing evening with your pooch. Or, maybe a Chia filled Kombucha or that 100% agave margarita!
NOTE: This class meets from 5:30 - 7:00 once a month due to teacher training. Check my calendar or Westside's.

Get Your Girlfriends Together

It's fun to get friends together. Treat your friends to Yoga and Tea rather than Food and Booze. Inviting friends to come together for a Gentle or Restorative Yoga class is a perfect way to enjoy each other's company and do something good for yourselves. Many yoga parties end with tea or champagne and some munchies. Your friends will thank you!
