Comfort Zone Widening Your Comfort Zone

Remember when a bed was a bed.  There were no sleep "systems", belly pillows, memory foam toppers, "European" shams, 1000 thread count, Egyptian cotton, organic sheets and unless your mattress was on the floor, you had a box spring.  You probably had a blanket and a bed spread and unless you lived in Zurich, there was no down in sight. No "550 fill power".  You slept just fine (I hope).  Not any more. You and your bedmate can have separate "sleep numbers" with the  SLEEP NUMBERŪ Innovation Series Limited Edition that "embraces you in soothing luxury with layers of support that conform to your body and cradle every curve for sleep that leaves you rested and renewed".  Wow. You'd think we'd be sleeping like babies(1).

Everyone wants to be happy and comfortable.  But, our Western ways have afforded us comfort in areas we didn't even know we needed it.  I can have unlimited comfort (for a fee), so dang it, I deserve it.  Aren't the advertisers right?   The result:  More discomfort.  Our range of comfort, I'm afraid, is getting narrower and narrower.    Ethan Nichtern(2)  gives the example of cars that have "quad comfort zones".   You can be comfortable riding shotgun at 69 degrees while your backseat buddy is at 71.  Your comfort level is now 69 and now you notice the "discomfort" when you get to 70 or 71 or 72.  Instead of having more comfort, we feel more discomfort as the temperature is out of our "range".

I'm not suggesting we run away from comfort. Notice what you like, what feels good.  But, expand your comfort, rather than rejecting what is uncomfortable, according to Mr. Nichtern.  He goes on to suggest that we want to increase our zone by getting comfortable in a wider (not more narrow) variety of circumstances.   The "insight is if you keep trying to run away from pain or find some existence that's pain free, you're going to fail.  You are going to make your comfort zone more and more narrow."

Notice areas in your life where you can widen your zone.  Maybe this isn't physical comfort, but comfort with your experiences and interactions.  Does the internet/text/email/facebook allow you to avoid face-to-face situations. Instead of having a difficult discussion (or any discussion) with a real person, is it now your default to communicate with via text?   Does the TV and another Racer 5 allow you an "out" for dealing with uncomfortable situations?

I'm noticing my comfort zone right now.  What'll I do?  I'm going to put the corn bag in the microwave(3), turn up the heat, put on warm socks, and warm up my tea!  Are you comfortable?

(1) According to www.sleepmed.md, 20-40% of all adults have insomnia in the course of any year, 1 out of 3 people have insomnia at some point in their lives, over 70 million Americans suffer from disorders of sleep and wakefulness and of those, 60% have a chronic disorder

(2) Founder of the awesome Interdependence Project (www.theidproject.org).  Listen to podcast dated 1/12/11 on The Basics of Working with Your Mind.  You can find it on iTunes, of course.

(3) My BBF, we'll call her Barb, makes fabric bags filled corn that you can heat in the microwave.  They stay warm forever.  Her bags are the only reason I own a microwave!

Teacher Training

Advanced Studies - Teacher Training Program

If you've ever considered taking a Yoga Teacher Training program, the stars have just aligned for you. Yoga by by Design in Petaluma with the expert guidance of local legend, Tony Briggs, is holding a teacher training beginning in January 2013.

Do you wonder about the differences between teacher training programs?  Good, you should.  They are not all created equal.  This program has teachers who I would (and do) seek out to train with "individually".  So, a training that includes all of them is stellar. These are senior, seasoned, respected, local and international teachers.  Who?  Tony Briggs, Anne O'Brien, Richard Rosen, Ann Dyer, Ulrika Engman and more!  And, I have the great opportunity to be included with this impressive group.  I have been asked to present the Restorative Yoga module.

Maybe you don't want to teach, but want to extend your knowledge of the practice and learn more about the philosophy, anatomy and grounding in the principles of yoga. This is the perfect opportunity.

I know, life if busy and funds are short.  They've made it easy and affordable. Classes will be on Friday evenings and Saturday and Sunday afternoons for 4 months.  Want more info?  Of course you do.  Contact Yoga by Design at 707-762-7678, email is postwellnessbydesign@gmail.com, website is www.postwellnessbydesign.com (click on the Advanced Teacher's Training link on the left hand side, or just click here.  Of course you can go to Tony Briggs's site at www.tonybriggsyoga.com or you can ask me any questions at cheryl@cherylthomas.com.

Be Happy on Friday's
Instead of shots of tequila and fried artichoke hearts, spend your Friday happy hour moving and grooving at an all-levels vinyasa flow class.

I am honored and excited to be offered another class at Westside Yoga Studio.   On Friday's from 4:30 - 6:00, we'll end each week with an energetic vinyasa flow class.  Through building heat from the inside, we'll strip out the stress hormones from the day.  A long rest at the end of class will reset our nervous system and prepare us for our weekend.

You'll be done at 6:00!!  That'll leave plenty of time for dinner with friends, a movie or a relaxing evening with your pooch.  Or, maybe a Chia filled Kombucha or that 100% agave margarita!

NOTE-  (About) Once a month thereafter, this class will meet from 5:30 - 7:00 due to scheduled teacher training.  Please see either my schedule or Westside's site.

Restorative Yoga
I love the response of students to their first or second or hundredth restorative yoga experience.  It's the moment when their nervous system shifts from "yikes!" to "ahhhhhh."  They leave with relaxed shoulders and brightened attitude.

It's easy to forget that the body knows exactly what to do.  The relaxation response is a built in function of our amazing central nervous system.  We just have to let relaxation happen.  I know, it seems impossible sometimes. Thus, the popularity of restorative yoga where we learn to put the body in positions and let it do it's thing.

Get Your Girlfriends Together

It's fun to get friends together.  Treat your friends to Yoga and Tea rather than Food and Booze.  Inviting friends to come together for a Gentle or Restorative Yoga class is a perfect way to enjoy each other's company and do something good for yourselves.  Many yoga parties end with tea or champagne and some munchies.  Your friends will thank you!

Please call on me if I can help you book a private yoga class or answer any questions.  I can be reached at cheryl@cherylthomas.com.
