Students seek global classroom through microfinance

by Lauren Fisher '15

Students in Michelle Semancik's AP Government classes are coming to know the true meaning of service in a global community. With the help of microfinance organization Kiva, they have been able to use their personal funds to help finance small businesses and entrepreneurs across the world, all from the comfort of their Mt. Washington classroom.

Over the 2013 summer vacation, juniors at McNicholas High School were required to read The International Bank of Bobthat followed freelance journalist Bob Harris on a journey around the world, using witty prose to inform readers about the up-and-coming microfinance industry. Since then, both of Semancik's government classes have pooled their money together and made loans to three individuals in Togo, Tajikistan, and Zimbabwe.

"I'm hopeful that students will find a new way to help people in poverty improve their situations and basically help people help themselves," Semancik said. "In terms of long term solutions to poverty, charity is not always the best way to help people; money can run out and leave people just as destitute as they were before."  Read more.

Thank you from the after prom committee chair

"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."

Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

There are so many people who "care a whole awful lot" and need to be thanked, I do not even know where to begin. I guess the first place to start is to thank the countless volunteers who spent all weekend setting up, working, and finally cleaning up after for this event. Without you, this would never have been possible! I am sure I will miss someone, but there are some volunteers that need a special shout out!

In particular, I would like to thank those people who had the courage and energy to step up to chair a room, area or task, people like Susan Kamphaus, Gwen Farwick, Cindy Gardner, Kim Engel, Janet Staderman, Mary Lisa Lind, Beth Farr, Diane Gumbert, Tracey Garrison, Carol Niehaus, Mary St. Charles, Jenny Wagner, Jeanne Daly, Laura Wilson, Susy Hisch, and Holly Hehemann. John and Martha Sarra served an array of carnival food, everything from circus peanuts to tacos, chicken and ice balls, just to name a few, running around for hours before the event, picking up food to serve our hungry party goers. Rob and Therese Hazzard took over Starbuck's this year, a popular beverage that seems to have become an After Prom mainstay. A big thank you to Tim Monahan, Betty Stelter, Jean Gelvin, Mike Woodruff, and Mike Orlando who helped to connect us to the inner workings of McNicholas High School through various tasks. A special thanks to Dan Rosenbaum, Mary Beth Sandmann, Bill Losekamp, and Julie Dill who gave up a huge chunk of their weekend to be with our kids, showing them through action how much they truly care. PTSA President Gloria Ann Castleman did anything possible to find detours to any roadblocks we encountered. Marilyn Kump kept people on task and organized, and kept all of the dollars and "sense" straight!

But the real genius was Kim Simmons. She spent countless hours in the PTSA closet, trying to organize and find current decorations we could use and reuse to save money, and making sure area chairs had everything they needed to do the job they volunteered to do. From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much!
