Let the Living Water Flow!

This has been such a rich theme for Friends in the Section of the Américas. Here in the office, we hear it every day, yet I keep finding new meanings in the metaphor of living water. Without the Living Water, our souls and our communities run dry. We know we need clean water to survive, and since the World Conference in April 2012, the world has seen both devastating drought and floods.

In 2014, Friends in the Americas will again gather to consider how the Holy Spirit is working through us and among us, in El Salvador, California, Bolivia and North Carolina. How will the Living Water flow through us? And how will we carry it home with us?

As Noah Baker Merrill said back in Kabarak, "Like the rivers of my home, if we are inwardly changed in our time together, the nature of our witness, the testimony of our outward lives, will be different and all we meet will know it, too." Let us clear the channels to let our lives flow, serving God's purposes together.

Ashley Wilcox coming to High Point consultation
Registration for the La Paz, Bolivia and High Point, NC events will be coming soon.

The consultations are planned with the expectation that Friends will learn new skills from one another to sustain and grow our meetings; to affirm our mutual Quaker identity; to consider the future of Friends as a whole in the coming years; and to commit to practices to foster a thriving Religious Society of Friends.
Student leaders to guide workshops on Quakerism in the 21st Century in US consultations
Student representatives from Quaker colleges will guide interactive discussions on what Quaker leadership might look like in years to come at our two US consultations next spring, in Sacramento, CA and High Point, NC.

Mark and Tim Almquist, sibling students at George Fox University, will lead the workshop "Quaker leadership for the 21st Century" in Sacramento in March. They will share their experiences of being in positions of leadership in the Friends church as young people, touching on leadership development, holistic leadership, humility, and submission to the way of Christ's dynamic leadership.  The workshop hopes for everyone's active participation in true discernment and for all participants to constructively share leadership experiences, ideas and visions.

At the High Point, NC consultation, Keenan Lorenzato of Guilford College's Quaker Leadership Scholars Program will invite workshop participants into an interactive exploration on leadership, integrating concerns about the fast pace of technology vs. patience and waiting on the Spirit; an appropriate spirit-led relationship with technology, engagement and accessibility; and stewardship for the environment and each other. He'll also ask participants to explore attitudes towards teaching each other, how we can teach across age lines, and our willingness to receive knowledge from one another.

Philippines disaster impacts Quaker community
The Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC) World Office has launched an appeal for funds in the wake of the earthquake and typhoon that have struck the Philippines in recent days. The epicentre of the earthquake was on the island of Bohol where there is a small group of unprogrammed Quakers.  The typhoon has made their recovery even more difficult.  Many members of the Friends Evangelical Yearly Meeting, which is affiliated with Evangelical Friends Church-Eastern Region, live in the direct path of Typhoon Haiyan.
