Ag student sells homegrown honey

Daniel Williams, a Poplar Bluff High School freshman, has begun helping at his family's honey business, collecting honey, breeding bees and building bee boxes as part of his supervised agriculture experience project.

The SAE is a component of the agriculture classroom, under the instruction of Kathryn Clark, through which students can advance their career goals by keeping a record book of work they complete and money they spend.

"Basically I am trying to help students learn by doing," explained Clark, agriculture education teacher. "It's always exciting when the light bulb clicks and they realize how much they spend to live in a month."

Daniel, who has also started his own hive at home, is raising money to purchase a vehicle when he turns 16, he said. His long-term goal is to go to veterinarian school.

Other student agriculture related projects under way or in planning stages include selling eggs from a chicken coop, raising bunnies to sell, recording rodeo winnings, helping with a family garden, volunteering at the farmer's market, as well as maintaining actual jobs.

Fifth Grader Labryan McDonald discussed how be would like to become a football player for the Chicago Bears, but his back-up plan is to go into law enforcement.
