School Board Recognition Week observed

The Poplar Bluff R-I School District would like to sincerely thank our Board of Education for their dedicated service and countless hours without compensation devoted to the betterment of our students.

School Board Recognition Week runs until Saturday, Feb. 1, as proclaimed by Gov. Jay Nixon. All Missouri citizens are asked to recognize the important contributions of these men and women.

During the Municipal Election on Tuesday, April 8, five candidates will vie for three seats on the school board. Incumbents Alana Robertson and Steve Sells are seeking reelection, while newcomers Cindy Boyers, John Scott and Jim Ward have also filed. Dr. Matt Riffle, who is completing his second three-year term, will not run again.

K-Center balloon discovered in Kentucky

A balloon released by a student of the Kindergarten Center traveled over 350 miles northeast to Frankfort, Ky.

Nathan Wells [below] discovered the remains of the balloon while crossing the parking lot of one of the warehouses he maintains for Tierney Storage in the Capitol city of Kentucky. Wells initially thought the long red string and deflated balloon was trash, until he noticed the attached note, which listed the Kindergarten Center address and teacher Tonya Hill's name [above].

"The kids were very excited about one of their balloons being found," Hill reported. "I showed them on the map where the balloon was found."

Earlier this month, Wells' fiancée Delena Way-McGaughey posted a photo of the discovery on the Poplar Bluff Schools Facebook page.

The kindergartners released the balloons during Red Ribbon Week at the end of October.
