Charlie Classics spring winners
Sponsored by U.S. Bank, the Designing Women Foundation awarded $1,450 to the Charlie Classics Reading Challenge spring winners of Poplar Bluff Junior and Senior High earlier this month.
At PBJHS, eighth grader Ty Flanagan took first place for reading 27 books, winning a $150 Visa bankcard. Katelin Lipsey of the eighth grade came in second with 18 books, winning $100. The third place $50 winner was seventh grader Sam Traxel with 15 books. Communication Arts instructor Joyce Whitworth was named the winning teacher for her encouragement, earning $100. The contest ran from the beginning of the year to April 30.
At PBHS, freshman Christian Cmehil-Warn placed first with 26 books, winning $300. The second place winner was Nikkia Hickman, reading 25 books and bringing home $150. Sophomore Ben Soeter won $300, having read a total of 28 books. And Shannon Woods, a junior, won $300 for reading 11 books. There were no seniors who completed the 10-book minimum from the teacher-approved classic literature list. The challenge for high schoolers went from Sept. 1-April 30.

Honor Choir opens for Cardinals
The Poplar Bluff 5th & 6th Grade Center Honor Choir-under the director of music teacher Kristy Weaver-sang "God Bless America" prior to the St. Louis Cardinals game on Thursday, May 16, at Busch Stadium, which has become an annual tradition for students.

Junior Beta Club supports depot steps
On Wednesday, May 15, the Poplar Bluff Junior Beta Club donated $730 to the Poplar Bluff Historic Depot Restoration Corporation to go toward the grand staircase restoration.
The Depot Steps Committee has less than $17,000 left to raise in matching funds by Saturday, June 1, in order to receive the $250,000 transportation enhancement grant approved by the Missouri Department of Transportation. Constructed in 1910, the Depot-located at the south end of Main Street in downtown Poplar Bluff-is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Sixth graders leave their mark on school
A total of 350 upperclassmen of Deana Ward's art class at the 5th & 6th Grade Center recently created a ceramic tile mural on the exterior of the school building representing "synergy," the sixth habit under The Leader in Me initiative, which was employed there this past school year.

DAR honors Campbell for education career
Earlier this month retiring communication arts teacher Kay Campbell of Poplar Bluff High School received statewide recognition from the Missouri State Society Daughters of the American Revolution for a career promoting literacy in Southeast Missouri.
The certificate of recognition, signed by DAR State Literacy Promotion Chairwoman Janean Faux, was awarded to the longtime educator for "developing curriculum, ensuring library access and designing programs of study to encourage high school students in their progression of literacy skills."

Track and Field finishes dominant season
Poplar Bluff Junior High School Track and Field finished the school year as the 2013 Southeast Missouri Conference champions. Through the course of the season, the boys team won first place at every track meet, and the girls took first in every meet with the exception for the first one, in which they placed second against East Prairie.

Summer School will run from Tuesday, May 28 to Monday, June 24.
Gator Bowl fundraisers
The Poplar Bluff Cheerleaders will put on a yard sale Friday and Saturday, May 31-June 1, at Fox Orthodontic Center on 1300 N. Westwood Bldvd.
The cheerleaders will hold a Pancake Breakfast from 7:30-10 a.m. Saturday, June 8, at The Bread Co. The cost is $5.
Both of the fundraisers will help finance the cheerleaders' upcoming New Year's Day performance at Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla.
Show Me Whatcha Got
The annual Show Me Whatcha Got talent show finale, featuring some students from Poplar Bluff Schools, is slated to take place from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at the Three Rivers College Tinnin Fine Arts Center.

Long-Range Planning
Long-range planning meetings for the Citizen's Advisory Committee will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 4 and 11, plus July 9 and 30, at the 5th & 6th Grade Center.
