Registration open for exclusive government crash course

 

             

Poplar Bluff High School senior Alexa Atkinson discusses with 28 interested juniors on Thursday, Jan. 24, in the cafeteria her experience last year attending Missouri Girls State. Natalie Riley [right] is the director of MGS, which is offering up to six female students the opportunity to spend a week in June of intense government study at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.

 

Bettie Rusher, the Missouri Boys State district chairwoman, spoke with 25 interested male high school juniors about the exclusive opportunity earlier in the day. Last school year, eight PBHS students were able to participate.

School officials participate in chamber banquet

 

  

 

Superintendent Chris Hon [top photo], the outgoing chairman of the Greater Poplar Bluff Area Chamber of Commerce board, talked about how the school district is working hard to meet the growth of our community, before welcoming his successor Matt Hillis, Saturday, Jan. 26, during the 75th annual chamber banquet.

PBHS students honored in Arkansas for artwork

 

            

Poplar Bluff High School students [from left] Tina Slayton, Kelsey Dunn and Cheyenne Brown recently won awards during the annual student art exhibition at the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum in Piggott, Ark., for their sketches created in art teacher Christina Swint's class. The students' artwork was also displayed for a month at the Thea Foundation Gallery in North Little Rock. Not pictured is Alex Dalton, who received an honorable mention.

District goes digital with classroom curriculums

 

            

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 22-23, at Central Office, [from left] Amanda Summers, Debbie Harper and Shelly Johnson of the Poplar Bluff Kindergarten Center were among a group of about 50 R-I teachers who attended a computer software workshop led by CurriculumLoft Education Specialist Donna Fairhurst of Ashland, Ohio. The new software will allow faculty to store and share grade level curriculums electronically, as the school district moves forward with its one-to-one laptop digital conversion.

Fifth graders take on civic project

 

             

Poplar Bluff 5th & 6th Grade Center students of Amy McNab's class recently held a successful donation drive that generated a heap of care supplies for the Animal Welfare Alliance of Southeast Missouri to provide to pets in need of forever homes at the Poplar Bluff Animal Shelter

School board honored for dedicated service

 

              

In observance of School Board Recognition Week, as proclaimed by Gov. Jay Nixon, Superintendent Chris Hon presented the school board with certificates during the January board meeting for the vital role these public officials play in the education of our students. 100th Day Celebration

Wednesday, Jan. 30, marks the 100th day this school year. In celebration, activities are being planned at some of the schools in the district.

 

Homecoming

The PBHS Homecoming is slated for Friday, Feb. 1, against Sikeston with the theme: Let's watch the Mules beat the Bulldogs.

 

Polar Plunge

PBHS Student Council will participate for the first time in the annual Polar Plunge at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, in Lake Boutin at Jackson. All proceeds benefit Special Olympics Missouri.

 

Mr. Snowman

Organized by PBHS StuCo, Mr. Snowman-a male beauty pageant-is slated to take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, in the Kay Porter Theater. Tickets go on sale the Monday prior to the annual event.

 

Spelling Bee

Live on the air at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, Fox Radio Network will host a Spelling Bee Championship, featuring second and third grade finalists from our elementary schools.

 

Feb Board Meeting

The next school board meeting will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in the Central Office. The monthly meeting is open to the public.

The premiere edition of our district magazine is coming this spring!

On Monday, Jan. 21, KFVS12 ran a press release on its website about our first high school student who completed the College Now program, a wonderful partnership with Three Rivers College.  

 

On Wednesday, Jan. 23, KFVS12 ran a photo release on its website about School Board Recognition Week.

 

On Thursday, Jan. 24, Kait8 ran the photo release honoring our school board.

 

On Friday, Jan. 25, KFVS12 aired a news segment about student Adrienne Burfield, who earned her associate degree before her high school diploma. Check out our photo album entitled 'Press' for some behind-the-scenes action from the filming.

 

Kait8 ran a photo release about a group of fifth graders who made a generous donation to the Poplar Bluff Animal Shelter.

 

On Sunday, Jan. 27, KFVS12 ran a release on its website about an opportunity for our high school juniors to attend Missouri Boys or Girls State for a week this summer.
