Dear Neighbor,
In February of 2015, #GROW47 joined forces with neighboring aldermen and neighborhood schools to launch #GROWCommunity. The expanded effort will cover three wards (40, 44, and 47) -- with Ald. Pat O'Connor (40) and Ald. Tom Tunney (44). The goal is to organize our communities around Lake View and Amundsen High Schools. Schools from all three wards feed into Lake View and Amundsen and by joining forces, we will be able to pool resources and political capital to give families in our communities what they seek out in the suburbs - a community K-12 experience.
In April of 2015, #GROWCommunity began assembling a task force chaired by aldermen (40, 44, 47), Mayor Emanuel, Principal Scott Grens, and Principal Anna Pavichevich. The task force is comprised of the chairs, parents, teachers and community leaders. And today, I am pleased to announce that my political action committee (PAC), Friends of Ameya Pawar, contributed $10k ($5k to Lake View High School and $5k to Amundsen High School) to seed #GROWCommunity programs and activities. My PAC previously contributed $2500 towards the creation of a Lake View/Amundsen rowing team. And I will continue to allocate PAC funds towards #GROWCommunity efforts over the next four years. In addition, I will continue to partner with task force members to identify grants, secure grants, and raise other funds to propel #GROWCommunity efforts.
Over the next four years, #GROWCommunity do the following:
- Organize all Lake View and Amundsen feeder schools to develop a pipeline to the neighborhood high schools.
- Prioritize and direct TIF funds for capital improvements to Amundsen and Lake View High Schools
- Advocate for greater equity between selective enrollment high schools and neighborhood high schools
- Ensure ALL learners in our communities have access to top-notch neighborhood high schools
- Advocate for additional resources for Amundsen and Lake View from Chicago Public Schools and the State of Illinois
- Change the dialogue around neighborhood schools - remember performance follows perception!

School Supply Drive
Our annual 47th Ward School Supply Drive, in partnership with Ravenswood Community Services, Lincoln Square Friendship Center, and the Common Pantry, is currently underway and runs until August 20th. Since 2011, we've collected tons of school supplies including backpacks, notebooks, pens, pencils and calculators for students and families in our community. Last year we collected more supplies than ever before and are excited about what the community can accomplish this year. More info is on the flyer below. Water Main Replacement - Damen from Montrose to Irving Park
Contractors working with the Department of Water Management will begin replacing the water mains from 1891 under Damen Avenue between Montrose and Irving Park, Cullom Avenue from Damen to Lincoln, and Pensacola Avenue from Damen to Lincoln on Monday, August 10th. During the first days of the project, parking will be restricted on Damen, Cullom and Pensacola. Once the streets have been prepared for the new mains, parking restrictions will be staged.
Crews will be out digging test holes and doing work in limited scope beginning tomorrow, August 7th. Parking is restricted on the affected street(s) Monday through Friday from 7am to 4pm. Traffic will flow on Damen Avenue during this work and bus service will be uninterrupted. We will continue to update you via the 'Infrastructure Update' section of the newsletter. Restoration of the affected portions of the street is scheduled to take place before the winter.

Safe Cycling Classes
Are you interested in the fun and convenience of bicycling but feel nervous about getting out on 2-wheels? Consider taking the Save Cycling Class, a 3-hour introduction to the basics of riding a bike safely in traffic, offered by the Active Transportation Alliance. Covering the rules of the road for cyclists, handling intersections, commuting tips/tricks, as well as picking out the right bike and basic maintenance, you will spend 1/5 hour in the classroom & 1.5 hours in a practice area before practicing on low-traffic streets. Rain, Rain - Don't Go Away!
How fortunate are we that there is no drought in the Midwest? Lake Michigan is up to its normal level.
However, I'm certain you've noticed that when it rains, it really, really rains! Sometime water sits in the streets for a day or so - which is on purpose to keep the water out of our basements. Some peoples' basements still flood and others alleys and yards flood.
What has changed to make this happen? What can we do about it?
There are many reasons why we're being inundated with water in our streets. One reason is climate-change; another contributing factor is the loss of permeable surfaces around our neighborhood.
What can you do? There are many free and easy ways you can make a difference:
- Keep your street gutters and sewer covers cleaned off.
- Don't do laundry or run the dishwasher when it's raining
- Disconnect your downspouts. What will happen to the water if you disconnect the downspouts?
- You can catch water in a rain-barrel, remove grass from your lawn, parkway and corners, plant native plants, &/or create a rain garden.
Mother Nature is going to do what she does. Fewer permeable surfaces are inevitable. Yes, you can make rain-storms a non-issue. These are easy ways to make a difference. Looking for more information, inspiration or plants? Call or email Dara@chicago47.org.

You may have to move your plants so they won't be destroyed or disappear. This is the perfect time to sweep or rake you curb gutters and sewers. Clean up all of the debris that the rain washed down. Keep those drains clear. Please be sure to report any drain that does not clear within 4 hours of rainfall to the 47th Ward Office or 311. Please bring in your old batteries for recycling. Keep them out of the landfill. Don't have a use for your old cell phones? Drop them off at the alderman's office. We collect year round for Cell Phones for Soldiers. Lawrence Avenue Streetscape
- LANDSCAPING UPDATE: Landscaping work is currently being performed along the entire project corridor, so please pay close attention to parking restriction signs. The trash and weeds were removed from the planter areas and new topsoil has been added. Plantings will begin on Monday, 8/10 and will be installed along the entire project (Western to Clark) by Friday, 8/15. Sodding was completed on 7/22 and the contractor will be providing supplemental waterings. Dead and damaged trees, which are under warranty, will also be replaced along the corridor.
- CONCRETE UPDATE: There have been some issues with sidewalks and curbs/gutters spalling and the contractor will be removing and replacing a number of sections along the corridor. We will provide additional information on replacement timelines when they become available. This additional concrete work is expected to be completed by the end of August, but this timeline may need to be extended.
- PUNCH LIST ITEMS UPDATE: The stamped asphalt project to connect Claremont Plaza to Giddings Plaza will be completed by mid-August. The majority of the stamped asphalt was recently installed, but a short stretch remains near Giddings Plaza at the southern end of the project. Work on a new fence to shield the dumpsters in Claremont Plaza is expected to start in mid-August and be erected by the end of August. New traffic signals at Damen were recently installed and timings have been adjusted. Gateway identifier poles and bike arcs have been installed and neighborhood identifier poles and banner arms are in place. New benches and trash cans were also installed along the corridor. New bike symbols were completed on 7/22 and the remaining punch list items are scheduled to be addressed by the end of August.
As always, pay close attention to parking restrictions. Ravenswood Metra Station - The new station opened in early May (west side, for outbound trains)!
- Metra Phase II: Design and engineering work is currently being performed for improvements to the east side of the tracks and will be put out to bid once complete. Construction of the 11 new bridges and new station (east side, for inbound trains) is expected to start in spring 2016 will last approximately 18 months. Work on the east side will move faster than on the west side since the track is currently in place there and extensive retaining wall work is not necessary. The middle track will also be removed as part of this project.
Water Main Replacement Damen from Irving Park to Montrose, Cullom from Lincoln to Damen and Pensacola from Lincoln to Damen Contractors working with the Department of Water Management will begin replacing the water mains from 1891 under Damen from Irving Park to Montrose, Cullom from Lincoln to Damen and Pensacola from Lincoln to Damen beginning Monday, August 10th on Damen Avenue. No parking will be necessary from 7am to 4pm. After the project is sawcut and milled, no parking will be staged to the greatest extent possible. Water Main Replacement Oakley from Addison to Cornelia, Claremont from Addison to School, and Roscoe from Western to Leavitt Crews from the Department of Water Management will be replacing the water main from 1889 under Oakley from Addison to Cornelia, Claremont from Addison to School and Roscoe from Western to Leavitt soon. No parking will be necessary from 7am to 4pm. After the project is sawcut and milled, no parking will be staged to the greatest extent possible. Water Main Replacement for Patterson from Damen to Lincoln Contractors working with the Dept. of Water Management are replacing the water main from 1896 under Patterson from Damen to Lincoln. The contractor is working on service transfers. For more information on this project, please click here. Water Main Replacement for: Leavitt (Sunnyside to Lawrence), Giddings (Lincoln to Leavitt), Leland (Lincoln to Leavitt), Eastwood (Lincoln to Leavitt), and Wilson (Lincoln to Hamilton) Contractors working with the Dept. of Water Management are replacing the water mains from 1890 under the streets listed above. Concrete has been poured in the trenches on every street except Eastwood. No parking is in effect, where needed, from 7am to 4pm M-F. Parking restrictions will remain on Eastwood, but will be down on all the other streets pending restoration. For more information on this project please click here. Water Main Replacement for the alley between Hermitage and Ravenswood from Montrsoe to 250' south of Cullom and Cullom from Ravenswood to Hermitage Crews from the Dept. of Water Management have replaced the water main in the alley between Hermitage and Ravenswood from Montrose to 250' south of Cullom. Sewer Main Replacement for Paulina from Montrose to Cullom & Cullom from Paulina to Ravenswood Crews from the Dept. of Water Management will be replacing the sewers from 1889 under Paulina from Montrose to Cullom & Cullom from Paulina to Ravenswood starting in June. This work will require a parking restrictions and a full street closure from 7am to 4pm Monday through Friday. There will also be a full closure of Montrose at Paulina for four days during this work.
