Dear Neighbor,

This week I met with principals from Lake View and Amundsen High Schools and their feeder schools at the Clark Park Boathouse. I convened this #GROW47 meeting along with the Chicago Rowing Foundation to discuss efforts to launch a rowing team at Lake View and Amundsen. The Clark Park Boathouse is used by rowing teams from local high schools and colleges. Some of the nation's top universities recruit students who participate in rowing programs in Chicago. My hope is that we can launch an Amundsen/Lake View row team this fall so our students also have the same opportunity. Why? For example, over 60% of girls who row in high school receive college scholarships. Student athletes who participate in the Chicago Rowing Foundation's (CRF) programs have earned rowing scholarships to MIT, Stanford, the University of Virginia, and Dartmouth! I am working with Ald. Pat O'Connor to secure funding for a high school program. The CRF will be reaching out to feeder schools to discuss their middle school rowing programs. I will keep you posted on our progress.

Since taking office, I have been working with the Clark Park Advisory Council, Mayor Emanuel, Chicago Public Schools (CPS), and the Chicago Park District to invest in new facilities at Clark Park. To make that happen, my office allocated over $15 million in TIF funds to advance major capital improvement projects at Clark Park. The TIF funds were allocated to the following projects:

Clark Park Boathouse (a state of the art rowing and training center)
Kerry Wood Cubs Field (Spring 2015)
A new soccer and track facility

Investments to Clark Park follow over $40 million in TIF investments we've made to public school, parks, libraries, and public infrastructure in the 47th Ward. To learn more about these investments, please click here .

I am pleased to announce that #GROW47 will now be known as #GROWCommunity! The plan is to expand #GROW47 beyond the 47th Ward and work with our neighboring communities and aldermen to develop a neighborhood K-12 system around Amundsen and Lake View High Schools. More on this effort next week.

The Cook County Assessor's Office has released property tax exemption applications for tax year 2014 (for tax bills payable for 2015). This month - the Assessor's Office has made available the homeowner, senior and senior freeze exemption applications. The Long-Time Occupant Exemption Application is to be released in February 2015 by the Assessor's Office. 2015 Block Party Applications

Did you know our community is home to approximately 200 block parties every year? Dates fill up fast so get your applications in ASAP! While summer may feel like a far off dream right now, I encourage you to fill out the 2015 Block Party Application. The Jumping Jack form for 2015 will be available later this spring. We will add the forms to the application packet and give notice of that in our newsletter when the form becomes available.

If your block hasn't held a block party before, 2015 is your year! To hold a block party for the first time all you need to do is circulate a petition amongst your neighbors acknowledging their support for the event; then submit the petition along with your application packet.

Calling All Artisans...

The Northtown Garden Society is holding a Nature and Garden Arts and Crafts Fair on Saturday, May 2, 2015, to raise funds for our community service and educational programs. We are seeking artists and crafters to sell their creations at our fair which will be held from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Warren Park Field House, 6601 N. Western Avenue.

The theme of our fair is Nature and Gardening thus all art works need to depict gardening or nature or, in the case of soaps, candles, textiles, jewelry or foods, be made of natural products. We will offer all media including but not restricted to paintings, woodworking, textiles, soaps, ceramics, mosaics, photography and jewelry.

St. Matthias School's Garden Committee is pleased to announce that a new brick walkway has been installed on the Ainslie side of the building. Approximately 800 4" x 8" clay pavers comprise a safer, better-looking walkway that will serve as the centerpiece of the Sprouts Garden project.

Any resident or business owner in the ward can make a valuable and enduring contribution to the Sprouts Garden by purchasing an engraved paver during this season of giving. Your contribution is entirely tax-deductible. Pavers are available for $100 (4" x 8 ") or $225 (8" x 8"). A limited number of $500 legacy pavers (8" x 16") are available, as well. I want to say a special thank you to our neighbors who generously shoveled and used their snow blowers for others. There are too many of you to list. Here's one that stood out. Bill L. lives on Eastwood, one of the many dead end streets in the ward, where large plows can't maneuver. He called to tell us that the small 4x4 pick-up truck with a front hitch didn't make a dent in the 19" of snow in the street. I had just received a request from an elderly neighbor two blocks away from him. I asked if he could shovel for her. As aggravated as he was, he kindly said yes. All of you are what makes this ward one the very best places to live in Chicago.

Save the Date - Riverbank Fundraiser - Saturday, March 7 at 7pm

For everyone who enjoys birdwatching, feeding the ducks, watching an urban native prairie change through the seasons or just strolling along the path watching the river flow.

Riverbank Neighbors, led by Pete Leki, the Ecology Director at Waters School, have been stewards of the east side of the river from Montrose to Belle Plaine for over 20 yrs. They are the only neighborhood group to have this agreement with MWRD. MWRD has finished their "restoration" to keep the riverbank from deteriorating. Now the real work begins - to build more paths, erect fencing and signage and augment the plantings. Through a partnership with 501C3, non-profit, Friends of the River, funds donated are tax deductible.

Congrats to Fares Zanayed, a neighbor on Berteau for over 40 years, for his Pi Hi Caf� being rated one of the top 100 places to eat in the U.S. by Yelp. Pi Hi Cafe is the only Chicago restaurant to break into the 100! Check it out: 3539 N. Western (I first met Fares when we worked together as election judges).

Exercise; it boosts your immune system. Get plenty of rest & sleep.

Lawrence Avenue Streetscape

Neighborhood identifiers are currently being installed and the contractor will fill the sidewalk vault at 1752 by mid-February.
The new traffic signal controller at Damen will be installed shortly and all traffic signals and pedestrian countdown clocks along the stretch will be re-timed to help improve traffic flow along the corridor.
This spring, all remaining plantings will be performed, fencing will be installed at Claremont Plaza, and the remaining punch list items will be addressed.

As always, pay close attention to parking restrictions.

Water Main Replacement for Rockwell from Irving Park to Berteau

Contractors working with the Dept. of Water Management will being replacing the water main from 1909 under Rockwell from Irving Park to Berteau soon. Staged parking restrictions and partial road closures will be necessary during working hours. Crews removed snow from the work area today, and will begin grinding on Monday. The project will then be staged in one-block segments and begin in earnest on Tuesday. For more information on this project, please click here.

Water Main Replacement for Berteau from Damen to Bell

Contractors working with the Dept. of Water Management have replaced the water main from 1894 under Berteau Avenue between Damen and Bell. Parking restrictions and road closures should no longer be needed. Crews have poured concrete in the trench pending full asphalt restoration in the spring as soon as weather allows. Water Main Replacement for Rockwell from Lawrence to Montrose & Eastwood from Virginia to Western

Contractors working with the Dept. of Water Management have replaced the water mains from 1906 under Rockwell from Lawrence to Montrose and Eastwood from Virginia to Western. Work is now complete with resurfacing and landscape restoration following in Spring 2015. For more information on this project, please click here.

Water Main Replacement for Seeley from Montrose to Wilson

Contractors working with the Dept. of Water Management have replaced the water main from 1890 under Seeley from Montrose to Wilson. The trenches are backfilled with concrete. Street resurfacing to be completed in Spring 2015. For more information on this project, please click here.

Water Main Replacement for Leavitt from Grace to Irving Park

Contractors working with the Dept. of Water Management are replacing the water main from 1896 under Leavitt between Grace and Irving Park. Final connections are complete and the trench is capped. Water Mains Coming Soon:

Western (Roscoe to Addison) - Expected to begin mid-February. Sign boards have gone up north of the project area to alert drivers to the extensive work that is beginning at Logan Blvd (Kennedy) and Western Ave. Crews are working their way north.

METRA Traffic Closures and Detours Around Ravenswood Avenue

New Metra Station (west side): Union Pacific needs to finish up their track work before the new station on the west side (outbound) can open, which is projected to happen this spring.
METRA Phase II: Design and engineering work is currently being performed for improvements to the east side of the tracks and will be put out to bid once complete. Construction of the bridges and new station is expected to start in the fall and will last approximately 18 months. Work on the east side will move faster than on the west side since the track is currently in place there and extensive retaining wall work is not necessary.
