March 13, 2015

On this day in 1942, the Quartermaster Corps (QMC) of the United States Army begins training dogs for the newly established War Dog Program, or "K-9 Corps."

Dear Neighbor,

This week I had the honor to give a TEDx talk at Discover Financial Services in Deerfield, Illinois. The theme of the TEDx event was, "Deciding to Decide." I focused my TEDx talk on our collective efforts to build a neighborhood K-12 system in our community. More specifcally, the TEDx talk focused on working with community members, parents, teachers, and business owners to collaborate across school boundaries and across political (ward) boundaries -- with the goal of building community around Lake View and Amundsen High Schools.

My office recently launched #GROWCommunity with Ald. Pat O'Connor and Ald. Tom Tunney, the city's first regional effort to build a neighborhood K-12 system. Over the next four years, we will be working together to identify resources, fund capital improvements, and organize our communities around our neighborhood high schools.  I will post the video on our website once it becomes available.

More on #GROWCommunity efforts soon!

Meeting with Deanery

Also this week, I had the honor to address the Deanery of all north side Catholic schools thanks to Monsignor Jim from Queen of Angels. At this meeting, leaders from each school relayed issues, concerns, and gave me feedback on how we can all work together to build a neighborhood K-12. More on these efforts soon!

2015 Aldermanic Menu Vote

Every year, each ward is allocated $1.32 million in aldermanic menu funding for public infrastructure projects. The next step in determining how our menu dollars will be spent is for all of you to vote on which projects you would like to see completed. The first step in this process was completed last Fall when individuals and neighborhood groups submitted block audits. For this menu season we received 176 block audits from all around the 47th Ward.  This is an all-time high -- up 60% from last year. I want to thank everyone who took the time to complete a block audit. To see the final report on last year's aldermanic menu program, please click here

In addition to the data provided by the block audits, the 47th Ward Team has been sorting through service request data from the city's 311 system and other requests made to our office to determine which projects to consider this year. They also excluded projects which have already been budgeted in a previous year or that were recently completed.

Voting for the 2015 aldermanic menu begins TODAY, and you can vote on projects by clicking here. To take a look at the projects before logging on to vote, please click here. Voting will be open until 5pm on Friday, April 3rd. While you and your neighbors are considering which projects to support, the 47th Ward Team will be traveling throughout the ward to survey all of our alleys, streets, sidewalks and other public infrastructure. I will use all of this data to finalize the list of projects that will be submitted to the City for this year's menu.

Please know that our submission is not the end of the process. The Chicago Department of Transportation carefully surveys each project. They also coordinate with the Department of Water Management and other utilities to ensure that our work is not done ahead of other major capital work like a water main replacement. This process saves valuable tax dollars, but can create changes in our initial submission. As always, we will report back to you on the projects selected for 2015.

Your input is vitally important as we determine which projects to fund with our limited budget. I hope that you will take the time to vote and please urge your neighbors to do so as well. If you have any questions, please contact my office.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,
Ameya

2015 Block Party Applications
Did you know our community is home to approximately 200 block parties every year? Dates fill up fast so get your applications in ASAP! While summer may feel like a far off dream right now, I encourage you to fill out the 2015 Block Party Application. The Jumping Jack form for 2015 will be available later this spring. We will add the forms to the application packet and give notice of that in our newsletter when the form becomes available.

If your block hasn't held a block party before, 2015 is your year! To hold a block party for the first time all you need to do is circulate a petition amongst your neighbors acknowledging their support for the event; then submit the petition along with your application packet.

NEW Ravenswood Neighbors Association
The East and West Ravenswood Neighbors Associations have merged to form a single Ravenswood Neighbors Association! Jeffrey Gawel is the president of this new community organization, and he on behalf of his fellow resident leaders on the Executive Committee (John Dillon, Ian Tobin, and Damian Raszewski), would like to invite all of you to a special Ravenswood Neighbors Association "Kick-Off Meet-and-Greet" event that will take place on Tuesday, March 24th, 7:00 PM.  O'Shaughnessy's (4557 N. Ravenswood) has graciously offered to host their event and will even be providing specials!  Also, Alderman Ameya Pawar is scheduled to join us, and we may be joined by one or two other guests as well.

Please stop by, meet and mingle with the Alderman and your neighbors, and learn more about this new neighborhood association!  Their boundaries are Montrose to Lawrence and Ashland to Damen, and everyone in the area is encouraged to join them!  They aspire to work with all of the area residents, businesses, and friends, regardless of where they live and in order to continue to make Ravenswood the BEST community in all of Chicago!

If you plan to attend, then kindly RSVP to ravenswoodneighbors@gmail.com so that they can get a sense as to how many people to expect.  Also, please be sure to LIKE thier Facebook page! Their new website will be launching soon, as well.

  Are you interested in:
  • Learning about security issues specific to our neighborhood?
  • Providing input and direction to Alderman Pawar on area needs?
  • Assisting with beautifying our public spaces?
  • Creating personal relationships with your neighbors?

If so, consider becoming a member of URBAN West, a newly-formed block club for residents who live within the following boundaries: south of Irving Park Road, east of the Chicago River, north of Addison Street and west of Western Avenue.

The next meeting is scheduled for March 30th. Email Sara Woods ( saraellenwoods@gmail.com) for
details and meeting location.

St. Matthias School

You can help pave the way to outdoor learning at the school by purchasing an engraved paver brick for the new walkway

St. Matthias School's Garden Committee is pleased to announce that a new brick walkway has been installed on the Ainslie side of the building. Approximately 800 4" x 8" clay pavers comprise a safer, better-looking walkway that will serve as the centerpiece of the Sprouts Garden project.

Any resident or business owner in the ward can make a valuable and enduring contribution to the Sprouts Garden by purchasing an engraved paver during this season of giving. Your contribution is entirely tax-deductible. Pavers are available for $100 (4" x 8 ") or $225 (8" x 8"). A limited number of $500 legacy pavers (8" x 16") are available, as well. The online purchase process is simple:

  1. Open www.stmatthiasschool.org
  2. Click 'Parent Center'
  3. Click 'Sprouts Garden Brick Pavers' and select your preferred paver size.

The available characters for an engraved message varies by paver size: up to 39 characters (4" x 8 "), up to 78 characters (8" x 8") and up to 156 characters (8" x 16"). We invite you to order before year-end to help us pave the way to a new outdoor, experiential learning space for our students beginning in spring 2015!

The Sprouts Garden is a self-funded project collaboration between parent volunteers and teachers who aspire to build and cultivate an engaging outdoor learning & exploration space for the students of St. Matthias School. If you have an idea to share, a garden resource to donate or you wish to purchase an engraved paver for the new walkway, then please let us know:
