October 10, 2014

On this day in 1871, the Great Chicago Fire was finally brought under control.

The 47th Ward Office will be CLOSED on Monday, October 13th.

Dear Neighbor,

Last Sunday, I joined Mayor Emanuel, Chicago Park District Superintendent Michael Kelly, and Chase Park Advisory Council President Margaret O'Conor to announce $2 million in improvements to Chase Park! The improvements include:

  • A new 77,000 square foot turf field which includes 2 baseball diamonds and a soccer field;
  • And resurfacing the existing track.

Chase Park is one of the most heavily used parks in the entire Chicago Park District system. And on any given day, multiple programs utilize the fieldhouse and fields. Over the years, Chase Park Supervisor Kate Fearon-Peon and the advisory council lovingly cared for the aging facilities and fields and raised funds to help support programming and facility maintenance. Thousands of families and individuals made Chase Park their recreation destination. The heavy use of the grass field often rendered it unusable at times - and the lack of drainage would cause the field to flood after every rain. The new turf field and track will include drainage capacity, save water, and eliminate the need for herbicides and pesticides. In sum, the turf field will ensure Chase Park is always usable regardless of weather conditions.

These projects don't happen without strong partnerships. I want to thank Katie Fearon-Peon, Margaret O'Conor, the Chase Park Advisory Council, and the entire Chase Park community for making Chase Park such a great place for everyone in our community. I also want to thank them for their tireless advocacy - this project would not have been possible without their efforts. Thank you!

And finally, in three and half years my office has been able to advance projects at Welles Park, Chase Park, Revere Park, and Clark Park with over $15 million in investments. None of these projects would have been possible without the partnership and leadership of Mayor Emanuel and Supt. Kelly. Thank you!

Ashland Avenue Update

Northbound Ashland is reopen from Irving Park to Lawrence and water main installation is complete.  Next week, crews will begin the resurfacing process for the northbound lanes from Irving Park to Lawrence.  Northbound resurfacing is expected to be complete by October 24th.  During resurfacing, parking restrictions and lane shifts will be necessary from 7am to 4pm on the northbound side of the project, but the full closures are over for northbound traffic.

Starting Monday, October 13th, southbound Ashland will be CLOSED between Lawrence and Montrose, Monday through Friday from 7am to 8pm so the crews can begin installing the new water main in this final section.  The designated detour route is Lawrence to Damen.  Please follow all signs and avoid travel in the area, when possible.  Wilson will continue to be open to E/W traffic from 7am to 9am and 4pm to 6pm to help alleviate congestion.  The project continues to progress toward total completion by the end of the construction season. Please keep an eye on our infrastructure map for updates.  Thanks for your continued patience with this major project.

Street Sweeping
From April 1 until December 1 the Department of Streets and Sanitation has sweepers working in the 47th Ward to clear debris and dust from residential and arterial streets.  The schedule for street cleaning on residential and arterial streets can be found on chicago47.org
2014-2015 Residential Pick-up/Van Permits Available

If you are the owner of a pickup truck or van, you need a special permit to park on the residential streets in the 47th Ward.

The permits for the 2014-2015 season are now available.  Please bring your registration and city sticker information into our office along with your truck to receive your permit.

Report Graffiti

Be sure to report any graffiti to our office (info@chicago47.org, 773-868-4747), 311, or through the Chicago Works app.  You'll need to know the address, type of surface, and whether or not the tag is more than six feet from the ground.  Graffiti that contains profanity, hate language or is done on a church or school receives special attention.

The faster we remove graffiti the less likely vandals are to target that area again.  Thanks for your help!

Welcome Home: New Art Exhibit at the Ward Office

Alderman Ameya Pawar's vision of highlighting the works of local artists in his office has been realized through the OpenWall Chicago initiative directed by Patricia Larkin Green. Every quarter the OpenWall Chicago committee determines a theme, then displays artwork in this public space. The current exhibit, Welcome Home, features the artwork of eight veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces who live and work in the 47th Ward. Featured artists are Jasmine Clark, Stuart Hall, Mike Helbing, Jeanine Hill-Soldner, Patrick Kerrigan, Dennis Paterka, Patrick Gale Putze and Piotr Wolodkowicz. The show is curated by Thomas Gianni and Bill Moran and runs through November 30.

The public is invited to mingle with the alderman and his staff, the local community and the artists to discuss their works at the opening reception on Sunday, October 19, from 12:30 to 3:00. Kevin Barszcz, founder and marketing director of Chicago Vets, will give a talk at the reception. Chicago Vets is a non-profit organization that helps Chicago-area service members and their families' transition back to civilian life. To learn more about the artists and the event, please check out the OpenWall Chicago website at www.openwallchicago.org and leave your comments.

We ask if you would please take a survey which covers a topic that has been talked about increasingly in our neighborhoods.  How are you thinking about housing in your future? Although this is a very personal subject, we believe it is imperative to ask. We want to discover, assess and consider what the needs are in the future. We'd like to know what folks are thinking about or perhaps they aren't, yet.  In any case, we are all aging and we want folks to live where and as they want to. With your help, this survey will inform Forward Chicago on the best ways to help us age in place within our community.
