On this day in  1988, the lights go on in Wrigley Field, which had been the only major league park where night games were not played.

Dear Neighbor,

Join me this weekend (Friday and Saturday evening) at Welles Park for a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream by the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. Both free shows are brought to you by a partnership between the City of Chicago, the Chicago Park District, the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, corporate sponsors and the Welles Park Advisory Council. Thank you!

Show details are below:

A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare
Where: Welles Park - 2333. W Sunnyside - Near the Gazebo
When: Friday, August 8, 6:30 p.m. & Saturday, August 9, 6:30 p.m.

I will be kicking off each show with a 45 minute speech ... I'm kidding because that would be a Shakespearean tragedy! But I will be at both shows and I hope to see you there.

#RallyRoundLakeView

Since taking office in 2011, my all-in has been our neighborhood schools. And to that end, my office launched #GROW47. The goal: to build complete neighborhood K-12 system in our community. Simply put, my goal is to provide families what they seek out the suburbs - a community K-12 experience - one that removes the stress of navigating the selective enrollment system. And in three years, #GROW47 has allocated millions in TIF funds to neighborhood schools, raised over $400k in private funds, and funded projects at every school in the ward. Now we are focusing our attention to neighborhood high schools.

To jumpstart the neighborhood high school component, I am asking you to join me at the #RallyRoundLakeView event. On August 23, at 8:30 AM, join Lake View High School Principal Scott Grens, Lake View Partners, GROW47, local elected officials, and me for a Lake View High School Beautification Day! We will be painting, cleaning, and building community around our neighborhood high school. Rep. Ann Williams and Friends of Ameya Pawar (my political action committee) are picking up the cost of the paint--all you have to do is show up, roll up your sleeves, and help us build a neighborhood K-12 system in our community.
  • You can sign up for the Lake View Beautification Day by clicking here.
  • Learn more about #GROW47 by clicking here.
  • Learn more about #GROW47's neighborhood high school push by clicking here
Looking forward to seeing you around the neighborhood on this beautiful weekend!

Sincerely,
Ameya

Report Graffiti

As the weather turns warmer, we are seeing more graffiti throughout Chicago.  Be sure to report any graffiti to our office (info@chicago47.org, 773-868-4747), 311, or through the Chicago Works app.  You'll need to know the address, type of surfac

ed, and whether or not the tag is more than six feet from the ground.  Graffiti that contains profanity, hate language or is done o n a church or school receives special attention. e tagg

The faster we remove graffiti the less likely vandals are to target that area again.  Thanks for your help!

Chicago Fire Department Accepting Applicants
The application period for the entry-level Firefighter/EMT exam is NOW OPEN and will run through September 16.  This is the period of time when applicants can sign up for the exam, which will be administered on December 13 and 14, 2014.  In 2006, the age to sit for the exam was 19 and the age to enter the academy was 20. CFD has lowered the age to sit for the exam and enter the academy to 18. It is their hope that younger individuals who get on the eligibility list will be motivated to attend college and stay out of trouble and will find a sense of opportunity about their futures.

City of Chicago Municipal Aggregation Update

If you are part of the city's municipal aggregation program for electricity, you should have received notice in the mail regarding updated terms to the City's deal with Integrys Energy Services. There is now a new structure for a monthly customer charge that may cost you more money. It depends on your energy consumption and customer code.

The Citizens Utility Board has a calculator on their website.  Be sure to have your electric bill handy.  Additionally, they have a listing of alternative providers and their prices. If you simply opt-out, you will be returned to the regular ComEd rate, which is slated to change to an unknown amount in September.

Be sure to carefully examine all of your options before making a decision. You can opt-out of the municipal aggregation program at any time for any reason without penalty.

Sunday Play Spot: A Pop-Up Plaza on Lincoln Avenue this September!

Every Sunday afternoon this September, the Sunday Play Spot will transform one block of Lincoln Avenue, from School to Roscoe, into Lakeview's pop-up plaza! From noon to 4pm, stop by the Sunday Play Spot to enjoy free playful activities for kids and adults alike, or relax outside and have a picnic. Stay tuned to http://www.sundayplayspot.com for more information about weekly programming. Sunday Play Spot is organized by the Lakeview Chamber of Commerce in partnership with SSA 27, 47th Ward Alderman Ameya Pawar, and local businesses and institutions.

Chicago Market - A Community Co-Op

Chicago Market - A Community Co-Op is a large-scale grocery co-op being planned for the city's north side that will focus on local, sustainable, organic food. Chicago Market will be a big, bright, beautiful full-service grocery store offering one-stop shopping with a butcher, baker, full produce and dry goods selection and more

As a co-operative, Chicago Market is owned and run by the Owners. Owners will get to choose the leadership of the Cooperative, they will receive discounts and patronage refunds, and they will get to have a say in building their dream grocery store. The Market is in the midst of an ownership campaign (#1000in100) to recruit 1,000 Owners over the summer.

The next information session in Lincoln Square is at The Dank Haus on August 12 at 7:00 PM - you can RSVP here: http://www.chicagomarket.coop/info-session-august-12. Owners and Steering Committee members will be on hand to answer your questions and tell you more about the Market. And we'll be prepared to sign up new Owners who are ready to buy a stake in this cooperative grocery store.

Pet Summer Safety Tips
  • Water - Give your pets plenty of fresh, clean water.  Animals can get dehydrated very quickly especially in the heat.
  • Shade - Make sure your pet has a place to go to get out of the sun.  Try to keep them indoors during extreme heat.
  • Rest - Do not over-exercise your animal in the heat.  On a sweltering day, the best time to exercise your pet is in the early morning or late evening.
  • Watch - Never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle.  In extreme heat, the temperature can rise in your vehicle very quickly.  This can leave your pet vulnerable to heat stroke, which can onset very quickly.

Arts & Culture in the 47th Ward: LAST ARTICLE !
by Luis Lopez Reichling

"Night Out in the Parks," an annual program presented by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Park District, stages hundreds of free world-class cultural events throughout our city each summer. Many of these events take place in and around the 47th Ward, including dance, music and theater performances; film screenings; and family-friendly exercise classes. Upcoming productions include a performance of Shakespeare's "Motley Crew" in Winnemac Park (August 9, 10, 16, 17, 23 & 24); a screening of "Despicable Me" in Hamlin Park (August 14); and Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at Welles Park (August 8 & 9). In addition, the Welles Park gazebo presents live music every Tuesday at 6:30 pm, featuring a wide variety of artists and genres ranging from the Mexican-American Corrientes ensemble (August 12) to the Southern folk singer Jane Baxter Miller (August 26). These are ideal opportunities to enjoy excellent theater and music in the open air with family, friends and a picnic! Check out the full schedule for "Night Out in the Parks" events. This is a truly remarkable public program!

Regretfully, this is my last Arts & Culture column for the 47th Ward newsletter. At the end of the month I will leave Chicago to begin my freshman year at the New York University campus in Florence, Italy. Many thanks to Alderman Pawar and his fantastic staff for the opportunity to explore and write about the local cultural scene during these past five months. Although I will not miss the frozen winters, I leave Chicago with great respect for our city's vibrant and diverse artists and the organizations that support them.

Did You Know? .......

  • No one over the age of 12 may ride a bicycle on the sidewalk
  • You may call 911 if there are cars parked during street cleaning
  • Cars may not park in their driveway on what would be the parkway.
  • Disconnecting your downspouts can be a huge help in preventing flooding.
  • You may order daily parking passes for permit parking online. Not for Cubs Night Games, though.

Thanks to good neighbor Andrew, the north-east side of Damen & Wilson doesn't flood after a rain. He sweeps the top of the drain, which keeps the water running and the street clean.

Do you have a good neighbor who deserves a shout out? Let us know.
