The 47th Ward Office will be CLOSED on Monday, March 3rd for a City Holiday

Dear Neighbor,

This week I am pleased to announce that GROW47, 47th Ward 'Friends of' groups, and my office secured $350k in grant funding from Tim Barrett and Gene Porto from Barrett & Porto Real Estate and Sy Taxman from the Taxman Group (the developers for the new Mariano's/LA Fitness/Sears Auto Center). The funds will be used to help complete three new outdoor campus playground projects and one outdoor science lab.

Rendering of Audubon Outdoor Campus

GROW47 is a collaborative effort between my office and every neighborhood school in the 47th ward. The goal: create a neighborhood K-12 system. I firmly believe that the health of our communities, the vitality of our small businesses, and property values are rooted in neighborhood schools. That is, great neighborhood schools equal great communities. This means, we all have an interest in seeing our neighborhood schools succeed, every one of us. Here is my point -- I believe that if we invest and market our schools, the economic development will naturally follow the education investment. To that end, since 2011, we have been organizing the 'Friends of' groups, Local School Councils, and school principals to raise private funds, apply for grants, and bring other resources to bear; all while directing 47th ward TIF funds into our neighborhood schools. And in three years, GROW47 members and my office have advanced major projects at EVERY neighborhood school in the 47th Ward!

Here is what we've accomplished so far:

  • Implemented StoryBus program for all 47th Ward schools for 2013-2014 year
  • Allocated $16.5 million in TIF funding for Coonley Elementary annex
  • Allocated $2 million in TIF funding for Lake View High School STEM Program
  • Secured $10 million in State capital funding for the Bell Elementary annex
  • Allocated $160,000 in aldermanic menu funding for Ravenswood Elementary
  • Secured $10,000 in donations from Warner Brothers for Ravenswood Elementary
  • Secured $750,000 in IL EPA grant funds in partnership with the Friends of Ravenswood School for the school's outdoor play spaces
  • Allocated $205,000 in aldermanic menu funding for Audubon Elementary
  • Identified $600,000 in funding for McPherson Elementary 's outdoor play spaces from City open space impact fees, Sen. Heather Steans & Rep. Greg Harris' resources and aldermanic menu funds
  • Secured $350k in private grant funds for McPherson, Waters, Ravenswood, and Audubon

These investments in our neighborhood schools will sustain our community over the long term, and it is my hope that we can translate today's success into the GROW47 vision of a neighborhood K-12 system. Over the next few years, I am going to double-down on current efforts at Lake View High School and partner with Ald. Pat O'Connor on Amundsen High School. As always, I will keep you posted on our progress.

I want to take a moment and thank Tim, Gene, and Sy for seeking out opportunities to partner with schools in our community. One of the first things they did was partner with our office to create the FREE Mariano's Senior Shuttle. We launched the shuttle in November of 2013. The bus takes residents of Martha Washington, Belle Plaine Commons, Mary Hartwell Catherwood apartments, and seniors from the Senior Satellite Center located at the Saint Vincent DePaul Senior Residences to Mariano's Fresh Markets. Previously, the City of Chicago funded a grocery bus service but the service was cut as part of the 2010 budget. Since we knew a grocery bus service was a need for seniors in our community, we were able to make this great connection with the Barrett & Porto/Taxman development team and re-instate a wonderful community service. Next, Tim, Gene, and Sy began to work with GROW47 and local schools to identify projects to which they could provide grant assistance. After working with the principals, LSCs, 'Friends of' groups, and my office, Tim, Gene, and Sy decided to create a grant program to fund capital projects at four schools. They have been wonderful partners and have established themselves as great community members. Thank you for your community leadership.

You may be wondering how you can help. I urge you to run for a Local School Council, join your school's 'Friends of' organization, or just spread the word about the great happenings at our local schools. You'd be surprised how far a positive comment travels! Finally, I want to thank GROW47 chairmen Paul Rosenfeld and Dan Hynes for volunteering their time and energy in this effort. And I want to thank every principal, LSC member, and 'Friends of' group for helping make GROW47 a success.

Thank you

I want to end this newsletter by thanking you for the opportunity to serve this community. Last Saturday marked the 3 year anniversary of my election as alderman. We've accomplished a great deal in three years and it has been an incredible experience. I look forward to serving you in 2014 and if you will have me back, for another term.

Sincerely,
Ameya

Wrigley Field Community Meeting

Act Now to Cover Yourself and Your Family

Did you know that there's a new way for you to find the health insurance you need?

Individuals and families in Illinois can now sign up for quality health coverage through Get Covered Illinois by visiting www.GetCoveredIllinois.gov. Through the Marketplace, you can make side-by-side comparisons of health coverage options and find the plan that works best for you, your family and your budget.

All of the plans you'll find through Get Covered Illinois cover important things like doctor visits, hospital stays, prescriptions and more. And you won't be denied coverage if you are sick or already have a condition like asthma, diabetes or even cancer.

You may even be able to get help paying for your plan. For example, if you are an individual who earns less than $45,960 a year, or a member of a family of four that makes less than $94,200 a year, you may be able to get a tax credit to help pay for your health insurance coverage. You may even qualify for a free or low-cost plan.

Sometimes finding the right health plan can be confusing. The good news is that you don't have to figure it out alone. There are specially trained counselors, called Navigators, who are available to help you learn about your choices and enroll for free - online, by phone or in-person. To enroll online or find a Navigator near you, visit www.GetCoveredIllinois.gov.

It's an exciting new state of health care in Illinois. Having health insurance means being there for your family when they need you. With a plan from Get Covered Illinois, you'll know you can get the care you need, when you need it, including free preventive care to help you stay healthy. No one plans to get sick or injured, but if the unexpected happens, you'll now be able to see a doctor or go to the hospital without racking up huge medical bills.

So why wait? Enrollment is open through March 31, 2014. Take the first step to getting covered. To enroll online or find a Navigator near you, visit www.GetCoveredIllinois.gov or call the toll-free Help Desk at (866) 311-1119, open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Heartland Alliance is hosting a number of enrollment events in Chicago.  For a calendar of those, please click here.

March is Red Cross Month

March is Red Cross Month and the American Red Cross is recognizing everyday heroes who reach out to help their neighbors.These everyday heroes lend a hand to those in need in communities across the country by:

  • Helping people affected by disasters get on the road to recovery.
  • Giving blood to help a hospital patient.
  • Brightening the day of an injured service member who is hospitalized far from home.
  • Stepping forward to assist someone having a heart attack or to save a drowning child.
  • Reuniting families torn apart by war or conflict in other parts of the world.

This March, during Red Cross Month, they're encouraging everyone to discover their inner hero by giving time to help a neighbor, make a financial or blood donation or take a Red Cross class in First Aid and CPR. Here's 4 ways you can join in this effort:

  1. Give blood. Many blood drives were cancelled the first 6 weeks of winter because of the weather. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. Call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit www.redcrossblood.org to make an appointment.
  2. Take a First Aid and CPR class and learn lifesaving skills at www.redcross.org.
  3. Become a Red Cross volunteer. More than 90% of our workforce is volunteers. Since Jan.1 our volunteers helped more than 1,000 people in our 13-county region after home fires. They also taught First Aid classes, hosted blood drives, visit with military member and veterans and much more. Get started here: www.redcross.org/support/volunteer.

  4. Be prepared for and respond to disasters and other life-threatening emergencies. Download the Red Cross apps for First Aid, tornadoes and more at  www.redcross.org/prepare/mobile-apps.

Ah, warm weather - It's coming - I know it is. Here's a way to spend a day in warm climate without leaving the city and plan for fun we can have in our exciting city this Spring & Summer.

An anonymous neighbor clears the snow in the 2500 Leland alley every time it snows

A neighbor fell while getting out of the car and two good Samaritans stopped to help her up.

These are just two instances of neighbors who go out of their way to be kind. Many thanks to these and other good folks who make our neighborhood one of the best places to live in the city.

During our Fall Clean-up we collected books for Open Books. Thanks to your generosity, here's what your book donations are accomplishing:

Sulzer Regional Library will begin offering teens hands-on experiences with digital technology this summer as part of a $2.5 million expansion of the Chicago Public Library.

Through YOUMedia, teens will have the opportunity to learn how to use digital technology such as 3-D printers and laser cutters, as well as participate in workshops about digital media production, be it photography, music, animation or graphic design. Along with giving teens access to technology, the program offers mentoring from adults who share their digital expertise.  Thanks to the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation for a $2 million grant and $500,000 from the city.

Early Voting

The Primary is March 18. If, like me, you enjoy voting early - it runs from Monday, March 3 - Saturday, March 15 at Welles Park; Monday-Saturday 9am-5pm and on Sunday 9am-3pm

Click here for more information.

Under a state law that went into effect Jan. 1, someone can vote at age 17 in a primary election - such as the one scheduled on March 18 to pick each party's candidates for governor, congressmen and some local offices - if the teen will turn 18 before the general election related to that primary, which in this case will occur Nov. 4.

Our 47th Ward Green Council is looking for folks who want to work on an initiative that started in the Netherlands and is taking off all over the world. www.repaircafe.org

We will have a space monthly for folks to bring broken items that need fixing; a small appliance, sewing a hem, or a broken chair leg. What we need are interested handy folks to share their knowledge and skills. We have the place - now we need some handy folks who want to help keep items out of the landfill and help their neighbors.

We will continue to collect warm items all winter; as we are told more are needed. Please clean out your closets; someone else can use your children's outgrown jackets and the coats, hats and gloves you no longer wear?  We also welcome donations of pet food, towels and blankets for those pets less fortunate than our own.

On the 3rd Friday of the month The Lincoln Square Friendship Center 2733 W. Lawrence is the home to Friendship Pet Food Pantry. Pet food is provided to folks who are having a hard time feeding their beloved pets.

We have been so successful that we are currently out of cat food. If you would like to donate bags or cans of cat food or cat litter, it would be greatly appreciated. You may drop off donations at the alderman's office or Lincoln Square Friendship Center on Thursday afternoons or during the monthly Pet Food Pantry at 2733 W. Lawrence.

Upcoming dates are: March 21, April 18, May 16 from 3-5pm

If you know anyone who needs assistance, please pass this along.

In their 1st three distribution dates a month's supply of food was given to:

92 cats & 38 dogs!

Lincoln Square Friendship Center Pantry Are you interested in our newest neighborhood pantry? Sign up for their newsletter: lincolnsquarefc@gmail.com

There are many ways for you to help - volunteer, help fundraise, hold a food drive, donate bins, pick-up donations, sponsor/manage a community garden bed. We are neighbors helping neighbors and making a difference.

Forward Chicago Bridge & Chess Club meets at Sulzer Library on the first and third Fridays of the month from 10:30am to 12pm.  All are welcome.

Sulzer needs your old games.  Thanks to our neighbors who have donated games for the Sulzer's Game Night!  If you have games that your family no longer uses, please bring them to the 47th Ward Office or to Sulzer Library. Their ever-popular "Game Night" could use a few more board games like Sorry, Chess, Life, Uno, Jenga, Rummy Cube, etc.

Chicago River Work (east side) Berteau to Montrose (from Riverbank Neighbors)

Please check out this updated landscaping plan for the bank.

New to the plan:

  • removal of all Ailanthus, honeysuckle and buckthorn (all invasives);
  • add soil to the rip rap on the upper sections of the project area to make planting easier and recovery quicker;
  • substitute for the elderberry, since we said we have a thriving e-berry community already;
  • substituted a cover seed mix instead of the IDOT mix we objected to;
  • four species of gray dogwood (stakes) that a vigorous colonizers for the new territories.

These will be substantial new lands, with the bank secured, and planting begun. Riverbank Neighbors will be able to enrich species diversity over time and introduce many new forbs. Habitat for birds and reptiles and amphibians and mammals will be greatly improved.
