Dear Neighbor,

I am excited to announce that the Friends of Ravenswood School (FORS) has been awarded a $750,000 grant from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. The grant is a major component of a $1.5 million project to manage stormwater flooding in the school playlot and renovate the existing space. An outdoor amphitheater, a turf field and new play spaces will be created in the space, and a green infrastructure component will be implemented to reduce localized flooding. My office partnered with FORS to develop this grant, and worked with Governor Quinn and Senate President Cullerton to secure the funding. In addition, I am allocating $100,000 in aldermanic menu funds to help make this project a reality as we continue our efforts to secure more funds for this project.

To see a detailed rendering of the proposed project, click on the image.

While we partnered with FORS on the grant, all the credit goes to this amazing group of parents and community members. They have spent countless hours writing grants and appeal letters, making phone calls, advocating for the project and going door-to-door to drum up support for Ravenswood School. I also want to congratulate FORS members Cornelia Grumman, Wendy Vasquez, Adam Walsh, Michael Waechter and everyone involved in this major effort. It goes to show how much a community can accomplish when they organize and partner with all levels of government. Finally, I want to thank Governor Pat Quinn, Senator John Cullerton, Senator Heather Steans and Representative Greg Harris for their partnership and continued leadership on this project.

If you are interested in contributing to this effort click here.

Sincerely,
Ameya

Café Selmarie Celebrates 30 Year Anniversary in Lincoln Square

Acclaimed neighborhood destination Café Selmarie is celebrating its 30th year of business in Lincoln Square this month. To mark the occasion, Café Selmarie will be offering its customers special deals and discounts on food and merchandise for the entire week of September 23rd to the 29th, plus special $30 prix fixe dinner menus for the weekend leading up to the occasion. On September 23, 1983, in what was then an out-of-the-way location on Giddings plaza in Lincoln Square, owners Birgit Kobayashi and Jeanne Uzdawinis opened the doors of Café Selmarie for the first time. It was a tiny storefront with little more than a few tables, a display case full of pastries and an espresso machine. Since then, it has expanded and grown in that very location, becoming one of the most cherished neighborhood destinations in Chicago for contemporary American dining as well as for pastries and desserts. Promotions for the anniversary celebration will commence the weekend of September 20th - 22nd with $30, 3-course prix fixe dinner menus designed by Executive Chef Bryant Anderson and will include dessert from Café Selmarie's in-house bakery. During the week of September 23rd to the 29th, all dine-in guests will be treated to come-back coupons good for future dining deals including gift certificates, 30% off entrees, wine and beer discounts, free desserts and more. Visit www.cafeselmarie.com. Congratulations Café Selmarie!

Disposing of Expired and Unused Prescription Drugs

Chicago's pharmaceutical disposal program offers you an easy and safe way to dispose of unwanted prescriptions.  The Chicago Police Department and Chicago Department of Public Health recently expanded the number of drop-off locations which includes the North Area Headquarters at Belmont and Western in the 47th Ward.  You can also drop unwanted prescriptions at the Household Chemical and Computer Recycling Facility located at 1150 N. North Branch St.

By using the police facilities as a drop-off location, controlled substances can be deposited safely and destroyed under the observation of sworn law enforcement officials.  The Chicago pharmaceutical program is provided as a service for residents only.  Business and commercial sector waste will not be accepted at any of the drop-off locations.

Workforce Development Investment Puts More Chicagoans Back to Work

The Chicago Department of Aviation will provide up to $1.6 million in funding over three years for worker training and direct placement program assistance to help unemployed Chicago residents obtain positions at companies that contract with O'Hare International Airport. The funding will be utilized by Skills for Chicagoland's Future (SCF), a public-private partnership working to close the skills gap by helping to match businesses that have current, unmet hiring needs with qualified, unemployed job seekers. For more information about SCF, visit www.skillsforchicagolandsfuture.com.

The last phase of the Irving Park Streetscape, removing the old streetlights and quality control repairs to pavers and final curb repairs will begin over the next few weeks.  This was delayed due to an electrical issue that has since been resolved. We expect all work to be complete in the middle of October.
