The Incomprehensibility of God Some people claim to know God and know God quite well - even to know how God might have voted in the recent elections. Our tradition, however, has always believed that God is mystery, beyond any ability of human comprehension. What we know is what has been revealed to us in scripture and in Jesus Christ - we have about as much ability to comprehend the mind of God as an ant has in understanding the complexity of the Smithsonian Institution. What are the three most important characteristics of a Christian? Calvin is said to have quipped, "Humility, humility, humility'. He probably didn't actually say it - but he could have! So, as some spin the Mayan Calendar prediction to mean the world is coming to an end on December 21, consider that God's mind is not our mind. To that end, I share something written by astrophysicist Neil de Grasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium: "If the events that span the 15 billion year timeline of the universe were laid along the length of a football field, then all of human history would span the thickness of a blade of grass in the end zone." Next time you hear someone too full of themselves for their own good - remember that they, and their entire species, is but a blade of grass. Only God is God.
In Faith,

Pastor Tim
