One More Book to Read....
Scripture warns us that 'of making more books there is no end.' Nonetheless I could not resist buying New York Times columnist Ross Douthat's new book, Bad Religion: How We Became a Nation of Heretics.
I've just begun the read - but it promises interesting. Douthat explores the many suburban evangelicals who embrace a 'gospel of prosperity' that teaches that living a Christian life will make you wealthy. He also writes of the literalists who want to "wish away a century and a half of scholarship that has clearly shown that the canonized Gospels were written decades after Jesus' ministry." He also finds time to explore the phenomenon of the 'young earth people'- those who dismiss logic, science, and common sense to insist that the earth is less than 6,000 years old.
How did we get to be a nation of heretics? Something has gone wrong, and I will read Douthat to see what he proposes for an answer. I suspect it has something to do with fear - that Biblical idolatry is the response of panic to the uncertainty of life.
I'll let you know what I learn.
