Thank You - Scotiabank Marathon

CPA (Alberta) was the recipient of approximately $37,000 raised at the Scotiabank Marathon held on June 1st in Calgary. Thank you to all of our supporters who helped make this event such a success. Special thanks to Shamel Elsayed, long time member and supporter of CPA (Alberta), who raised pledges and participated in the event even when recovering from recent health issues. Thank you as well to CPA (Alberta) staff members, Russ Bray and Marilyn Erho who contributed to the success of the event and also came out to participate!  Check out Facebook for lots of photos. 

 

Family Fun Day!

Adapted Adventures Program  
Adapted Adventures LogoThe latest Adapted Adventures newsletter has been sent out. Missed it? Click here. The CPA (Alberta) Adapted Adventures Program offers opportunities to participate in various recreational activities, such as spin classes, rock climbing, cross country skiing, scuba diving, etc. CPA (Alberta) provides quality instruction, adapted equipment and affordable programs to minimize barriers of participation. Subsidies available if necessary. All abilities welcome, as well as family and friends. 

Upcoming events Include:

July 14, 2014 - the first Paddling night of the summer. Paddling (canoeing and kayaking) takes place Monday evenings from 6:30-8:00pm at Kirk Lake. *First time free to try it out!

July 21, 2014 - Fishing at Hermitage Park from 1:00-3:00pm. Adapted equipment available, including a Sip n' Puff machine! *First time free to try it out!

July 30-August 3, 2014 - Big Valley Jamboree (BVJ). Adapted Adventures and our fantastic group of volunteers will be attending BVJ to sell programs. Part of the proceeds will go towards supporting the Adapted Adventures programs.

August 15-17, 2014 - Adapted Hiking Weekend at Mosquito Creek Wilderness Hostel. There will be TrailRiders, other new equipment and volunteers to assist adaptive hikers available so everyone can get out and enjoy the trails. Friends and family welcome!

August 25, 2014 - Fishing at Hermitage Park from 1:00-3:00pm.

Adapted Adventures Volunteer Opportunities:

Hands in the air We are looking for willing volunteers to assist with our weekly programs:

  • Cycling:
    • Intermediate Group - Tuesday's, 6:30-8:00pm. Locations vary throughout the city
    • Advanced Group - Wednesday's, 6:30-8:00pm. Locations vary throughout the city
    • Beginner Group - Thursday's, 1:00-3:00pm at Hawrelak Park in parking lot at picnic site #2

Volunteers would assist with lifts/transfers as well as cycle during the ride with the group.

  • Paddling: Monday evening's from 6:30-8:00pm at Kirk Lake. Volunteers will assist with transfers, pair up to paddle with participants.
  • Hiking Weekend: Volunteers are needed to act as "sherpas" for the TrailRiders during hikes, assist with meal preparation, and general cleanup.

Salute to Excellence Award  

Larry Pempeit Long time CPA (Alberta) staff member, Larry Pempeit was recognized for his outstanding community service on behalf of Albertans with disabilities. The award was presented during the Salute to Excellence Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at the Francis Winspear Centre on June 16, 2014.
