University Honours Advocate for People with Disabilities
Louise Miller, University of Alberta alumna worked as a registered nurse for 20 years and taught at the U of A for 32 years. She co-founded the Spinal Cord Injury Treatment Centre Society in Edmonton and served as a leader for numerous associations and foundations. In 2000, Miller was appointed as a member of the Order of Canada.

The CPA (Alberta) Adapted Adventures Program offers opportunities to participate in recreational activities, such as rock climbing, paddling, hand cycling, scuba diving, trail running with the TrailRider, fishing and cross country skiing. We provide quality instruction, adapted equipment and affordable programs to minimize barriers of participation. Subsidies available if necessary. All abilities welcome, as well as family and friends.

Hand Cycle Clinic Rolls On

Grande Prairie Residential Society (GPRS) AGM
Twenty people attended the June 18 BBQ and meeting where the 2013/14 Board of Directors was elected.  

 

Community Living Attendant Training Program Launches in Grande Prairie! 

GPRS and CPA (Alberta) Grande Prairie office partner to bring the Community Living Attendant Training to Grande Prairie. Classes from October 15 - December 1, 2013. Location to be announced. Please let us know if you are interested in helping with the following: home hosts, classroom monitoring, program coordination (total 2 months), and instruction.  Recruitment and screening will start soon. If you are interested in being a student, call us!  Space for 15 people.  

 

Inter-Agency Action Committee
The second meeting of an inter-agency action committee was held on June 12th. This committee hopes to collaborate on events such as International Day for Persons with Disabilities, region wide issues such as advocating for specialists or coordinated medical trips to Edmonton, and workshops such as Discovering the Power in Me.

Researchers Restore Bladder Control in Paralyzed RatsStem Cells

Researchers have developed a promising technique that may some day restore bladder function in people with paralysis. They have regenerated nerves involved in bladder control in rats with spinal cord injuries, making it possible for the animals to urinate normally again. Click here to read more.

Paralympic Sports Association (PSA) All-For-One Camps

PSA's All-For-One summer camps take place between July and August and currently have openings. All camps are open to all abilities. Camps include a variety of different activities, including white water rafting, kayaking, hiking, sledge development, and more! Adaptive Parkland Challenge and Parks Day 

Come and explore Eagle Point-Blue Rapids Provincial Park this summer and get active and outdoors during their Parks Day and Adaptive Parkland Challenge! Located minutes from Drayton Valley, the area offers spectacular views of the North Saskatchewan River and an abundance of recreational opportunities. On July 20th and 21st, get outdoors and try a new activity in the Eagle Point-Blue Rapids Parks System. There will be a free BBQ on July 20th at Willey West Campground. Adaptive Yoga 
Adaptive Yoga for beginners. This gentle yoga class accommodates many different physical limitations through the use of modified poses/structures and yoga equipment. Class is taught by a Yoga Associations of Alberta certified teacher. Offered at the Edmonton Seniors Activity Centre, four weeks long starting July 4 (Thursdays), 1pm - 2:30 pm. Cushions Still Available

Thanks to the generosity of MEDIchair (Edmonton location), CPA (Alberta) received a donation of nearly 100 cushions!  Special thanks as well to FI Canada for their assistance with storage of these cushions.

 

All cushions are new or previously trialed and there are a variety of brands and sizes available.CPA (Alberta) neither endorses nor guarantees any of these products and recommends that, in order to prevent any complications that may result from the use of any of these cushions, you contact your medial service provider or seating specialist. Steve Saoberg from MEDIchair, Edmonton location (780-437-3300) may be able to provide assistance with any technical questions.

 

CPA (Alberta) members can 'purchase' one cushion at a cost of $75/cushion to cover shipping and handling. Brand-new, these cushions range in price from $250-$600. For more information on how to obtain a cushion, contact your local CPA (Alberta) Client Services Coordinator. 

 

Get in Motion

Get in Motion is a nation-wide physical activity counseling service for Canadians with spinal cord injuries. This FREE service is designed to provide participants with the information and support they may need to meet personal physical activity goals, or just a little motivation to get started with a physically active lifestyle.
