As the Christmas season approaches, I want to take a moment and wish all our producers, sponsors, board members and advisors, and each of you I have the opportunity to work with a very Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year! Although times are challenging, we look forward and anticipate exciting times ahead for our Indiana dairy industry!
We are pleased to have put together another really good program for the Regional Meetings in January and February. Be sure to look at the brochure, pick out the meeting that fits best, save the date, and get registered. Please note that we have changed a few of the locations to make it convenient for more producers or to allow us more room; don't miss out on this opportunity. I am confident you will not leave disappointed! It is very exciting when one of our sponsors makes the decision to move to a higher level of sponsorship. We are pleased to welcome Arm & Hammer Animal Nutrition as new Gold sponsors! We want to thank each of our tremendous sponsors for their continued support and allowing us to pursue our vision "To make Indiana the most desirable state in which to produce milk." Please take note of each one, thank them and give them a chance to do business on your farm if applicable. Invoices for all regular, associate, and corporate level members have been mailed; if you do not see yours in a couple of days please let me know, possibly a changed address or other problem. Each of you is very important to us as we work for all but also wanting all to be a part of us. I thank you in advance for getting these taken care of, saving us much time and effort when having to resend. March 30-31 is the date of the 2016 IDP Farm and Industry Tour - this year traveling into central Illinois. We will be seeing a very diverse group of farms. Dr. Mike Hutjens is planning to speak at our evening banquet. While planning is in progress, I want you to get the date saved so you are not disappointed! As always, if you have any dairy need, questions, or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me at dougleman@indianadairy.org or call me at 317-695-8228. Enjoy the season, be careful and may God bless each of you!

The Many Faces of Mycoplasma
Dairy Herd Management, Maureen Hanson
Mycoplasma is a particularly challenging organism because of two major characteristics: it is highly contagious and, in the case of mastitis, it is untreatable.
Sheila Andrew, Professor and Extension Dairy Specialist at the University of Connecticut, said the bacteria manifests itself in various diseases in the herd. "Mastitis is the most acute form, most often affecting fresh cows immunocompromised by the stress of calving, and may be subclinical, clinical or chronic," she said. In addition to the mammary system, mycoplasma resides as a part of the normal bacterial flora in the respiratory and urogenital tracts of dairy animals. Calves can contract pneumonia and stubborn ear infections by drinking milk from infected cows, via airborne transmission or from contaminated feeding equipment.
Joint infections and arthritis can occur in cattle of all ages. Mycoplasma often enters herds when new cows or replacement heifers are brought in from outside sources. But Colorado veterinarian Greg Goodell, who practices in six western states, also sees a few cases every year in closed herds. "It almost always surfaces as mastitis in a fresh heifer," he said. "We've learned that strictly growing from within does not completely protect a herd from mycoplasma." Goodell also is seeing a trend of mycoplasma respiratory and ear infections in calves occurring hand-in-hand with increasingly growing pinkeye outbreaks.
Because mycoplasma is highly contagious and can be detrimental to dairy animals of all ages, preventative measures should be in place to limit its spread. University of Connecticut Professor and Extension Dairy Specialist Sheila Andrew recommends:
1) Practice hygienic milk procedures recommended for all mastitis prevention, including teat-dipping.
2) Pasteurize waste milk fed to calves, and keep safeguards in place to ensure the pasteurizer consistently meets adequate time and temperature goals.
3) In herds with a known history of mycoplasma mastitis, use a high quality colostrum replacer instead of fresh colostrum.
4) Establish an effective monitoring program in collaboration with the herd veterinarian.
5) Screen all cattle for mycoplasma prior to introduction into the herd.

Bicentennial Project Seeks Historic Photos from NW Indiana
As the Northern Indiana Dairy Trail prepares to host thousands of visitors for special bicentennial celebrations next June and October, the organizing committee wants to shine a spotlight on the history of dairy farming in northern Indiana. The committee is seeking decades-old photographs and videos for its website that show dairy producers, dairy families and local creameries working to produce milk the old-fashioned way. Photos from Elkhart, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Marshall, Noble and St. Joseph counties will be considered. The pictures and caption information (brief description of what is shown, when and where photo was taken) should be emailed to jerry@farmers-exchange.net by Dec. 31.
