It has been an absolutely beautiful fall, hope all are making good progress on fieldwork and manure application. It was good to see several of our producers and many of our sponsors at World Dairy Expo. With fall comes lots of planning for our upcoming events. First up is going to be our Partners in Success luncheon. Sometimes we do not get the invitation sent to the right person in the organization or the invitation can be blocked by your server. If you feel that you might have been missed, please contact me. It is our opportunity to show our appreciation to our sponsors and update on what we are doing. We would hate to leave someone out by accident.
It is very exciting as we are able to introduce a new DIAMOND sponsor to IDP, Old National and Secura Insurance. We wanted to get them linked on the newsletter even though we have not had time to get the "official" welcome lined up. That will be coming soon. The Old National/Secura contact is Chris Moore at 317-650-4519. We have such a tremendous line-up of sponsors; please support them as they support IDP in our mission to serve you.
We are also highlighting a REAP Grant opportunity that might be of value to some of you, please check it out. The next risk management webinar is Nov. 4 at 12 noon Eastern time. Please see the info below and get it on your calendar. These opportunities are for you as producers and anyone else interested in marketing, but you need to participate to take advantage.
Enjoy the weather, be careful and let me know if you have any dairy needs. Contact me at dougleman@indianadairy.org or at 317-695-8228. Take care and God bless!

We've had a few glitches with our invitations, so if you are interested in coming but haven't received an invitation, please click here for details.
We are pleased to announce our keynote speaker, Dr. Jason Henderson, Associate Dean and Director of Purdue Extension. Dr. Henderson was raised on a dairy farm in Iowa. USDA Rural Energy for America Program Grant
Christi Southerland, Prosperity Ag & Energy Resources
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) offers the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) Grants for the purchase, installation and construction of a renewable energy system or energy efficiency upgrades. REAP creates opportunities for economic development for rural small businesses, farmers and ranchers by supporting renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. REAP grants provide 25% of the total system costs, with a maximum grant of $500,000 for renewable energy systems and $250,000 for energy efficiency systems.
GRANT ELIGIBILITY
- Grant must go towards the purchase of a renewable energy system or energy efficiency upgrades
- Chosen technology must be commercially available
- Project must have technical merit
- Project must be located in a designated rural area
- Applicant must be the owner of the project
- Sites must be controlled by the applicant
The USDA provides each region a set amount of grant money to distribute to the applicants within their region. The funding is awarded based upon each grant's score. Grants that are requesting $20,000 or less receive preference and are awarded first. Grants requesting higher amounts are scored competitively against each other and the higher the score, the more likely the grant will be awarded. Grant funds are awarded as a direct reimbursement once the energy project has been completed and been placed in use. Click here for additional information.

Veterinary Feed Directive Fast Facts
Preparing for a Successful Transition to VFD's
Ted Holthaus, Zoetis Animal Health
GET READY TO IMPLEMENT BY DECEMBER 2016. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published the revised Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD). Starting December 2016, the use of all medically important antibiotics (those important in human and animal health) in feed will require a VFD, and use of medically important antibiotics in water will require a veterinary prescription. Zoetis is working with the FDA, veterinary associations and the feed industry to help streamline the transition process. Stay up to date with regular updates at ResponsibleAntibioticUse.com/VFD. * Starting in December 2016, a VFD must be obtained from a licensed veterinarian before using any feeds containing antibiotics that are medically important to human health. * Only a veterinarian will be able to issue a VFD to allow producers to purchase and use the products. THE VETERINARIAN WILL KNOW WHETHER A VFD WILL BE REQUIRED OR NOT. 1. If the state has established a veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR) regulation, a veterinarian and producer must establish or already have a VCPR. 2. The veterinarian may issue a signed VFD containing information specified by regulation. PRODUCERS WILL NEED TO WORK WITH THEIR VETERINARIAN TO ESTABLISH A VFD RENEWAL PROCEDURE. Know when the VFDs will need to be renewed. A VFD may only be valid for up to six months. KEEP RECORDS OF YOUR VFDs FOR TWO YEARS. All VFDs must be filed or electronically stored for two years according to FDA regulations. A VFD record can either be a paper copy or electronic form. Veterinarians, feed suppliers, and producers must keep a copy of each VFD for two years.

Margin Protection Program Deadline is November 20

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that the deadline to enroll for the dairy Margin Protection Program for coverage in 2016 has been extended until Nov. 20, 2015.
The voluntary program, established by the 2014 Farm Bill, provides financial assistance to participating farmers when the margin - the difference between the price of milk and feed costs - falls below the coverage level selected by the farmer. "The fall harvest is a busy time of the year for agriculture, so this extension will ensure that dairy producers have more time to make their choices," said Vilsack. "We encourage all operations to examine the protections offered by this program, because despite the very best forecasts, markets can change." Vilsack encouraged producers to use the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Agency Service (FSA) online Web resource here to calculate the best levels of coverage for their dairy operation. The secure website can be accessed via computer, smartphone or tablet. He also reminds producers that were enrolled in 2015 that they need to make a coverage election for 2016 and pay the $100 administration fee. Although any unpaid premium balances for 2015 must be paid in full by the enrollment deadline to remain eligible for higher coverage levels in 2016, premiums for 2016 are not due until Sept. 1, 2016. Also, producers can work with milk marketing companies to remit premiums on their behalf.
