Greetings!

As I visit with producers and folks around the state it seems that we have about every weather scenario currently going on.  We in the northwest just happen to be really wet - lots of lakefront properties right now!

I see that County fairs are starting and we also have a few things going on here at IDP that I would like for you to try to participate in.  Please join us next Wednesday, June 24th for our third IDP/Stewart-Peterson market webinar.  See the details below and join us if at all possible - you should be able to pick up some info that should be beneficial.

Coming up on July 28th and 29th you will have the opportunity to join us for the Kentuckiana where we will be visiting four top herds in southern Indiana - something for everyone.  You can catch the bus and join us for another good trip, meeting folks from Kentucky and Indiana.  You need to get your room and bus reservations made, so don't procrastinate. Give me a call if you have any questions.

Soon after that, the Indiana State Fair begins and IDP has the opportunity and responsibility to work the dairy bar during the three Friday evenings of the fair.  It is always very busy but we have a very enjoyable time working together!  I need 20 bodies each night so please let me know if you can make one of the evenings work.

I usually have more opportunities to get out to farms during the summer months so don't be surprised if I happen to pop in; I really enjoy meeting you and seeing what you have going on.  Again, check out those folks that make this organization possible, our sponsors and work with them if you can, let them know you appreciate their support.  Never hesitate if you have any dairy issue,  give me a call at 317-695-8228 or email me at dougleman@indianadairy.org.  I will do my best to assist you with your need.  Don't forget the webinar Wednesday!  Take care and God bless!

IDP and Stewart-Peterson Present Third Webinar: What Every Dairy Producer Should Know, June 24th at Noon Eastern Time
Stewart-Peterson

IDP and Stewart-Peterson are excited to announce the third Dairy Producer Commodity Price Management Webinar scheduled for Wednesday, June 24 at 12 Noon Eastern time, 11 Central Time.  This hour-long webinar is the third in a series. It's a great, interactive opportunity to gain insight on the macro-economic factors driving the milk and feed markets, and learn the mechanics of a strategically driven approach to managing your pricing decisions.

Our goal is to empower IDP producers to actively and proactively manage the pricing of their production and inputs to minimize the risks and maximize the opportunities. Doing so increases the odds that their business will survive and thrive through price volatility ahead.  We welcome all non-producer IDP members to participate and gain understanding and insight to help support the producers with whom they do business.

Agenda:

  • Welcome/Introduction
  • Feed/Milk Update and Price Scenarios
  • Price Management Perspective
    • Are You Resilient? What if you approached managing your farm the way you approach marketing?
  •  Marketing Education
    • Understanding your WAP (Weighted Average Price) -- It's all about math. Dairy and feed hedging examples
  • Q & A / Closing Comments

Webinars will be recorded and archived. IDP members will have access to view them on an ongoing basis.

Don't leave your revenue stream with a great deal of exposure and a gaping hole that can stifle a thriving offense and wear down your team. Call a time-out and analyze your defense. Taking time out for this webinar will help you determine if you have the correct approach to help your team consistently achieve victory.

Purdue's Farm Management Tour June 23-24 features Sommer Dairy and Beer Farms
Lance Sommer, 2014 Outstanding Young Dairy Producer
The Department of Agricultural Economics at Purdue University has organized an annual Indiana Farm Management Tour every year since the early 1930s. The tour visits farms that have demonstrated highly successful farm business management practices or have unique perspectives on farm business management.

The tour is June 23-24 in Adams and Jay Counties. On the 2nd day of the tour, Sommer's Dairy Farm is featured, and it will include a tour of their robotic milking system, automatic calf feeders, and machinery sharing between the Sommers and Beer Farms, beginning at 8 AM Eastern Time on Wednesday, June 24.  Click here for complete details. Also, a map of the tour is available here.

This is a free event, but if you wish to stay for lunch on Wednesday, you must pre-register by June 18.
Dairy Crisis Training and You
IDP is partnering with American Dairy Association Indiana to assist dairy producers in preparing for an on-farm crisis. IDP and ADAI have prepared some crisis management tools, which were rolled out at the IDP annual meeting in March. Denise Derrer (right) also spoke about crisis management implementation at BOAH.

This free crisis planning session will leave you feeling more prepared to handle situations like: an undercover video, a barn  fire, a food safety concern, a natural disaster, a farm injury or fatality, worker issues, foreign animal disease, and more.

We would like YOU to consider holding a crisis training at your farm. It could be just for your farm's use, or you could invite other dairy farmers around you. Please contact Doug Leman, and he will be glad to give some ideas on how to get started. IDP and ADAI have resources and materials to make this a meaningful event. Some farms have already scheduled trainings, but we'd love to have more! Please give it some serious consideration, and call Doug at 317-695-8228.
We're Looking for a few good men and women!
IDP will be serving up ice cream and grilled cheese sandwiches at the dairy bar for 3 Friday evenings during the Indiana State Fair. Remember this is the year of the Farmer! Why not make plans to see the fair and then check in at the dairy bar around 6:40 PM, working from 7-11 PM. It's loads of fun, and we'd sure appreciate the help! Give Doug Leman a call at 317-695-8228, and see which dates work for you: August 7, 14 and 21. Who knows, maybe a celebrity like the Lieutenant Governor will join us again like she did last year!
