Greetings!
If you, like me, have placed the final dot and exclamation mark on 2014, we can look back with great fondness of a fun and exciting year for dairy farm families. Looking ahead to 2015, we see lights coming but are not quite sure what it is! Nonetheless, I am optimistic about this upcoming year and am hoping you are greeting the New Year with optimism as well.
As I reported to you last year, your Board undertook a major effort in developing a formal strategic plan for IDP. This plan, which is just days from final Board approval, will be our road map for what this organization will do for the next 3 years. This Plan will be the basis for programming for the organization and includes some bold initiatives. We will be unveiling this content at upcoming events. In fact, the Regional meetings will feature topics which were developed through this plan. Please come to the meeting nearest you...you are sure to receive good, timely information that will be useful on your farm.
In conclusion, this organization exists for the sole purpose of being your voice and advocate. Never hesitate to call Doug at 317-695-8228, or a Board member if you're in need of some assistance. So...best wishes to you and your family in this New Year!
Steve Obert, IDP President Obert@IndianaDairy.org

New Animal ID Requirements Started Jan. 1
Effective Jan. 1, 2015, Indiana's animal identification rules changed to comply with USDA's Animal Disease Traceability (ADT) program. You can read the specifics of the rule for dairy here.
In addition to the new rule, public auctions and markets around the state may require specific types of ID for cattle sold by them in order to accommodate their management systems. For example, Rochester sale barn requires RFID scanable tags with HDX technology. This does NOT apply to dairy butcher cows, but it Does apply to bull calves, springers and milking cows for dairy. Animals without their specific approved tagging system will be tagged at the auction, and the seller will be assessed a tagging fee and a scanning fee. All dairy cattle and sexually intact beef cattle 18 months and older need official ID whenever there is a change of ownership. Records on these transactions must be retained for 5 years by the sellers and buyers. All of these changes will take some time to work through. Please contact your local auction to learn their specific requirements, and you can also contact the Indiana State Board of Animal Health with questions at 317-544-2400.
