Greetings!
We had a great kick-off for our Regional Dairy Meetings this week when we met at Turkey Run State Park for the first meeting. We had excellent attendance and we are anticipating that to continue as we look forward to getting into full swing with the rest of our meetings in the next two weeks. Please try to join us, it will be worth your time, and I know each of you can use a break!
There are multiple opportunities to be involved in events this spring and summer. Next in line is our day with fellow dairy producers and industry folks from PA at Fair Oaks on March 25 (more information below). Our Summer Tour is scheduled for June 4-5 into Ohio followed by the Kentuckiana Dairy Exchange on July 29-30 in Kentucky this year.I'm mentioning these dates to help you plan your summer and so you can take part in some great opportunities to learn new ideas and build new friendships!
We are aware of the propane crisis that is ongoing and I have been in contact with the industry organizations and Indiana State Department of Agriculture. If you are dealing with this in a personal way, I would be happy to discuss this with you.
As I write this, it is looking like the farm bill is finally going to happen, never pleasing everyone but at least we have something to move forward on.We are also aware that the Republican side of the house is working on putting together an immigration plan.It will be in several pieces but it sure would be a positive if something could actually help our broken immigration system.I would be more than happy to discuss this with anyone that is interested.
Just as a gentle reminder, we have received most of your 2014 dues renewals but if you haven't sent yours yet, we would sure be glad if you could do it so we don't have to send out a second invoice. We appreciate each and every one of our members. Don't forget to put the annual meeting on your calendar: March 13, 2:00 EST at the Indiana Livestock Forage and Grain Forum. Call me with any dairy need or discussion at 317-695-8228 or dougleman@indianadairy.org. I will be looking forward to seeing you at one of the meetings.Take care and God bless.

Executive Director

Farm Bill Faces Likely Passage in Senate on Monday
The Agriculture Act of 2014 was passed by the House on Jan. 29 and may come up for a vote in the Senate on Monday evening where it is expected to pass and also eventually be signed by the President. Some key parts of this Farm Bill are:
- It eliminates direct payments
- It cuts 8.5 Billion in SNAP (Food Stamp over 10 years
- Margin Protection insurance for Dairy:
- There are two tiers of pricing for annual premiums. The first 4 million lbs. of milk sold annually will have significantly lower premiums than milk production above 4 million lbs. The $4/cwt margin coverage level is available at no cost except for $100 signup fee, but the premiums become increasingly expensive as margins increase.
- Additionally, premiums below the $8 level will be discounted by 25% for the first two years of the program (2014 & 2015) for the first 4M lbs. of production history.
- If a participating dairy operation is operated by more than one producer, all will be treated as a single dairy operation. If a dairy producer operates two or more dairy operations, each must register separately to participate.
- Market Stabilization Plan (Supply Management) was NOT included in this legislation
- A dairy production donation program will be instated for times of low margin where the USDA will purchase dairy products at market prices to give nutrition assistance to low income households.

USDA: pullback on cheese usage
USDA reports that there has been some utilization reduction from manufacturers and food service outlets in cheese usage, due to the record high prices of blocks and barrels. One manufacturer commented that a number of food service outlets are experimenting with reducing or removing cheese from some menu options, to reduce their need to purchase cheese. Grocery stores are resisting buying more than needed to keep shelves stocked, in the view of almost all manufacturers. This buyer resistance is obviously attributed to current prices. Read the comments here.
