Greetings!
County fair time is here again! Let me know when your dairy show is and I will try to get to some if I can fit them into my schedule. It's always good to see young people working with their animals and with each other.
I have had the opportunity to work closely with BOAH and the dairy farm inspection team. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can assist you. Often it is just a misunderstanding , or sometimes a clarification might be needed. We appreciate the working relationship we have with BOAH, but I can't help you if I don't hear from you.
There are lots of opportunities coming up! You need to get your reservations in for the Kentuckiana Dairy Exchange to be held July 30-31. We will be providing transportation from the motel both days for the farm tours. We continue to get more producers participating in our events. Ccome and see what we are all about. I am confident you will meet a new friend and take an idea back home that can help you improve your operation.
If you would like to help serve in the dairy bar or rib-eye stand at the state fair, let me know. We still have some slots to fill. We will be serving in the dairy bar on three Fridays, Aug. 2nd, 9th, and 16th from 7-11 p.m. We will also be doing two shifts in the rib-eye stand on Aug. 17th, 1-5:30 p.m. and 5:30-10:30p.m. These are enjoyable opportunities to work together and I've never heard anyone say they were sorry they helped!
We'd like to welcome our newest Bronze sponsor, MarginSmart, a company that wants to get the concept of margin and profitability management out to our members! You can visit their website here and see all of our Bronze level sponsors here.
You can contact me to sign up for any of these events or with any dairy need at dougleman@indianadairy.org or call me at 317-695-8228. Hope to see you soon, take care and God bless!

Top 7 Violations at Recent Farm Sanitation Inspections
We asked Doug Metcalf, BOAH Dairy Division Director, to give us an idea of common sanitation inspection violations. He agreed. Following are the top 7 most common violations on recent inspections. 1. Storage of utensils & equipment (2 points). Items need to be stored off the floor, items like buckets and bottles need to be able to drain. 2. Floors in milk house and parlor (1 point). Aggregate cannot be showing, one-piece mats that are impossible to pull up for cleaning will be marked. 3. Protection from contamination (3 points). Milk contact surfaces must be capped, closed, etc. 4. Milk house openings (2 points). Doors must close, screens must be in place. 5. Water Supply (2 points). No submerged inlets. 6. Construction utensils & equipment (4 points). Good repair of rubber items, inflations, vacuum/milk hoses and agitator caps. 7. Drugs, drug equipment, cleaners, sanitizers (minor violations, 2 points), correct labeling and storage. Doug Metcalf said the rubber agitator cap on the bulk tank is in the "item of the month club." There is no such club in reality, but this item has been marked several times on farms recently. Please check the condition of your agitator cap!

Dairy Policy Update: Farm Bill Collapse
People are still shaking their heads over the failure of Congress to pass the Farm Bill. Although the House voted to remove supply management from the dairy portion of the farm bill when it overwhelmingly passed the Goodlatte/Scott amendment, it didn't really matter in the end when the entire bill failed. Click here to read an article out of Capital Press, "Milk Supply Management Remains Center of Farm Bill Debate." Also, you may want to watch a video of University of Wisconsin's Mark Stephensen and Cornell's Andrew Novakovic as they discuss the situation. Stephensen Novakovic Video

Weighted average price: Know your numbers Scott Stewart, from
In health and fitness circles, people are often encouraged to "know your numbers." Key statistics like height, weight, body mass index, cholesterol and blood pressure numbers are often used as basic measurements - or at least benchmarks for embarking on a fitness program.
Likewise, when a dairy producer is describing his or her farming operation, a few key statistics are often recited: Number of cows, rolling herd average, butterfat percentage, somatic cell count, number of employees and so on. Not only do these numbers describe our businesses, they are a way to measure the quality of our work.
How do you measure the quality of your marketing decisions? So often, the management of price risks and opportunities takes a back seat to production management, and many producers do not have a systematic method for measuring the quality of their marketing decisions.
As dairies continue to become more sophisticated in their management processes, it is important to develop the right perspective on the markets and marketing decisions.
Just as a dairy's rolling herd average is determined by the average of all cows in the herd, the price received for selling that production must be viewed in the big picture.
Producers can logically and unemotionally assess their marketing success by knowing their weighted-average price for their entire production over time.
What is weighted-average price? Weighted-average price is the net average price received over time for all of your milk production (or paid out for feedstuffs).
It is simply calculated by averaging the value of priced milk per hundredweight (cwt), the value of unpriced production assigned the current market value and the value of any milk with hedge positions.
Averaging these values is important because the price you receive for your production at any given point in time might be higher or lower than the current market price.
It should be your goal to make strategic and incremental sales (or feed purchases) that build the best possible weighted-average price for all your production long term.
