Fashion District Discusses Illegal Street Vending
| Illegal street vendors set up in alleyways, sidewalks, and streets in the Fashion District. |
LA Fashion District Executive Director, Kent Smith discussed the potential impact of legalizing street vending on Downtown with media and community stakeholders. He was quoted in the LA Downtown News last week regarding City Council's move to legalize street vending. Click here to read the full story in LA Downtown News. Smith also spoke at the City public hearing on June 18th , where he highlighted that the Fashion District's narrow sidewalks are already congested with up to seven mobile food trucks per block. The BID spends over $1 million annually to pick up trash averaging over 6 tons of trash daily, much of it illegally dumped. Additionally, Smith pointed out a multitude of liability concerns for property owners. He urged the City to consider allowing neighborhoods to decide if they want sidewalk vending.
The BID does not believe the City has the resources to regulate street vendors and legalizing the practice could prove harmful to both the public and business owners.
LA City Council Approves New Measures to Address Homeless Encampments
The Los Angeles City Council has approved a series of new measures that would allow LAPD to seize and in some cases destroy homeless belongings including tents, large furniture, and shopping carts. Council approved the new laws in response to the increase in the homeless population over the last four years. The City has seen an 85% increase in the number of people camping on the street. The LA Fashion District has seen encampments go from 100 per night to 400 per night in the last two years. The new laws will take effect as soon as they are signed and published by the city clerk. Downtown Housing Demand Expected to Remain High
LA Fashion District staff attended Central City Association's (CCA) "High Hopes for High Rise" panel where several developers discussed their Downtown high rise projects. Panelists commented on the difficulty of building new residential projects in the area due to parking and space requirements, and stated that they believe housing demand will remain high. Downtown has one of the lowest ratios of units to job nationally. The LA Fashion District has 1,000 residential units currently being developed.
