BID Safe and Clean Team Clean Up Oil Spill on Maple




50 gallons of hydraulic oil were mopped up in a two block area on Maple Avenue on Saturday, August 2, 2014. BID Field Supervisor Elmer Pacheco and Safe Team Supervisor Manuel Madueno responded to a complaint call and found that hydraulic oil from an elevator was spilling from an upper floor parking lot into the street below. The elevator company was contacted and responded immediately. BID Teams removed 7 bags of oil absorbed sand from sidewalks and gutters while waiting for the elevator company to arrive and finish the job. 

Fire Caused by Electrical Short

On Monday, August 11, 2014, BID Safe Team Members responded to a fire in the upper floors of a commercial building at 1141 S. Santee St. The LA Fire Department (LAFD) says the fire was attributed to an electrical short due to overuse of electricity. LAFD discovered that building floors 2, 3 and 4 had sustained moderate damage.

CVS Grand Opening on 7th and Spring

Downtown's enw CVS/pharmacy is opening on the corner of 7th and Spring, Saturday, August 16th at 8 a.m. Parking for the event will be located across the street on Spring Street.

BIDs Focuses on Operations and Partnerships

Business Improvement district operations teams met for the first time on August 7, 2014 to discuss best practices with the goal of sharing experiences and learning new strategies for delivering services. 

 

LA Fashion District BID Operations Director Randall Tampa arranged special meetings with LAPD officers and officials to discuss working with LAPD. Central Division Capt. Mike Oreb provided an overview of effective partnerships, and SLO Julie Nony detailed important points that can improve communications.  

 

BID Teams were also introduced to the Coordinated Entry System that is an effort to house chronic homeless individuals. The system gives all homeless clients, across all agencies, a numerical rating of needs and services and moving the most needy up to the front of the line to get supportive housing. 

 

New LAFD Fire Chief Introduced

On August 7, 2014 we attended a meeting at Central City Association (CCA) to meet LAFD Fire Chief-select Ralph M. Terrazas who discussed LAFD's reform plan that emphasizes response time improvements, resource management, and reflecting on community needs. The Chief, Los Angeles' first Hispanic head of the Fire Department, was unanimously confirmed on August 8, 2014 by the City Council. Click Here for the LA Times story.
