March 2014 Trash Tonnage

The BID collected 192.23 tons of trash during March 2014. This is a significant increase over January collection records and may represent the overwhelming amount of illegal dumping in alleys and streets that the BID had to remove last month.

Opposition to Sidewalk Vending Proposal
Thanks to the help of CD 14 staff who attended our Board Meeting in March we attended a meeting at City Hall with the Chief Legislative Analyst (CLA) to provide input into their upcoming report on sidewalk vending. The comments we put forward are included here.

We expect the report to be completed by the end of the month & the item to be heard by the Economic Development Committee in early May. We will circulate the CLA's report when it is made public. We are working with the Downtown Neighborhood Council & the LA BID Consortium to show City Council the extent of opposition to the proposal to legalize sidewalk vending.

Neighborhood Council Election Results

Congratulations to the new and returning Board Members who won seats in the Downtown LA Neighborhood Council election that took place on April 3, 2014. Many thanks to everyone who turned out to vote. BID Managing Director Lynn Myers was re-elected for another term as Fashion District Business Representative. See the election results here.
Bringing Back Broadway Construction Update

Street work on Broadway between 3rd Street and Olympic Boulevard shifts to the east side, and associated cross-streets, between 4/11-4/16; and to the west side between 4/17-4/19. One lane will be maintained in each direction for both these phases, and bus zones affected will shift to the far side of the intersection as necessary.

Shot-blasting and cleaning will occur at night so as to minimize pedestrian hazards, but concrete slurry work must occur during the day due to noisy machinery. The finished result will be a new, smoother, black concrete layer for the installation of Broadway's new high-visibility Continental Crosswalks.

COMING UP: Street work will be concluded by June. Installation of parking meters, planters, tables, chairs, and umbrellas will complete the improvement project by mid-August.

Tiara Cafe Closes Its Doors
