L.A. Textile Show Opens March 10th  

Wholesale buyers will be choosing the colors and patterns of fabrics for the clothing you'll be wearing in 2015 at the Spring/Summer 2015 Los Angeles International Textile Show (LA TEXTILE). The tradeshow will take place from Monday-Wednesday, March 10-12, 2014 at the California Market Center (CMC). Sidewalk Vending Concerns  Voiced

On Thursday, February 27th BID staff and district stakeholders met with LAPD Captain Prokop to talk about public health and safety issues surrounding illegal sidewalk vending on San Pedro Street in LAPD Newton Division.

riday, February 28th several representatives from Los Angeles BIDs met with the City Legislative Analyst's office to voice concerns about a proposed sidewalk vending pilot project.

Complete Streets Day

The City of Los Angeles officially designated Wednesday, March 5, 2014, Complete Streets Day in the City of Los Angeles. The resolution, presented by Councilmember José Huizar, was heard and voted on by the Los Angeles City Council and aims to bring focus and awareness to the ground-breaking policy approach, which advocates for increased pedestrian, bicycle and multi-modal transportation use.

 

LA Fashion District BID staff attended the ceremony to help recognize the Councilmember's work in bringing more pedestrian friendly streets to his district.

Jamie Johnson Photography Exhibit Reception at the Cooper Building, March 13  

Select photographs from Jamie Johnson's new series Vices, or I Will Not... will be on display at the Cooper Design Space. The photographs offer an updated twist on the old-timey school-day punishment of writing on the chalkboard, but refer to the crimes of a new generation. An artist reception and book signing will be held at the Cooper on March 13, 4-7 p.m. Event details here.

Great Streets in Downtown  

In a letter to the Mayor this week, Councilmember Huizar advocated for the numerous streets in the district that he has nominated for the "Great Streets" initiative. Among the streets nominated by Councilmember Huizar are: Broadway, Figueroa, Grand, Los Angeles, Main, Spring, and 7th Street in Downtown Los Angeles.

 

LA Fashion District Boasts Two of the Top 30 Concert Venues in Los Angeles 

The Orpheum Theatre (Number 24) and the Theatre at Ace Hotel (Number 29) were both listed by the LA Business Journal in this week's "The List." Nine of the 35 venues listed are in Downtown Los Angeles. The venues were ranked by seating capacity.

California Hospital Offering Free Health Seminars for Businesses
California Hospital has embarked on an exciting new initiative to educate the employees of downtown's thriving businesses. The free seminars are on a variety of different topics - workplace compliance, health and wellness and/or emergency preparedness -  and the hospital staff can come to your location either in the morning prior to the start of the workday, during lunch or right after work. Heart of the City 5k
On Sunday, April 13, 2014, the 2nd Annual Heart of the City 5k will draw hundreds of walkers, runners, and volunteers to the heart of Los Angeles to support the California Hospital Medical Center (CHMC). Registration fees are: $35 for adults; $25 for children 12 & under; a t-shirt is included with each registration. Fundraising incentives and prizes will be available.

Companies and organizations can participate by becoming sponsors or participating in the Corporate Cup challenge. Corporate Cup teams compete against each other for a special trophy, and participants can also purchase a discounted Course Sponsorship. Please click here for more information.
