Stakeholders Weigh In at Community Planning Meeting
On February 3, 2014 over 75 stakeholders engaged in conversations on relevant planning topics related to the future of Downtown with staff from the City of Los Angeles Planning Department on topics including Urban Design, Mobility, Sustainability, Land Use, Zoning, Station Area Design, Economic Development, Livability, etc.

BID Board Members, City officials, residents, and downtown community members discussed a myriad of topics that are important to updating the Downtown Community Plan. It's not too late to contribute your comments.  Send emails to Bryan Eck at bryan.eck@lacity.org

Many thanks to Steve Hirsh and his staff for hosting the meeting at the Cooper Design Space.

Downtown Publicity

Last week's email newsletter from Councilman Huizar's office highlighted that although based in New York City, fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar decided to travel cross-country in order to use Broadway as the location for their latest photo shoot. The clothing, created by some of the top fashion designers in the industry, reflected the retro styling and historic look of Broadway. Councilman Huizar's Broadway Initiative has opened the door to new economic development. Fashion companies and businesses continue to flock to Broadway, bringing with them great jobs and economic benefit to Downtown Los Angeles. The February 2014 edition is on newsstands now.

Also new this week...

Downtown Hospitality Forum

We attended LAPD's Downtown Hospitality Forum to discuss the growing number of entertainment venues in downtown Los Angeles.
Many bar operators, including Eduardo Castillo from Pattern Bar, were there.

Captain Oreb complimented the quality of entertainment venues in downtown and said one of the reasons Central Division crime is down is thanks to responsible operators.

We also met LAPD officers and detectives from Vice Division's Special Enforcement Section.  We discussed ways BIDs could help Vice Division address concerns about irresponsible liquor sales at several stores in the District.

50M Visitors by year 2020

We attended CCA's Economic Development Committee where Los Angeles Convention Center Executive Director Bud Ovrom presented his plans for privatization and management of the Convention Center facility. The plans are designed to increase Los Angeles' competitive advantage in the convention market.

With the new LA Convention Center Commission and the AEG privatization contract, the Center can more easily adapt to market needs. Additionally, through either the Farmers Field deal or a refinance of existing Center facilities, the Center will be able to expand to 1.1M square feet and can be competitive with other cities.

Tourism counts for 2013 showed that Los Angeles had approximately 42.2M visitors, and Ovrom expects that Los Angeles can reach a new goal of 50M annual visitors by the year 2020.
