15 Days until Christmas in July

Christmas in July 2013 Bring your energy, smiles, and spiritual gifts to Christmas in July (7/24 at 6pm) for one night of food, air conditioning, and fun for our homeless neighbors in need!   We will serve fried chicken with sides, and watermelon for dessert.

Look for the sign-up sheet (to help serve) and collection box (for donated items) in Chisholm Hall.  Here are the specifics of what we need to provide each of our guests at their night of free "shopping" at St. John's Boutique: men's white crew socks, men's boxers (medium, large, & extra large), women's white socks and panties, women's cami tops, gently used summer clothes and sneakers, lightweight hoodies, and rolling suitcases.  We also will accept donations to purchase bus passes for each of our guests.  Please, please only buy or bring things items that are on this list!

Come bless and be blessed!  We will need those who are willing to serve and clean up.  Want to know more?  Contact Nancy Johnson at 757-646-2647.

18 Days until VBS Kidz Kamp

St. John's is joining with First Presbyterian, Trinity, and St. Christopher parishes for a city-wide VBS Kidz Kamp to be held at St. John's on  Monday, 7/27 - Thursday, 7/30 from 6- 8:30pm.  Supper will be provided each night.  Activities for children will revolve around a water theme and adults will have nightly sessions on the creeds of Christianity.

We look forward to an amazing week together!  Would you like to help with the planning of this exciting inter-parish event?  We need lots of volunteers, both teens and adults.  Contact Margaret Perkins to get involved!

Please assist us in our planning efforts--use this online form to register your child(ren) today!

St. John's Parish celebrated Elaine Baker's 90th birthday
at a special luncheon given in her honor.
The parish gives parties for those
who reach the wise ages of 90, 95, and 100.

Site work to begin for Organ Installation

Site work by ET Gresham will begin in the next couple of weeks in preparation for the installation of St. John's new Viscount organ console and enhancements to our existing Austin pipe organ (see this link for details).  Installation of the instrument will be completed by the end of August with a nationally advertised inaugural concert to be given in early October and the final dedication and final blessing to occur on the Feast of St. John (Sunday, 12/27).

Any time a project of this scale occurs in an historic building, preparation of the site often results in unexpected costs.  Such is the case with this project.  Won't you consider joining with those faithful parishioners who have already pledged or contributed over $135,000, along with our vestry and endowment committee who have pledged an additional $15,000+, to help bring this amazing project to completion?

Please contact Fr. Derek or Senior Warden Margaret Perkins to make a cash gift or pledge to help with the extra costs incurred to install this incredible instrument in our historic worship space.

News from the Episcopal Church's General Convention

The 78th General Convention, in a series of historic moments, elected a new Presiding Bishop, approved marriage equality liturgies for trial use, admitted that "alcohol affects us all" and outlined new policies for alcohol use at church events, authorized the revision process for a new prayer book and hymnal, created a church-wide network for planting new congregations, and made some significant changes to the church's governance.  For an overall summary of these and many other actions of General  Convention #78, use this link.

Miscellany

Christian Formation continues on its summer schedule this week.  Summer Forum will meet in Chisholm Hall for those 13 through adult.  The Good Shepherd & True Vine Atria will be open for those children (potty-trained, ages 3-12 years) who would like to continue their work.  The Creation Atrium will be open from 10-11:30am all summer for children not yet potty trained.

Your funeral plan is not on file.  Two parishioners of St. John's now have a funeral plan on file in the parish office.  Summer is a great time to spend some time reflecting on the music and scripture readings you would like used at your funeral.  Print this form, fill it out, and bring it to the parish office where we can make a copy for you and keep the original on file.

Wednesday Eucharist will continue through the summer months.  This worship was especially created for those who were traveling over the summertime weekends so that all could still receive Christ's body and blood as strength for the journey.  This 30-minute Eucharist begins at 6:30pm and includes hymns, a brief homily, and healing prayers.

Miss on Sunday?  Come on Wednesday.

Have someone to honor, remember, or celebrate?  Flowers offered to the Glory of God
and for your special intention are needed on almost all Sunday mornings of the summer.  The sign-up sheet hangs on the bulletin board in Chisholm Hall closest to the London St. Parking Lot entrance.  The cost is $75 per Sunday (and can always be shared with someone else) and is due in the Parish Office two weeks before your requested Sunday.

St. John's eNews publishes twice a month in the summer.  Remaining summer issues will publish on 7/23, 8/6, & 8/20.  Content deadline is the Tuesday before publication.  Weekly issues will resume on September 3.

Want a St. John's name badge?  Are you ready to look outward and be welcoming, greeting those you do not know before you greet your friends and offering hospitality to those you meet?  If your answer is "yes," then complete a name badge request form found in the worship space and Chisholm Hall.  These badges have a magnetic back. (which should be kept away from medical devices and credit/debit cards).

The Parishioner Corner of our Website has news you can use.  Here you can access the July 2015 Parish Directory, parish handbook, worship ministry schedules, and read approved minutes of vestry discussions and actions as well parish financial reports.  Need or don't remember the password?  Contact the parish office.
