Italian firm makes significant investment in St. John's

We commit ourselves to Indigenous Worship in multiple styles and formats, engaging worshipers to experience the timelessness of Jesus' gifts of Baptism and Eucharist by drawing from both the breadth of music, language, architecture, technology, and art forms found in both the 21st Century and the rich liturgical heritage of the early unified Christian Church. (from St. John's Mission & Principles)

Viscount Organ Company of Mondaino, Italy, through Whitesel Church Organs of Harrisonburg, Virginia, is partnering with St. John's, Portsmouth to not only complete the unfinished restoration of our historic Austin pipe organ (pipe repair & new console with safer wiring from it to the pipe chamber), but has committed to invest over $80,000 in our instrument to increase its capabilities five-fold!  Pictured here are Senior Warden Margaret Perkins and Whitesel CEO Joshua Dove, signing this agreement last Friday morning.

Viscount has been searching for an historic parish on the east coast of the United States in which they could demonstrate their organ's technological capabilities to the North American audience as they have successfully done throughout Europe and the United Kingdom.  St. John's upgraded Austin pipe organ will become Viscount's showcase instrument in North America, and our parish will be prominently featured in Whitesel and Viscount's national advertising.

The potential opportunities for our worship and new possibilities to "move into the neighborhood" are astounding.  Quoting Joshua Dove, "In my eyes, this new state-of-the-art hybrid organ will bring good fortune to your church and the community at large; and that fortune will come in the form of showing others God's love through music.   This will be an incredible asset to the mission of your church, and I consider this project absolutely and unequivocally the new hallmark and next masterpiece for our company, Viscount International, and all of Hampton Roads."

I am extremely grateful for the leadership of Christopher Rusk, our organist/choirmaster, as well as a handful of St. John's parishioners (representing all three of our Sunday Eucharistic congregations) and parish friends who quickly recognized the importance of this opportunity for our parish's overall mission and have contributed or pledged over $135,000 to make this opportunity a reality.  We give thanks most of all to the Holy Spirit who has been leading and moving powerfully throughout this entire process in amazing ways!

Three ranks of pipes have already been removed for repair.  Over the summer, other preparation work will commence in our building as we work toward installation of this upgraded instrument later this fall.  If you have any questions, feel free to talk to Christopher or any member of the staff and vestry.  We will try not to overwhelm you with our excitement!

VBS Kidz Kamp, 7/27-30

St. John's is joining with First Presbyterian, Trinity, and St. Christopher's parishes for a city-wide VBS Kidz Kamp to be held at St. John's on  Monday, July 27th - Thursday, July 30th from 6- 8:30pm.  Supper will be provided Monday - Wednesday (each parish will host for one night) and a pot luck will be held on Thursday.  Activities for children will revolve around a water theme and adults will have nightly sessions on the creeds of Christianity.

We look forward to an amazing week together!  Would you like to help with the planning of this exciting inter-parish event?  We need lots of volunteers, both teens and adults.  Contact Margaret Perkins to get involved!

Please use this online form to register your child(ren) today!

Miscellany

Christian Formation transitions to a summer schedule this week.  Adult Forum (including those 13 years and over) will meet and the Good Shepherd & True Vine Atria will be open for those children (potty-trained, ages 2/3-12 years) who would like to continue their work.  The Creation Atrium will be open from 10-11:30am all summer for children not yet potty trained.

Your funeral plan is not on file.  Only one parishioner of St. John's has a funeral plan on file in the parish office.  Summer is a great time to spend some time reflecting on the music and scripture readings you would like used at your funeral.  Print this form, fill it out, and bring it to the parish office where we can make a copy for you and keep the original on file.

Wednesday Eucharist will continue through the summer months.  This worship was especially created for those who were traveling over the summertime weekends so that all could still receive Christ's body and blood as strength for the journey.  This 30-minute Eucharist begins at 6:30pm and includes hymns, a brief homily, and healing prayers.

Miss on Sunday?  Come on Wednesday.

Have someone to honor, remember, or celebrate?  Flowers offered to the Glory of God
and for your special intention are needed on almost all Sunday mornings of the summer.  The sign-up sheet hangs on the bulletin board in Chisholm Hall closest to the London St. Parking Lot entrance.  The cost is $75 per Sunday (and can always be shared with someone else) and is due in the Parish Office two weeks before your requested Sunday.

St. John's eNews publishes twice a month in the summer.  Remaining summer issues will publish on 6/25, 7/9, 7/23, 8/6, & 8/20.  Content deadline is the Tuesday before publication.  Weekly issues will resume on September 3.

Want a St. John's name badge?  Are you ready to look outward and be welcoming, greeting those you do not know before you greet your friends and offering hospitality to those you meet?  If your answer is "yes," then complete a name badge request form found in the worship space and Chisholm Hall.  These badges have a magnetic back. (which should be kept away from medical devices and credit/debit cards).

The Parishioner Corner of our Website has news you can use.  Here you can access the June 2015 Parish Directory, parish handbook, worship ministry schedules, and read approved minutes of vestry discussions and actions as well parish financial reports.  Need or don't remember the password?  Contact the parish office.
