 Candidate attack gets termination

Seraphin  City hall 450 marketing strategist Charlie Seraphin apparently threw himself under the bus in an effort to discredit mayoral candidate Nancy Shaver.

Five days after Seraphin's exchange of emails and phone calls last Friday with Shaver supporter John Danahy and the candidate, City Manager John Regan terminated Seraphin's contract.

"The civil service side of municipal government is a-political (unbiased)," Regan said.

Seraphin focused a lengthy email to Shaver on a letter in the Record by Danahy, printed below.
In a rapid 15-hour email exchange, Seraphin ranged to everything from Shaver's professional credentials to her marital status. Shaver's response was swift. Find the complete exchange here. Regan's termination letter is here.

Seraphin was part of a trio designated to manage city hall's 450th commemoration effort in keeping with Mayor Joe Boles' plan to get funding first, then develop projects and programs.              Seraphin was hired as a 450 fundraiser. He was later shifted to a contract as marketing strategist for the 450th, producing the annual Spanish Wine Festival and a chef program for the homeless at St. Francis House. His compensation was $78,000 a year.

Regan said he'll discuss filling the vacancy with city hall's 450 Director Dana Ste. Claire.

Letters to the editor

My vote's for Shaver

Editor (Record): In this election, your vote should be more than influenced by family, friend, neighbor, organization or party. After all, it is non-partisan.

My vote is to support Nancy Shaver. It is not against Joe Boles ... without rancor, animosity or hostility in any way possible.

I've never used his legal services. I believe him to be a trustworthy lawyer. Truthfully, I like Joe. I trust my choice will not change his opinion of me.

Why change horses? I have learned that Nancy can document 25 years of deep managerial and executive experience in business planning and development with seven major corporations, and also having formed her own business.

Municipal politics and administration will be a new experience. Not a problem. It means zilch!

You do not achieve Nancy's level of corporate success without experiencing and succeeding in both interpersonal and competitive business politics ... especially as a woman. Every successful, honest business executive marshals, organizes, directs and manages the personnel assets available.

This is what she has done. What more can you ask for in a mayor? Please, answer this question as truthfully as you can after reviewing her resume on her website, shaverformayor.com.

Nancy's tested and proven professional skills will offer deliberative execution of plans and development as mayor.

Nancy brings a far more broad experience package to the table than does Joe, while not taking a back seat to his charisma.

I gotta go with Nancy Shaver, not knowing her party affiliation.

Letter to Record editor

Got it George. We have too many letters as is to get in print, but I'm putting all the extras on the web Sunday.

Record Opinion Editor Jim Sutton's response to letter to editor

An election about people

Editor: There is progress in St. Augustine, carried on by effective professional management. We are a city manager form of government, not strong mayor form.

So streets and pipes are not really the issues in this campaign.

The main job of the elected is to represent the electorate, to carry the concerns of the people to city management.

Nancy Shaver's greatest business asset is gathering facts and finding solutions, and her greatest people asset is involving our community in that effort.

It's about the people, and Joe Boles has shown little interest in involving the community in its signature event, the 450th anniversary of the nation's oldest city.

No reprise of the Cross and Sword state play, no Days in Spain, no celebration of, by and for the people.

This current mayor's legacy is to tell the world about 200 years of Spanish heritage before the United States through Mumford & Sons, a British folk rock band, and during the economic recovery to reduce the unemployment rate by three - the city hall 450 staff, at a cost of $3 million in salaries and exhibits.

Enough "business as usual." As the Record once editorialized, "the mayor's post is a perk, not a coronation."
