Our 25th Anniversary & Jailhouse Wines

Yes, our quarter century celebration will continue this year! We have plenty of our anniversary wine, XXV, which is a hearty dry red with soft oak and smooth mouth feel. We also keep offering our anniversary glass for each case purchase while supplies last. The Jailhouse Wine to support the Wayne County Historical Society awaits your visit, too. Oliver Curtis Perry White "Insane," Georgia Sampson Rosé "Murdered," and Big Ed Kelly Red "Robbed" all have their distinct flavor to please your palates- fun to think of your favorite food pairing!

Speaking of the Historical Society, I'll be delighted to join their annual Jailbird Antique Festival on Saturday, May 3rd at the Museum of Wayne County History (21 Butternut St., Lyons). The Festival runs from 9am to 3pm; the Jailhouse Wine tasting and sales will start at 11am. Get all 3 "inmates" with a gift box for $55! The lunch will be served from 11am to 2pm ($7 pp) if you'd like. For more information: 315-946-4943 or www.waynehistory.org.

On the same weekend, there will be another LOWT event: Cinco de Vino! It's gaining the popularity for the unique Sangria and Salsa pairing at each stop. The event will be on May 3rd & 4th from 12noon to 5pm, $15 per person.
Starry Starry Night at Thorpe Vineyard: Story Slam, Poetry and Star Gazing!
As I introduced in the last newsletter, there will be 3 evening events this summer. Write down your cherished story or poems: rewrite, revise, refine and bring over to one of the nights to share with us followed by relaxing star gazing. Any questions? Just call/email or talk to Fumie when you come in (or click here to read about it in the last newsletter).

It sure was a rough winter- we actually got 4" of snow over this past weekend. Luckily our grapes seem to have survived this history-making cold weather; many thanks to our big Lake in the backyard. There were quite a few days when Lake Ontario looked white all the way to the horizon; that was a rare sight even to us who live right here. So this time I picked another old poem from my library to long for the spring. It was written in February 1983 during my last spring in Tokyo before heading for Oswego in September. "Daphne" in this poem is an evergreen shrub of Chinese origin, Daphne odora of thymelaeaceae, that is praised for its small fragrant flowers. It's probably too cold here to grow them outdoors, but does anyone know if they are available now in the U.S.??

spring-raingear.jpg Coming Spring

by Fumie Thorpe

Periodic precipitation is

a sure sign of spring.

Each raindrop must be encouraging

the greens to burst in the soil.

The north wind is howling; though,

the sun is shining through the city streets.

The florets of the Daphne have just started to show their white interiors

as if to fill my sight with their scent already.

It makes me feel dizzy somehow when

I think of the best of the spring;

that is promised to arrive here

from as far as where our dreams go

to embrace us all with the flowers and songbirds;

and nothing more than the blessing of that southerly breeze.
