February 2014

Greetings!

Ten years ago I remember our printed Spring Newsletter began with: "Greetings from the Land of the Deep Freeze!" I'm tempted to do so again, but now most of the Nation is in deep freeze as well. So...

LET'S THINK SUMMER!!

Last year I came up with the idea of star gazing. I mulled it over during the off-season, and with the help of my colleagues, on three Saturdays in August and September this year we'll be offering: Starry Starry Night at Thorpe Vineyard: Story Slam, Poetry and Star Gazing (see below).

Starry Starry Night at Thorpe Vineyard: Story Slam, Poetry and Star Gazing!

Here is our plan. We will start the event promptly at sunset when the Sunset Tasting comes to an end in our Wine Tasting Room.

There will be a jar to put your name in to participate in the Story Slam and Poetry. One name will be drawn at a time, and each person will be given 2 minutes to tell us the story. It has to be your OWN story with your own voice and expression. No paper reading will be allowed. In case of poetry, you will recite your poem in front of the audience. The theme of the story/poem must include something about stars- astronomy, astrology, the sun, moon, our planet, etc.- as this is the Starry Starry Night. When all the participants finish the presentation, everyone will cast a vote. The person who receives the most votes will win a free bottle of wine!

Then I will talk about the stars and constellations we will be gazing at shortly after, so you will know what to expect. I plan to hand out a star chart, and introduce some "star" tales from the East that you probably don't have much chance to hear. Feel free to bring your own telescope, binoculars, star chart, etc. If you don't know how to use yours, I may be able to help you get acquainted with your equipment.

After all the talk and learning, we will walk out behind the Tasting Room. I would expect by then, about an hour and half after sunset, it will be dark enough to watch the stars and find the constellations. Make sure you dress appropriately; long pants and bug spray are a good idea. You may also want to wear sneakers or walking shoes, as the lawn will likely be wet from dew.

When there is a flyby of the International Space Station, we'll take a break from what we are doing and walk out to observe it. I would expect that we will be able to catch the tail-end activities of the Perseid meteor shower on August 16th. Let's see how lucky we will be! There will be no charge to participate in any parts of these events, and audience will be welcome! Please note that we won't do any wine tasting once the event starts; however, wine will be available for purchase by the glass/bottle if you wish.

Sounds interesting? Are you a longtime writer, or a rookie?? It doesn't matter- start brushing up your skills and ideas, and come join us! Any questions? Call Fumie Thorpe at 315-594-2502 or email: thorpevineyard@rochester.rr.com.

The Event Dates: Saturdays, August 16th & 30th and September 13th. The Star Gazing part of the events will be weather permitting, but the Story Slam and Poetry will go on regardless the weather.

XXV & Jailhouse Wine

This is now the 26th year of Thorpe Vineyard, but our quarter century celebration continues- the actual beginning of our history was October 31, 1988 so we still have a little while to go. We have a plenty of supply of our XXV, the anniversary wine released last fall, as well as the anniversary glasses.

Our collaboration with the Wayne County Historical Society continues, too. We also have a fair supply of the Jailhouse Wine for you to come and try. We plan to attend their Jailbird Antique Festival on May 3rd where the Jailhouse Wine will be available for tasting and purchase.

"Do you think it can be something more?"

I was startled when my colleague indicated a strong interest in the Starry Starry Night I had started last year.  "Sure!"

That was the beginning of our conversation. "Well, I don't do stories. But I can do poems." So we decided to mix the stories and poems; whichever the participants prefer. Looking within ourselves is often like looking at the universe; both exist to be explored. Below is my "Starry Starry Night" that was originally written in Japanese in December 1993. I was startled again by knowing that it was 20 years ago. No wonder my hair is white (yes, I still have some of it despite my alopecia).

"Vincent" or "Starry Starry Night"

by Fumie Thorpe

Orion and Canis Major dominated the view outside the window.
When I skimmed along the horizon; I thought I saw,
I thought I caught the twinkle of Canopus [1]
on the eastbound toll highway many years ago.

The memory continues to embrace me, but
here I am on this northern land where
Big Dipper clears the Lake effortlessly.
Canopus has no chance to come into my sight.

When the twilight fades into the darkness of the night,
Northern Cross emerges to stand firmly in the western sky.
The vigorous flow of Milky Way surrounds it, then
gently streams through the Autumn constellations in the southern sky.

If I couldn't find any hope in this Starry Starry Night,
perhaps I wouldn't be able to carry on.
Just like the moment when
you lost yourself in that Starry Starry Night. [2]

[1] The alpha star of Carina, Canopus is the second brightest star in the heaven. It was called "the Star of the Old Man" in ancient China, and was believed to grant a long life to those who could glimpse it from the latitude around 35°N, where it rises only a few degrees above the horizon that makes it very difficult to be seen.
