My Buddy was Driving the Rental

Last month's newsletter included an article on renting a car when you are on vacation. We received an great follow up question from one of our long time clients, Fred Saltzberg.
Who is a covered driver when I rent my car?
There are three criteria that must be met to be a covered driver:
1. The driver must be a household member AND be related.
2. The driver must be a listed operator on your auto policy.
3. They must be a listed driver on the rental agreement.
So when you are at the rental counter think about who is potentially NOT covered:
Aunt, Uncle, Cousin, Nephew, Niece, Mother, Father, Sister, Brother, College Roommate, Golf Buddy, Co-worker, Nanny, Boss, Neighbor, Teammate, Coach, Brother-in-law, Sister-in-law. Mother-in-law, Father-in-law.......
How do you get coverage for other driver?
As long as they are listed on the rental agreement as a driver AND they have their own insurance policy that would provide coverage for the rental, then you are ok. If your travel companion has no insurance OR is not listed on your rental agreement as a driver - they should not drive the car.
Whose responsible for the damage to the car and injuries if the driver is not covered?
Who ever has their name on the agreement is ultimately responsible for the damages to the car, the loss of income to the rental company, and any Bodily Injury or Property Damage from the accident.
