From Chapel Hill Police Chief Chris Blue - 8:33 a.m., Monday, July 1, 2013
Given the likelihood of additional precipitation over the next 36-48 hours, we would encourage folks to remain vigilant as they begin moving around the community. We understand that they want to get into their places of business to assess things, but we still have power outages at a number of intersections, as well as the potential for trees to come down due to the heavily saturated ground.
Local emergency services crews have responded to natural gas leaks, trees on power lines, trees down and blocking roadways, automatic fire and burglar alarms, house leaks and basement floods. Major flooding occurred in the Camelot Village and Brookwood Condominium, and University Mall areas as well as the Eastgate shopping center. The lower level of the Town of Chapel Hill's Town Hall also sustained flooding waters measured at approximately 24 inches.
The Town is preparing for the next batch of rain anticipated Monday night with personnel and services to assist with emergency needs. We want to remind everyone to not try to drive in standing water nor walk through water that is knee-deep. Also be very cautious of water drains that may be located below flooding waters. If you need assistance to evacuate from a dangerous area, call 911.
Local media outlets are doing a good job keeping up with closures, power outages, etc., so we would encourage residents to monitor those. The Town of Chapel Hill will continue to share information as it becomes available.
